Intro:
For most of us, what we believe, dictates how we apply the Bible. The stuff we are going to be faced with tomorrow, when we go to school, when we go to work and even if all we do is stay home....the outcomes will be determined by how we apply the bible to them.
All during our lives, we have to make decisions, we have to take a path based on what we know.
But here is the challenge... That also means our traditions, our history, our culture even our environment can have an impact on the decisions we make as we are navigating thru life.
All during our lives, we have to make decisions, we have to take a path based on what we know.
But what happens when what we believe is not fully inline with what the bible says. And what happens when the direction is not clear?!
Crazy example...
The bible tells us that all things are possible…Phil 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
So, I think I can do a cartwheel! Should I do it?
This is where we really have to make sure we are interpreting what the bible tells us so that we can make sure to take the right path.
Lets take a look at this mornings text...
Scripture:
Luke 24:1–12 NLT
1 But very early on Sunday morning the women went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 2 They found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. 3 So they went in, but they didn’t find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 As they stood there puzzled, two men suddenly appeared to them, clothed in dazzling robes. 5 The women were terrified and bowed with their faces to the ground. Then the men asked, “Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive? 6 He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Remember what he told you back in Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and that he would rise again on the third day.” 8 Then they remembered that he had said this. 9 So they rushed back from the tomb to tell his eleven disciples—and everyone else—what had happened. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and several other women who told the apostles what had happened. 11 But the story sounded like nonsense to the men, so they didn’t believe it. 12 However, Peter jumped up and ran to the tomb to look. Stooping, he peered in and saw the empty linen wrappings; then he went home again, wondering what had happened.
Title, Prayer:
Fork in the Road…Prayer
Application:
Its all about that fork in the road. We reach a point where we have to make a decision or a choice and we are supposed to make those choices based on what we believe. But do we always make the right choice?
What do you do when you are driving? Do you just keep going? How do you respond to the uncertainty. Do you just turn around and go back to a point that is familiar? When I was in the army, I was taught to learn and apply what I learned about direction. (where is the sun, moss on the north side of the trees)
Exegesis:
There are four steps:
Know (two things)
Know the text (One interpretation, Many Applications)
Know yourself (Assets and liabilities)
Relate (Relate what you know to every aspect of your life)
A new relationship with God
A new relationship with yourself
A new relationship to other people
A new relationship to the enemy
The Word exposes your sin
The Word gives you God’s promises
The Word gives you God’s commands
The Word gives you examples to follow
Meditate (Stop and just think about biblical stuff)(crockpot)
Practice (Put it to work)
Benediction:
Lets look at what our scripture was saying.
Jesus told his disciples what was going to happen, but when it did, they did not believe. They were still stuck on how life was. But what they knew was not the truth! They thought that Jesus was really just dead. Even though Jesus had given them the truth, they could not accept it.
Vs 11 They were at a fork in the road when the women came back and told them what happened. But the disciples fell back on what they knew from tradition, what they knew about life and death. What they thought they knew began to impact how they acted.
But Peter…is this why He was the rock Christ built His church on?
Here we are, Easter Sunday and God has asked us to apply the bible to every aspect of our lives. He sent His son Christ to die for us, Christ then rose from the dead for us. What do we do at this fork in the road? Does Easter Sunday come and go and then Monday comes with no change in how we apply the bible based on what we believe?
Do we have on our minds every Monday morning how Christ died FOR us? How Christ will provide for us? Do we still continue to fear, or worry?
Everyday is a new day that will bring new challenges, new questions that will make us rely on how we apply the bible to ours lives.
