Peter has been discussion how we are to respond to suffering. He continues this thought as he moves into verse 18 describing the example of Christ!
You know it is going to be a thrilling week of study as you look at the passage deeper and every theologian is saying that these verses are the MOST DIFFICULT to grapple with to translate and interpret from the Greek.
I don’t think Peter set out to write the most complicated passage of scripture here
I really feel Peter wanted his readers to CLEARLY understand and apply to their lives what he is expressing
Peter is a basic, to the point, get his message across quick, simple and direct!!! (Fish or cut Bait… kind of guy)
Let’s remember what we know from the CONTEXT of scripture…
the context we are in with Peter's letter…
Even what Peter has even declared before...
These things will help keep things on track and clear
Today we are going to look at the salvation we have in Christ alone as it is so beautifully depicted through Noah, as it is demonstrated in baptism, and powerfully declared with His authority!!! 1 Peter 3:18-22
1 Peter 3:18–22 NLT
Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit. So he went and preached to the spirits in prison—those who disobeyed God long ago when God waited patiently while Noah was building his boat. Only eight people were saved from drowning in that terrible flood. And that water is a picture of baptism, which now saves you, not by removing dirt from your body, but as a response to God from a clean conscience. It is effective because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Now Christ has gone to heaven. He is seated in the place of honor next to God, and all the angels and authorities and powers accept his authority.

Salvation Through Christ Alone

Peter does an amazing keeping Christ at the focal point in his letter and as our prime example… As Peter has been addressing churches who are suffering and our suffering for even doing what is right he looks to Christ’s sufferings...
Four our sins… (this is WHY we need salvation)
ONCE for ALL… (John 3:16 “the world”)
This is a complete work!
He could because He was perfect… NO SIN!!! (Lamb of God)
Sin = missing the mark
Romans 6:23 states our sin earns death!
Jesus took that death on Himself
WHY?… to Restore relationship / NOT RELIGION
Death was conquered… RESURRECTION!!! 100% man & 100% God
Jesus explains His sacrifice in John 10:17-18 ONLY GOD!!!
John 10:17–18 NLT
“The Father loves me because I sacrifice my life so I may take it back again. No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily. For I have the authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. For this is what my Father has commanded.”
Peter reminds hose he writes to who are suffering about the Savior who they have placed their faith in… he goes on to encourage them in their suffering by bringing to mind God’s salvation and the suffering of Noah…

Depicted Through Noah

This portion has created many improper ideas… Once again taken in context and allowing the text and scriptures to clarify things makes it rather simple...
Where did Jesus go? “Prison or Hades”… place of confinement while waiting the resurrection of the dead and awaiting judgement Revelation 20:11-15 states how death and hades will be thrown into the lake of fire
Hades is a temporary place while Hell is an eternal place
Did Jesus spend the three days in hades while in the tomb?… NO! in Luke 23:43
Luke 23:43 NLT
And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
Who are the spirits?verse 20 answers this clearly!
NT refers to people who die as souls rather than spirits
These are most likely fallen angels / demonic spirits from Genesis 6
They had stepped out of bounds… engaging with mankind as God did not allow for
This was not a message of the gospel… death is the final opportunity
This was most likely a victory proclamation
Peter’s emphasis here however is not to define hell or spirits but to once again FOCUS OUR ATTENTION TO CHRIST!!!
Christ being God had patience… in Noah’s day 120 years
In both letters Peter draws our attention to the Lord’s patience
Genesis 7:1;7… the door to the ark was open
The ark is a picture of salvation
Noah suffered, living in a world so evil man would seek intimacy even with demons, proclaiming God, living set apart
Peter writes to encourage those suffering then and now
The flood water did not save Noah… Hebrews 11:6-7 declares it was his faith!!!
Hebrews 11:6–7 NLT
And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him. It was by faith that Noah built a large boat to save his family from the flood. He obeyed God, who warned him about things that had never happened before. By his faith Noah condemned the rest of the world, and he received the righteousness that comes by faith.
What Peter depicts for us through Noah he now demonstrates for us through the example of baptism...

Demonstrated in Baptism

Peter clarifies for his readers concerning baptism relating it to Noah… the early church, as we do here, practiced immersion in water for baptism.
Baptism is a picture… Death, Burial, Resurrection
Baptism meant a clean break with the past & Candidates for baptism were interrogated carefully
The ark saved… the water separated them from evil and the world
Baptism pictures what does save us… the resurrection of Christ!
Peter understood this… even with the Roman Centurion and his family in Acts 10:44-48
Water washes dirt but not sin… it is the blood of Christ that washes our sin!
Giving us a clean conscience
Baptism is a response to what Christ has done to save… through the power of His resurrection and peter closes by reminding His readers of the magnificent authority of Jesus Christ!!!

Declared with His Authority

Jesus Christ… risen, living, resurrected has power...
Over the ones who disobeyed in Noah’s time
Over the ones causing suffering in Peter’s time
Over ALL and He is seated with Honor bestowed by God
We should do the same… giving Him honor, living in contrast
We remember today as we close with communion…
NOT HIS DEATH ALL OVER… but a picture!
Remember He died ONCE for ALL!
What a beautiful message Peter gives his readers, so clear, so encouraging, so powerful!!!
Jesus Christ suffered for your salvation and mine, He patiently waits, having declared victory through His resurrection, He is given honor and power, that we should face whatever suffering may come as we set ourselves apart for Him and live a life that points to Christ even if we must suffer for a little while.
