GOOD FRIDAY
SEVEN CRIES FROM CALVARY, THE CROSS

John 7:45–47 “45 When the Temple guards returned without having arrested Jesus, the leading priests and Pharisees demanded, “Why didn’t you bring him in?” 46 “We have never heard anyone speak like this!” the guards responded. 47 “Have you been led astray, too?” the Pharisees mocked.”

I. THE CRY OF FORGIVENESS.

Luke 23:33–34 “33 When they came to a place called The Skull, they nailed him to the cross. And the criminals were also crucified—one on his right and one on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.”

1. The forgiveness, It was prophesied in the OT.

Isaiah 53:11–12 spoke these words: “11 When he (Jesus) sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And because of his experience, my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous, for he will bear all their sins. 12 I will give him the honors of a victorious soldier, because he exposed himself to death. He was counted among the rebels. He bore the sins of many and interceded for rebels.”

2. Forgiveness, forgiveness for you and me is backed by the power of Jesus Christ.

Matthew 9:5–7 “5 Is it easier to say ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up and walk’? 6 So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!” 7 And the man jumped up and went home!”

3. It is extensive, His forgiveness is extensive, complete, through, everlasting.........

Colossians 2:12–13 “12 For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead. 13 You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins.”

II. THE CRY OF SALVATION; Are we reaching out to Jesus this season of Easter, remembering what He has done for us?

Luke 23:41–42 “41 We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.” 42 Then he (one of the criminals on the other cross? said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.”

1. It proves salvation is by God’s grace.

Ephesians 2:8–9 “8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.”

2. It proves salvation is by Christ;

1 Timothy 2:5 “5 For, There is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus.”

Now church, is there really anything else I need to say this morning? We, you and I need and had better know Jesus. AMEN

3. It proves salvation comes instantly; This is the scripture I have people read that wants to invite Jesus into their heart.

Romans 10:9–10 “9 If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.”

13 For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

III. THE CRY AND SADNESS OF JESUS;

John 19:26–27 “26 When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her, “Dear woman, here is your son.” 27 And he said to this disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from then on this disciple took her into his home.”

1. It shows the compassion of Christ; i AM CERTAIN YOU CAN LOOK BACK AT YOUR LIFE AND REMEMBER SOMEONE WHO WAS SO VERY COMPASSIONATE. Isn’t it a wonderfully feeling even to this day? Jesus was like this.

Luke 7:12–13 12 A funeral procession was coming out as he approached the village gate. The young man who had died was a widow’s only son, and a large crowd from the village was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion. “Don’t cry!” he said.”

3. The obedience of Jesus sets forth an example that you and I are to learn from every day.

Ephesians 6:1–2 “1 Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. 2 “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise:”

IV. THE CRY OF DESERTION; JESUS KNEW HIS TIME ON EARTH WAS ALMOST FINISHED.

Matthew 27:46–47 “46 At about three o’clock, Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” 47 Some of the bystanders misunderstood and thought he was calling for the prophet Elijah.”

1. It reveals Christ’s love for mankind:

Jesus’ words in John 15:12–14 “12 This is my commandment:

Love each other in the same way I have loved you. 13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command.”

2. It reveals God’s holiness, this scripture again reveals to us that Our God will not tolerate sin, this is OT scripture.

Habakkuk 1:11–12 “11 They sweep past like the wind and are gone. But they are deeply guilty, for their own strength is their god.” 12 O Lord my God, my Holy One, you who are eternal— surely you do not plan to wipe us out? O Lord, our Rock, you have sent these Babylonians to correct us, to punish us for our many sins.”

3. It reveals God’s plan of salvation for us as sinners:

2 Corinthians 5:21 “21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.”

V. THE CRY OF SUFFERING; We have a hard time realizing that Jesus could suffer. We read in:

John 19:27–28 “27 And he said to this disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from then on this disciple took her into his home. 28 Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, “I am thirsty.”

1. It was prophesied, we read of Jesus’ suffering in:

Psalm 69:20–21 “20 Their insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair. If only one person would show some pity; if only one would turn and comfort me. 21 But instead, they give me poison for food; they offer me sour wine for my thirst.”

2. It reveals Christ’s humanity, isn’t is hard to “fathom” that Jesus was on earth living as “humans” lived but without sin?

Luke 2:49–51 “49 “But why did you need to search?” he asked. “Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?” 50 But they didn’t understand what he meant. 51 Then he returned to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. And his mother stored all these things in her heart.”

VI. THE CRY OF VICTORY, victory for you and I

John 19:30 “30 When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”

1. It shows salvation’s plan was finished, Jesus paid the ultimate price for our sins;

Hebrews 7:26–27 “26 He is the kind of high priest we need because he is holy and blameless, unstained by sin. He has been set apart from sinners and has been given the highest place of honor in heaven. 27 Unlike those other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices every day. They did this for their own sins first and then for the sins of the people. But Jesus did this once for all when he offered himself as the sacrifice for the people’s sins.”

2. It shows the Father’s work was finished;

John 6:38–39 “38 For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will. 39 And this is the will of God, that I should not lose even one of all those he has given me, but that I should raise them up at the last day.”

VII. THE CRY OF JESUS’ DEATH

Luke 23:46 “46 Then Jesus shouted, “Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!” And with those words he breathed his last.”

1. It reveals Christ’s yielded life;

Matthew 26:39 “39 He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”

2. It reveals Christ’s obedience; Philippians 2:8 “8 he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.

3. It reveals THE power of Jesus Christ:John 10:15 “15 just as my Father knows me and I know the Father. So I sacrifice my life for the sheep.” John 10:17–18 “17 “The Father loves me because I sacrifice my life so I may take it back again. 18 No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily. For I have the authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. For this is what my Father has commanded.”

AMEN
