Intro:
What is the best way to prove a point - give an example right? Especially if people are unwilling to believe your claim, whether you are true or false, by giving an example of your claim, you hearers will know the truth. For example I can build a chicken coop. Don’t believe me just looky here (show pictures)
Jesus was telling them that His teachings were true and that He was power of the physical because He believed and was from the Spiritual. He was also trying to lead them all, including the leaders, into repentance, we see this in John 7:19 then we see it played out at the end of Chapter 7 and into Chapter 8.
“Did not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why do you seek to kill Me?”
He proves the point in the woman who was brought to Him for condemnation. He showed them they absolutely didn’t know the Law of God, only knew some words and instructions put on a piece of paper.

Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time, and then I am going to the one who sent me. You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.” The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks? What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me,’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”

On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

B. The Division
1. Some said this and that
On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.” Others said, “He is the Messiah.” Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee? Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?” Thus the people were divided because of Jesus.

2. Divisions will come in the crowd
a. The crowd is fickle and cares nothing for the individual

i. Good of the many outweigh the good of the one

“What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off?

3. Fear of the Crowd
Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?” “No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied. “You mean he has deceived you also?” the Pharisees retorted. “Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him? No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.” Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, “Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?” They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.” Then they all went home,
a. Bad decisions are made because of the crowd
b. Fearing the crowd will cloud our judgement
Have seen it time and again in Church - so scared to lose people that we will bend to the crowd and dilute the Word of God. We will become ear ticklers because the crowd is fickle.

A. Prayer
1. Assumption of prayer
a. Where Jesus often went to pray
b. A place of solitude away from everyone
2. Early in the Morning
a. Usually Denotes prayer in the Scripture
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.
b. Jesus needed time with God, with the Father
Started walking again and I realize the importance of taking that time outside with God. Not in a busy place or where there are distractions but in a quiet secluded place.
B. Teaching
At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them.
1. This is right during the same time
Added from later manuscripts. However, it is consistent with John’s theology. It is no less inspired. Why don’t we see it in early manuscripts, I don’t know but I can speculate. This might cause controversy with a non-believer but it doesn’t have to. Maybe John remembered something later on and added to the story. We see new editions of books come out all the time with variances and we don’t doubt their validity.

a. Didn’t care what the religious leaders thought

Still, many in the crowd believed in him. They said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man?”
c. Didn’t abandon these new believers
d. Jesus doesn’t leave us - He teaches us
C. Enter the Knuckle Heads - A.K.A scribes and pharisees
they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act. “Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?”
1. Testing Him
a. They were prideful and arrogant
b. Thought they knew the Law
c. They only knew the letter of the Law not the Heart of it
i. They lacked love
‘But I have this against you, that you have left your first love. ‘Therefore remember from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first; or else I am coming to you and will remove your lampstand out of its place—unless you repent.
ii. No doubt that at one time they loved
iii. It had become legalism and about themselves instead of God
2. Jesus Response
They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there.

3. The Woman
Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

Conclusion:
Close with this from John 8, the next chapter, but it is so important to hit it now
So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
