MIRACLES

March 22, 2009                                                                       John 9

THE BIG IDEA:    Physical sight is something we all take for granted until it’s damaged or lost. Jesus miraculously healed a man’s blindness.  But the ______________ miracle is when we are healed of our spiritual blindness and begin to see the things _________ wants us to see.

As Jesus went along, he saw a man blind from birth.  His disciples asked him “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”   John 9:1-2

WHAT DOES GOD WANT US TO SEE WHEN LIFE IS BLURRY?

1.     SEE THROUGH THE _____________________.

“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.” John 9:3

WHAT MOUNTAIN IN YOUR LIFE
SEEMS IMMOVABLE?

I will go before you and will level the mountains; I will break down gates of bronze and cut through bars of iron.  I will give you…riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the Lord… Isaiah 45:2-3

2.     SEE GOD’S RESPONSE TO INSTANT ___________________.

“Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means Sent).  So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.
John 9:7

WHAT HAS GOD ASKED YOU TO DO THAT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE?

I see you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands…Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law…you are near, O Lord and all your commands are true.

Psalms 119:10, 18, 151

3.     SEE YOUR BLIND ____________.

The man answered, "Now that is remarkable! You don't know where(Jesus) comes from, yet he opened my eyes… If this man were not from God, he could do nothing." John 9:30,33

WHAT IS YOUR BLIND SPOT?

THE MOST IMPORTANT RESULT OF FINDING CLARITY IS THAT WE CAN SEE ____________.

Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"  "Who is he, sir?" the man asked. "Tell me so that I may believe in him."  Jesus said, "You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you."  Then the man said, "Lord, I believe," and he worshiped him.
John 9:35-38

MIRACLES

March 22, 2009                                                                       John 9

THE BIG IDEA:    Physical sight is something we all take for granted until it’s damaged or lost. Jesus miraculously healed a man’s blindness.  But the greatest miracle is when we are healed of our spiritual blindness and begin to see the things God wants us to see.

As Jesus went along, he saw a man blind from birth.  His disciples asked him “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”   John 9:1-2

**One of the reasons I love this story is that I have ridiculously bad eyesight**

*Our lives are full of people who need a miracle – or wish they’d gotten one, instead of what life gave them.

**Today, we’re going to examine this situation:   During those times – what is it that God wants us to see?

WHAT DOES GOD WANT US TO SEE WHEN LIFE IS BLURRY?

1.     SEE THROUGH THE OBSTACLES.

**You know what an optical illusion is, don’t you?  It’s when what you see is not equal to what is real!

è  Picture of railroad tracks ****

“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.” John 9:3

*What obstacles are you dealing with today?

**A sick child/ an aging parent?

Your boss told you he wants to see you first thing Monday morning.

Your spouse just said, “We need to to talk” – and you kind of know that’s not going to be a positive conversation.

Finances – you’re to the point of putting the bills in a hat and doing a drawing to see who the lucky one is that gets paid this month.

Now, all those situations are real – and the pain assoc. with those is real – but the moment that problem leads you to a place of hopelessness – you’ve crossed over to a very bad, destructive place for you.

You’re about to miss what God wants to do to show His power and bring Glory to Himself in your life.

2.     SEE GOD’S RESPONSE TO INSTANT OBEDIENCE.

***Blind man is there, minding his own business – listening to people discuss whose sin caused his problem.

** Then He hears ---- spit!

“Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means Sent).  So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.
John 9:7

**What the man didn’t do:

1.     Yeah, I’m going to need to pray about that.

2.     Didn’t say, you know that sounds kind of OT to me

WHAT HAS GOD ASKED YOU TO DO THAT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE?

***Delayed obedience is disobedience every time***

**So many of you took the 90 Day Tithing Challenge a few weeks ago.  I know how big of a step that was for some of you.

**The area where God has been working on me is in opportunities to be extra generous – those times outside of Sunday morning when God prompts me to give someone something.

**Thursday – now I just don’t normally do that kind of thing.

I did and knew it was the right thing to do.

Almost hesitant to tell you the next part because I don’t want it to sound like the only reason we need to be obedient is so we can benefit from it.

**Went home Thursday afternoon – was going through the mail
Envelope with our name on the Addressee area – but our address in the return address spot.

Opened it up & a short note with no signature, saying, “from a family who appreciates you.” – 5 - $20 bills.

I see you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands…Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law…you are near, O Lord and all your commands are true.

Psalms 119:10, 18, 151

3.     SEE YOUR BLIND SPOTS.

**tough lesson every newer driver has to learn is “we all have blind spots**

** People around the blind man are arguing theology and blame and cause & effect – and all of that becomes so import. To them that they can’t even recognize that the Son of God – they are blinded by their need to have every detail of people’s problems and of their own beliefs figured out perfectly – that they miss God in the process!

The man answered, "Now that is remarkable! You don't know where(Jesus) comes from, yet he opened my eyes… If this man were not from God, he could do nothing." John 9:30,33

WHAT IS YOUR BLIND SPOT?

what is it that you know you’re obsessive about?  That you can’t get away from? That has in reality become more important to you than seeing God.

THE MOST IMPORTANT RESULT OF FINDING CLARITY IS THAT WE CAN SEE JESUS

Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"  "Who is he, sir?" the man asked. "Tell me so that I may believe in him."  Jesus said, "You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you."  Then the man said, "Lord, I believe," and he worshiped him.
John 9:35-38

       BELIEVING
IS SEEING. – not the other way around

**Story of John Newton:  Here’s a boy named John Newton, who was born in London in the Eighteenth Century.  John was the son of a Godly, Christ following mother and the son of a God hating father.  When John was six years old, his mother died, and he instantly became embittered at the God that she loved.  I mean, if God was so good, as she said He was, why would He take her from me?  Do you see the fuzziness in his life right there?

at age eleven, John Newton joined his father as a merchant sailor, and he grew and festered in his hate for God.  He lived in direct rebellion to the very nature of God.  The obvious career choice at that time for John was, he became the captain of a slave ship.  There were over six million slaves stripped from their homes and families in the Eighteenth Century in Africa, and John Newton was right in the middle of it.  He personally ordered children stripped from their parents, wives abused in ways we can’t talk about in front of their husbands, fathers taken from their kids.  It is cruel, and it is godless, and it is hateful as you can imagine.  He’s was on a voyage headed back to London, and they encounter a storm that he thinks sure is going to end his life.  Finally, he is going to get what he feels he deserves, but he doesn’t die.  He, instead, he finds a book on that ship and he begins to read it.  The book is called “The Imitation of Christ.”  And in the pages of that book, he saw for the first time, Christ.

That day, he became a follower of Christ, and it wasn’t too much longer after that that John Newton wrote a song, and we are going to close this series by singing it together.  At all of our campuses, if you know it, sing it with all of your heart.  The song he wrote goes like this, “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound.”  Come on, with passion.  “That saved a wretch like me.  I once was lost, but now I’m found.  Was blind, but now I see.”

**That’s the greatest miracle of all – the one God wants to do in your life this morning – to give you spiritual sight --- forgiveness – and a relationship with Him that is real and lasting.
