JESUS IS THE KING

LAST WEEK IN PS 2 WE SAW THAT JESUS IS THE KING APPOINTED BY GOD OF EVERYONE EVERYWHERE!
BUT WAIT...THERE'S MORE!

JESUS IS THE KING PRIEST

NOT ONLY KING BUT PRIEST!!!!
Psalm 110:1–4 ESV
1 The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.” 2 The Lord sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies! 3 Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours. 4 The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”
JESUS IS CLEARLY KING ANNOINTED TO RULE.
BUT HE IS ALSO A PRIEST! MELCHIZEDEK PRIEST/KING OF SALEM
REUNINTING IN JESUS OBEDIENCE WHAT WAS SEPERATED IN MOSES' FEAR.
THIS IS NOT SURPRISING BECAUSE....
WE WERE CREATED TO BE ROYAL PRIESTS.
Genesis 1:26 ESV
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
Genesis 2:15 ESV
15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.
WE WERE MADE TO RULE AS KINGS.
WE WERE MADE TO SERVE AS PRIESTS. WORK AND KEEP/GUARD ARE PRIESTLY WORDS. NOT JUST A GARDENER.

3 SCENES FROM MARK'S GOSPEL THAT REVEAL JESUS AS THE PRIEST KING!

Mark 2:1–12 ESV
1 And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. 2 And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. 3 And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. 4 And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. 5 And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” 6 Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8 And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? 9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— 11 “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” 12 And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”
JESUS REFERED TO HIMSELF AS THE "SON OF MAN" IN HEB LIT SON OF ADAM. THIS MEANT SOMETHING IN HIS CULTURE.
IT WAS A REFERENCE TO THE VISIONS OF DANIEL 7.
Daniel 7:13–14 ESV
13 “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. 14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.
HOLD ON TO THIS IMAGERY!
Mark 9:1–8 ESV
1 And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.” 2 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. 4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. 5 And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” 8 And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.
THIS WHOLE SCENE BRINGS TOGETHER SO MANY OT THREADS.
FIRST IT POINTS TO MOSES MEETING WITH GOD IN EXODUS 24, 28 AND 32-34.
MOSES ASCENDS MT. SINAI AND WAITS 6 DAYS BEFORE ENTERING THE CLOUD OF DIVINE GLORY.
TABERNACLE AND HIGH PRIEST GARMENTS.
SHINING FACE.
JESUS IS NOT JUST A NEW MOSES - HE IS THE ONE WHOM MOSES HAD SEEN. BOTH MOSES AND ELIJAH HAD SEEN A MANIFESTATION OF DIVINE GLORY ON THE MOUNTAIN AND SPOKE WITH YHWH.
Mark 9:9 ESV
9 And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
IN GENESIS 22 ABRAHAM IS ASKED BY GOD TO SACRIFICE HIS ONLY BELOVED SON. THE WAY MARK CONSTRUCTS HIS ACCOUNT IN MARK 9 PARRALLELS THIS SCENE.
THEY BOTH TAKE 3 PEOPLE
THEY ASCEND A HIGH MOUNTAIN
A VOICE SPEAKS FROM THE HEAVENS:
1. THIS IS MY SON, MY BELOVED ONE, LISTEN TO HIM
2. GOD’S PROMISE TO ABRAM:
Genesis 22:16–18 ESV
16 and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, 18 and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.”
NOT ONLY IS JESUS REVEALED TO BE THE ROYAL PRIEST JESUS IS GOING TO BE THE SACRIFICE.
Mark 14:55–59 ESV
55 Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none. 56 For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony did not agree. 57 And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.’ ” 59 Yet even about this their testimony did not agree.
STONE NOT BUT BY HUMAN HANDS TAKES US TO DANIEL 2.
Daniel 2:31–35 ESV
31 “You saw, O king, and behold, a great image. This image, mighty and of exceeding brightness, stood before you, and its appearance was frightening. 32 The head of this image was of fine gold, its chest and arms of silver, its middle and thighs of bronze, 33 its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of clay. 34 As you looked, a stone was cut out by no human hand, and it struck the image on its feet of iron and clay, and broke them in pieces. 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold, all together were broken in pieces, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, so that not a trace of them could be found. But the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.
JESUS IS THE STONE THAT BROKE NEBUCHADNEZZAR KINGDOM BUT NOW HE IS THE STONE THAT IS BREAKING THE TEMPLE!!!
Mark 14:60–62 ESV
60 And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?” 61 But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”
THIS TAKES US BACK TO THE SON OF MAN IMAGERY OF DANIEL 7.
JESUS IS PRESENTED AS THE TRUE KING PRIEST - THE MESSIAH - THE ONE WHO DID WHO ALL ELSE FAILED TO DO.
HIS OBEDIENCE BRINGS RECONCILIATION.
HE BRINGS THE PRESENCE OF GOD TO GOD'S IMAGERS.
1 Peter 2:4–12 ESV
4 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” 7 So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” 8 and “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 11 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. 12 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.
WHO HE IS CHANGES WHO WE ARE.
HE IS THE KING PRIEST WHO RULES AND SERVES.
WE ARE TO OBEY.
