Leprosy

LEPROSY IN HOUSES ETC
Leviticus 14:54–57 NRSV
54 This is the ritual for any leprous disease: for an itch, 55 for leprous diseases in clothing and houses, 56 and for a swelling or an eruption or a spot, 57 to determine when it is unclean and when it is clean. This is the ritual for leprous diseases.
BROAD DEFINITION OF LEPROSY AS ANY SKIN DIEASE
THE PRIESTS DO A LOT
NO MEDICAL TREATMENT
BUT THEY DO THE DETERMINING
WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF BEING FOUND UNCLEAN?
Leviticus 13:45–46 NRSV
45 The person who has the leprous disease shall wear torn clothes and let the hair of his head be disheveled; and he shall cover his upper lip and cry out, “Unclean, unclean.” 46 He shall remain unclean as long as he has the disease; he is unclean. He shall live alone; his dwelling shall be outside the camp.
IF UNCLEAN - YOU ARE EXILED TO OUTSIDE THE CAMP
NO MORE FAMILY
NO MORE WORK, CAREER
NO MORE COMMUNITY
AS LONG AS YOU PRESENT SIGNS, I.E., SWELLING, ERUPTION, SPOTTING, YOU ARE UNCLEAN AND UNDER PERMANENT ISOLATION UNTIL YOU ARE NOT CLEAN
BUT LEPROSY IS FOR DISEASES THAT MANIFEST THEMSELVES OUTSIDE ON THE SURFACE OF THE BODY, WHAT ABOUT INSIDE

Discharges

Leviticus 15:25–31 (NRSV)
25 If a woman has a discharge of blood for many days, not at the time of her impurity, or if she has a discharge beyond the time of her impurity, all the days of the discharge she shall continue in uncleanness; as in the days of her impurity, she shall be unclean. 26 Every bed on which she lies during all the days of her discharge shall be treated as the bed of her impurity; and everything on which she sits shall be unclean, as in the uncleanness of her impurity.
27 Whoever touches these things shall be unclean, and shall wash his clothes, and bathe in water, and be unclean until the evening. 28 If she is cleansed of her discharge, she shall count seven days, and after that she shall be clean. 29 On the eighth day she shall take two turtledoves or two pigeons and bring them to the priest at the entrance of the tent of meeting.
30 The priest shall offer one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering; and the priest shall make atonement on her behalf before the Lord for her unclean discharge.
31 Thus you shall keep the people of Israel separate from their uncleanness, so that they do not die in their uncleanness by defiling my tabernacle that is in their midst.
REPEAT
31 Thus you shall keep the people of Israel separate from their uncleanness, so that they do not die in their uncleanness by defiling my tabernacle that is in their midst.
SO THIS IS THE STATED PURPOSE - TO KEEP UNCLEAN PEOPLE FROM ENTERING AND DEFILING THE TEMPLE
BUT THE EFFECT WAS TO CAST OUT AND SEPARATE THE DISEASED
WE STILL DO THAT
WE DON’T WANT TO GET TOO CLOSE TO THE SICK
IT MIGHT BE CONTAGIOUS
BUT THESE RULES BECOME OPPRESSIVE
THEY WERE BEING USED OUT OF PROPORTION TO THIER USEFULLNESS
THEY WERE BEING USED TO OPPRESS CLASSES
THE PHARISEES BECAME THE SABBATH POLICE
AND JESUS TURNS THESE RULES UPSIDE DOWN
Mark 2:27 ESV
27 And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
Mark 2:27 NLT
27 Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.
BUT JESUS DECLARES HIS MESSAGE TO FREE THE OPPRESSED
Luke 4:17–19 (NRSV)
17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
TWO EXAMPLES OF HIM DOING THIS
JESUS CLEANSES A LEPER
Luke 5:12–14 (NRSV)
12 Once, when he was in one of the cities, there was a man covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he bowed with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you choose, you can make me clean.” 13 Then Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him, and said, “I do choose. Be made clean.” Immediately the leprosy left him.
14 And he ordered him to tell no one. “Go,” he said, “and show yourself to the priest, and, as Moses commanded, make an offering for your cleansing, for a testimony to them.”
THEY WERE BACK INTO COMMUNITY
BUT ONLY ONE REALIZED WHERE THE FREEDOM HAD COME FROM
A WOMAN HEALED
Luke 8:43–48 (NRSV)
43 Now there was a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years; and though she had spent all she had on physicians, no one could cure her. 44 She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his clothes, and immediately her hemorrhage stopped.
45 Then Jesus asked, “Who touched me?” When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds surround you and press in on you.” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; for I noticed that power had gone out from me.”
47 When the woman saw that she could not remain hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before him, she declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. 48 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”
SHE WAS FREED FROM 12 YEARS OF BONDAGE, ALONE, TRYING EVERYTHING THAT SHE COULD, SPENT ALL OF HER MONEY
JESUS PULLS HER FRONT AND CENTER
AND LISTENS TO HER STORY
AND CALLS HER DAUGHTER
IMAGINE HER FEELING OF FREEDOM IN THAT MOMENT OF HEALING
QUESTIONS FROM HANDOUT:
Have you ever felt separated from community because of a perceived condition?
Have you ever experienced the freedom of being healed and brought back into the light?
