Introduction

We have in Jesus in a King/Priest. The better we understand those roles in our lives the better we see the beauty of His holiness.
What does it mean that Jesus is Priest/King?
We are not used to a monarchy; like the Snodes
Passage Introduction
20+ references in the NT, most of an OT passage
Jesus uses it to describe who he is
Peter, first Christian sermon
Writer of Hebrews showing history of redemption comes here
helpful when determining who is speaking; best commentary
Jesus at a “press conference” had questions politics, taxes, resurrection.
Jesus then asks a question. My turn. Luke 20:41-44 41 And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David’s son? 42 And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 43 Till I make thine enemies thy footstool. 44 David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son?
Jesus reminds them that their is prophecy of one coming as a descendent of David that is greater than him.
Important to know that David is speaking. Some believe this is someone, like Zadok the priest, speaking of David.
Basic Summary: The psalmist (David) receives a revelation/oracle that his descendant, who is his lord, will be enabled by Yahweh and assisted by his willing subjects to establish dominion over the nations and reign in honor and glory as a royal king, priest, and warrior.

Look for the following as we read.

A The LORD installs the king

B The king is sent out to conquer

C The day of power

D The LORD swears a solemn oath

C1 The day of wrath

B1 The king goes out to conquer

A1 The LORD installs the king

Psalm 110 (KJV 1900)
A Psalm of David.
1 The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, Until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
2 The Lord shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: Rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.
3 Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness From the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.
4 The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever After the order of Melchizedek.
5 The Lord at thy right hand Shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath.
6 He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; He shall wound the heads over many countries.
7 He shall drink of the brook in the way: Therefore shall he lift up the head.

The Lord said unto my Lord

Psalm 110:1 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, Until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
Though not necessary it is very helpful how the word Lord is spelled differently in most of our Bibles. (All caps vs Capital L)
LORD is Yahweh, “my Lord” is David’s Lord which the context will make clear is the Messiah

David received this from God

Matthew 22:43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
David serves as a prophet receiving two oracles or matters of prophecy from God.
Emphasis being that it is a word from God. 1 Peter 4:11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Message delivered is significant

David was referring to his descendant as his master
Sitting at the right hand of Yahweh means that this king was to be exalted to the power and dominion and honor of heaven itself—before he establishes dominion in all the earth
A greater than David or Solomon is coming Luke 11:31 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

Message would have been surprising

A descendant greater than David?
Jesus tried to get his critics to explain this idea as well, but they had no answer. Luke 20:41 And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David’s son?
The first line speaks of honor next to God. The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand
The second line speaks of his assuming his complete rule. Until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

Until

Jesus' current work is that of a priest Heb 8:1 Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;
Until. Hebrews 10:12-13 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; 13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.
Transition: The coming king will be given authority and power to establish his rule on earth. Who and how is this so and when will this happen?

King will establish rule

Psalm 110:2 (KJV 1900)
2 The Lord shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: Rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.

Send the Rod

Picture Moses holding a rod out to the Red Sea Exodus 14:16 But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.
This is prophesied in Daniel 7:13-14 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. 14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

Out of Zion

Zion is the administrative center of the Kingdom, original city of David and home of the temple
Zion, Jerusalem, is mentioned often in prophecy.
The king will reign in Mount Zion Psalm 2:6 Yet have I set my king Upon my holy hill of Zion.
The people of Zion will be comforted Isaiah 30:19
Those who are left in Zion will be holy Isa. 4:3
The nations will go to Zion to learn Isa. 2:2–3
Zion will never again be troubled Isa. 33:20

Thy people shall be willing

Psalm 110:3 (KJV 1900)
3 Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness From the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.
Thy people: Taking all of Scripture into view on the ultimate event, “your people” would refer to all who are followers of the king.
Womb of the morning: the coming of the king to establish his reign on earth is the “dawning” of a new day. And just as the dawn gives birth to the dew in splendor and great number, the future king will appear with all the company of his host.
Dew of thy youth: At dawn dew is discovered all over the ground, instantly appearing, fresh and innumerable. The willing servants of the king will be with the king suddenly, and in abundance
Dew seen as an irresistible force 2 Samuel 17:12 So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground: and of him and of all the men that are with him there shall not be left so much as one.
Transition: Our King Priest will lead us willing into battle and will deliver this world from death.

The King will be the High Priest forever

Psalm 110:4 (KJV 1900)
4 The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever After the order of Melchizedek.

Unlike David, his Lord (Messiah), will be the High Priest.

In Israel there could be only one order of High Priest
The only way that a descendant of David could become the official high priest was for the order of Aaron to come to an end.
As this appointed priest of God, the king will not be limited to Salem as Melchizedek was, but will rule over and be priest for the whole world!
Thou art a priest for ever After the order of Melchizedek. which came later than the law, was rooted in the stipulations of a superior covenant because its priesthood did not depend on a legal requirement. Instead, the priesthood established by the oath arose from a familial bond—for the word of the oath “appoints a Son” who has been made perfect forever
Heb 7:28 28 For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore.

This oath was so important that the author of Hebrews refers to it five times (Hebrews 5:6, 5:10, 6:20, 7:17, and 7:21).

