John 4:23–24 CSB
But an hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and in truth. Yes, the Father wants such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and in truth.”

INTRO—

One of my favorite theological writers, Don Whitney, seminary professor at SBTS in Louisville…tells this story from his childhood:
Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life Chapter Five: Worship … for the Purpose of Godliness (D. G. Kehl)

One of the saddest experiences of my childhood happened on my tenth birthday. Invitations to the celebration were mailed days in advance to eight friends. It was going to be my best birthday ever. They all came to my house right after school. We played football and basketball outside until dark. My dad grilled hot dogs and hamburgers while my mother put the finishing touches on the birthday cake. After we had eaten all the icing and ice cream and most of the cake, it was time for the presents. Honestly, I can’t recall even one of the gifts today, but I do remember the great time I was having with the guys who gave them to me. Since I had no brothers, the best part of the whole event was just being with the other boys.

The climax of this grand celebration was a gift from me to them. Nothing was too good for my friends. Cost was immaterial. I was going to pay their way to the most exciting event in town—the high school basketball game. I can still see us spilling out of my parents’ station wagon with laughter on that cool evening and running up to the gymnasium. Standing at the window, paying for nine 25-cent tickets and surrounded by my friends—it was one of those simple but golden moments in life. The picture in my mind was the perfect ending to a ten-year-old boy’s perfect birthday. Four friends on one side and four friends on the other, I would sit in the middle while we munched popcorn, punched each other, and cheered our high school heroes. As we went inside, I remember feeling happier than Jimmy Stewart in the closing scene of It’s a Wonderful Life.

Then the golden moment was shattered. Once in the gym, all my friends scattered and I never saw them again the rest of the night. There was no thanks for the fun, the food, or the tickets. Not even a “Happy Birthday, but I’m going to sit with someone else.” Without a word of gratitude or goodbye, they all left without looking back. So I spent the rest of my tenth birthday in the bleachers by myself, growing old alone. As I recall, it was a miserable ball game.

I tell that story, not to gain sympathy for a painful childhood memory, but because it reminds me of the way we often treat God in worship. Though we come to an event where He is the Guest of Honor, it is possible to give Him a routine gift, sing a few customary songs to Him, and then totally neglect Him while we focus on others and enjoy the performance of those in front of us. Like my ten-year-old friends, we may leave without any twinge of conscience, without any awareness of our insensitivity, convinced we have fulfilled an obligation well.

As we turn our focus to the spiritual habit of worship, I am relying heavily on the encouragement Dr. Whitney provides regarding this important topic…our lives of worship:
Romans 12.1 Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship.”
AND, this habit, alongside all the other habits we’ve studied thus far (Bible intake [reading, memorizing, study, meditation], prayer, fasting, & evangelism)…furthers our growth in...
Hebrews 12.14 “Pursue peace with everyone, and holiness—without it no one will see the Lord.”
1 Timothy 4.7 “But have nothing to do with pointless and silly myths. Rather, train yourself in godliness.”

WORSHIP: In Spirit & Truth [John 4.19-24]

This is how we do it!
IN SPIRIT
Must have the Holy Spirit — John 14.17 “He is the Spirit of truth. The world is unable to receive him because it doesn’t see him or know him. But you do know him, because he remains with you and will be in you.”
Worship is a heart issue more than a place issue.
Another favorite preacher of mine, John Piper has written: “Where feelings for God are dead, worship is dead.”
He continues:
Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life Worship Is … Done in Spirit and Truth

Worship is a way of gladly reflecting back to God the radiance of His worth. This cannot be done by mere acts of duty. It can be done only when spontaneous affections arise in the heart.

Consider the analogy of a wedding anniversary. Mine is on December 21. Suppose on this day I bring home a dozen long stemmed roses for Noël. When she meets me at the door I hold out the roses, and she says, “O Johnny, they’re beautiful, thank you,” and gives me a big hug. Then suppose I hold up my hand and say matter-of-factly, “Don’t mention it; it’s my duty.”

What happens? Is not the exercise of duty a noble thing? Do not we honor those we dutifully serve? Not much. Not if there’s no heart in it. Dutiful roses are a contradiction in terms. If I am not moved by a spontaneous affection for her as a person, the roses do not honor her. In fact, they belittle her. They are a very thin covering for the fact that she does not have the worth or beauty in my eyes to kindle affection. All I can muster is a calculated expression of marital duty.…

Likewise, the Bible says: Psalm 37.4 “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires.”
IN TRUTH
Must have the Holy Spirit — John 14.17 “He is the Spirit of truth. The world is unable to receive him because it doesn’t see him or know him. But you do know him, because he remains with you and will be in you.”
Because… 1 Corinthians 12.3 “Therefore I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.”
Jesus is THE TRUTH — John 14.6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
All else is idolatry — Romans 1.25 “They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served what has been created instead of the Creator, who is praised forever. Amen.”

CONCL—

A personal word on worship…
Accomplishment (Growth) in our lives as Christians energizes (frees) us for worship. [It’s like putting in the work in the gym; or progress on a project (like rebuilding a flower bed in the back yard).]
Worship fuels enthusiasm for faithfulness [Nehemiah 8.10 “Then he said to them, “Go and eat what is rich, drink what is sweet, and send portions to those who have nothing prepared, since today is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, because the joy of the Lord is your strength.””]
Revelation 4:11 CSB
Our Lord and God, you are worthy to receive glory and honor and power, because you have created all things, and by your will they exist and were created.
