μέτρον (metron)- your area of authority

I.       Metron overview.

II.       What is a Metron?

a.      Noun- measure a unit of length or volume or it could mean an instrument of measurement

b.      Verb- μετρέω (metreō) to measure or evaluate

III.     Our Study 2 Corinthians 10:12-16

Limits of Paul’s Authority (NKJV)

12 For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. 13 We, however, will not boast beyond measure, but within the limits of the sphere, which God appointed us—a sphere which especially includes you. 14 For we are not overextending ourselves (as though our authority did not extend to you), for it was to you that we came with the gospel of Christ; 15 not boasting of things beyond measure, that is, in other men’s labors, but having hope, that as your faith is increased, we shall be greatly enlarged by you in our sphere, 16 to preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man’s sphere of accomplishment.

b.      Key Words

Depending on your translation. The key words may not pop out as readily.

Using the KJV:

Measure used 6 times

Boast used 3 times

Rule used 2 times

In the KJV one recognizes the English word measure as the most important word and Boast as the second most. Rule on the other hand may not even catch your attention since its only used twice in the English translation.

Using the NKJV

The number change significantly.

Measure used 3 times

Boast 3 used times

Sphere 4 used times

Now when we look at our key words, the word Sphere is most prominent being used more than the word measure. In the KJV sphere isn't used at all. It is translated as rule twice and measure a couple of times. This word Sphere, in the NKJV is the key word in this passage. Using another translation you might find the word Area as your keyword.

All this to say, when doing word studies and bible study it is just as important to use different translations and compare the words used to translate the Greek or Hebrew words as it is to define the Greek or Hebrew words. Especially when studying a Hebrew or Greek idiom.

An idiom is a figure of speech or an expression that cant be understood by definitions of the words themselves. "to keep tabs on" is an English idiom. An idiom in other words is a fancy way of saying jargon.

τό μέτρον κανών

This is a Greek idiom translated several different ways by bible translators "proper limits", "limits of the sphere", "area of ministry", "measure of the rule", "measure of the sphere", "area of authority", "area of influence". On the surface, not any two translations come close to another in translating this idiom.

NLT v13

We will not boast about things done outside our area of authority. We will boast only about what has happened within the boundaries of the work God has given us, which includes our working with you.

c.      sphere— a field or range of influence. God assigned to the apostle Paul his sphere of work, an area of activity that included Corinth.

sphere of influence a territorial area within which the political influence or the interests of one nation are held to be more or less paramount.

Notice the parallels between Jabez prayer and Gen 1:28 for blessing and establishing.