· Hebrews 5:5-6 and 5:10 emphasize that this was Yahweh’s declaration, not something that the Messiah claimed for Himself.
· Hebrews 6:20, the emphasis is on the idea that Jesus the Messiah serves now and forever as a living, active High Priest for His people.
· Hebrews 7:17 emphasizes that the priesthood of Jesus the Messiah according to the order of Melchizedek is better than the priestly order of Aaron, because it is eternal and will never end.
· Hebrews 7:21 emphasizes that the priesthood of Jesus the Messiah according to the order of Melchizedek is better than the priestly order of Aaron because it was founded on a direct oath of Yahweh, unlike the priestly order of Aaron.
What does the Bible say about Melchizedek? Going to be answered in a few weeks from now on a Sunday night.

Our King being a priest changes our role as servants.

As a priest, the Messiah has sanctified us and made us spiritual servants!
The original intention for Israel, a kingdom or priests and a holy nation Exod. 19:5–6
Because our King is the eternal High Priest we are a nation of priests. 1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
Transition: We have become a royal priesthood being led by the High Priest, King.

The King who is the eternal High Priest will come as a Warrior

Psalm 110:5–6 (KJV 1900)
5 The Lord at thy right hand Shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath.
6 He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; He shall wound the heads over many countries.

Only Jesus could do this.

Acts 2:24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. 25 For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:

In Jesus we find the fulfillment in all we could ever desire in a King, Priest

“Fairy tales do not tell children dragons exist. Children already know the dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed.”
You know dragons/evil/sin/death exist.
We have more than a fairy tale telling us dragons can be killed.

Drink of the brook

Psalm 110:7 (KJV 1900)
7 He shall drink of the brook in the way: Therefore shall he lift up the head.
It is a significant touch of Scripture also to remind us that this glorious future king is human enough to drink from the brook.
Jesus, the resurrected body, is sitting on the right hand of the father.
He has been seated there for the last two thousand years. How long will He remain seated there?

Lift up the head.

Battle is over. He is pursuing his foes until they are all vanquished.
Story of David killing almost all the Amalekites 1 Samuel 30:17 And David smote them from the twilight even unto the evening of the next day: and there escaped not a man of them, save four hundred young men, which rode upon camels, and fled.
Our King/ Priest will destroy even the last of our enemies 1 Cor 15:25-26 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.
Not only will Yahweh enjoy honor and glory when all enemies are defeated, but his king will receive honor and glory—quite a contrast to the shame and abuse he suffered in the history of the world.

Application not Speculation

I’m convinced that many Christians become so engrossed in studies of Revelation because speculation is easier than application.
We would rather guess about distant events than love our neighbor next door today.

What was Jesus teaching to those in Luke 20?

Luke 20:40–47 (KJV 1900)
40 And after that they durst not ask him any question at all.
41 And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David’s son?
42 And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
43 Till I make thine enemies thy footstool.
44 David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son?
45 Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples,
46 Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;
47 Which devour widows’ houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.

The more personal God is the more you have to deal with His will.

Pharisees said the Messiah would just be a political leader. They came face to face with truth!
Scribes wanted a religion but not a relationship.
“An 'impersonal God'-well and good. A subjective God of beauty, truth and goodness, inside our own heads-better still. A formless life-force surging through us, a vast power which we can tap-best of all. But God himself, alive, pulling at the other end of the cord, perhaps approaching at an infinite speed, the hunter, King, husband-that is quite another matter.” Lewis
They didn’t want God to be that real in their lives.
They stopped asking questions in v. 40. They had to acknowledge the logical conclusions if they continued.
They wanted a Jesus they could debate in the synagogue on the weekends but were looking for someone that would alter their lives.

The Messiah as King/Priest brings things together people do not believe can be together

Kings represented God to the people. Priests represented to God.
Seen when Jesus will ride into town on what is often called Psalm Sunday. He rides into town as a King. Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: Behold, thy King cometh unto thee: He is just, and having salvation; Lowly, and riding upon an ass, And upon a colt the foal of an ass.

Jonathan in his sermon “The Admirable Conjunction of Diverse Excellencies in Christ Jesus

There, in Jesus Christ, meet:
1. Infinite highness and infinite condescension.
2. Infinite justice and infinite grace.
3. Infinite glory and lowest humility.
4. Infinite majesty and transcendent meekness.
5. Deepest reverence towards God and equality with God.
6. Infinite worthiness of good, and the greatest patience under sufferings of evil.
7. An exceeding spirit of obedience, with supreme dominion over heaven and earth.
8. Absolute sovereignty and perfect resignation.
9. Self-sufficiency, and an entire trust and reliance on God.

Contrast but not contradiction

A lamb and a lion.
A priest and a king
A judge and the one who offers forgiveness for sins

Seen in life of Christ

Goes to the money changers and thrown them out of the temple.
Goes to the dead young and says “damsel wake up.”
Weeping outside of Lazarus tomb.
Ask disciples to stay awake and watch and pray. He says”spirit is willing but flesh is weak."

Do you see the beauty of His holiness? We will someday be arrayed in it as we follow Him to battle.

Psalm 110:3 Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness From the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.

God does our ministry to him to be done willingly as people who have seen His beauty. That is what will motivate in that day. It should today.

Melchizedek not by lineage but by having seen the beauty of the holiness becomes a priest.
Someday Jesus will lead us into war. We will be arrayed as royal priests.
Jesus is our King/Priest today. You should see your identity in this today not just on that great day. 1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
