We measure love by three indicators:
The Identity of the Lover
The Object of the Love
The Expression of the Love
1.
The Identity of the Love
The greater the lover the greater the love.
When we talk about the love of God, you’re talking about a love the no one can possibly begin to conceive.
This is the God-Love we read about in 1 Cor 13 chapter
Our love is not limitless to the point where we can love everyone
The greater the Lover the Greater the Love
We all know someone that we consider pretty loving - cannot compare to God
2. The Object of the Love
The Lesser the Object, The Greater the Love
The object of God’s love is one of the realities that should take our breath away.
His love is not a temporary, passing thought
Consider for a moment the utter and complete unworthiness of those who are the recipients of this love.
NOT just covenant baptize believers, but individual who are not part of if
A benevolent King may be gracious to his loyal subjects - but not his hated enemy.
Christ in pain and anguish said: “..Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
At the same time “they” were gambling to see who’d get his clothes.
Not out of admiration, but out of sport.
Think for a moment the level of love Christ showed by washing the feet of the very person who would eventually betray him (Judas) - while at the same time teaching vital lesson on humility (John 13)
A love has to be extraordinarily great to love sinners like us.
The Lesser the Object, The Greater the Love
3. The Expression of the Love:
The greater the expression, the more marvelous the love.
Prodigal Son in Luke, chapter 15
Lost sheep - 99 sheep loses 1, only 1%
vs. 6 - he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’
The Lost Coin - 10 coins loses 1, 10%
Vs. 9 When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin which I had lost!’ 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
The Lost Son - 2 sons, loses 1, 50%
vs. 31 for this brother of yours was dead and has begun to live, and was lost and has been found.’”
