The Ten (Or The One)

It’s Palm Sunday today. Did ya’’l know that? We’ll come back to that later.
I lost my DL the other day.
I don’t usually misplace things.
I was probably still a little goofy from the anesthetic.
So we had to run to the tag office this week.
It’s a pain.
The last time this happened was 25 years ago.
It was Christmas and I was living in Grove.
I came down and spent a few day at my Dad’s house.
I had set my wallet in the room that I was staying in.
It disappeared.
Because it was close to the end of the month, I had my rent money in cash.
There was over 500 in that wallet.
I wasn’t sure how I was going to pay rent.
Well, my Granny heard about my plight and gave me the missing money.
I still had to get my ID and other things, but at least I could pay rent.
I was in a bind, but Granny rescued me.
I was thankful.
Today we are going to talk about 10 people that were helped by Jesus, but only one was thankful.
Luke 17:11–19 NKJV
11 Now it happened as He went to Jerusalem that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. 12 Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, who stood afar off. 13 And they lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” 14 So when He saw them, He said to them, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed. 15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, 16 and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan. 17 So Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? 18 Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” 19 And He said to him, “Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.”

They asked for Help

First, we need to determine who these men were.
We don’t know what village, but it either in Galilee or Samaria.
They had heard of Jesus and so they went to ask for help.
There were 10 of them and they had something called Leprosy.
Leprosy is a disease caused by a slow-growing bacteria called Mycobacterium leprae.
Back then they thought it was highly contagious and devastating.
We now know that It doesn’t spread easily and it is curable.
What happens is that the bacteria attacks the nerves mostly in the eyes, hands, and feet.
That leads to secondary infections and can cripple hands and feet. It can cause paralysis and blindness.
There was no cure back then.
I sort of understand this disease.
There is no hope of getting better, only slowing the progress.
Eventually, I will be in a similar boat as them. My hands and feet will grow more and more crippled.
They needed help.
Some of us need help.
Some of us would like the touch of Jesus.

They needed to be Healed

Leprosy can be treated now. It’s not an easy treatment.
It takes 2 or 3 antibiotics over a period of 1-2 years.
That stops the bacteria, but often there is permanent damage to deal with.
If the nerve damage is severe enough, the body can actually absorb the fingers and toes that are affected.
The antibiotics will stow down and eventually stop the disease but the damage done may not be reversible.
I understand this because it’s true for me as well.
I cannot be cured by modern science and least right now.
And the damage that is done is done.
My knees and ankles will likely hurt the rest of my life.
I can have surgery to fix my knees and ankles and it may help, but only God can do a miracle like this.
That’s the same place these lepers are in. Only God can help.
They had Jesus with them so they hollered out to Jesus for Help
And he healed them.
I have cried out to God to heal me as well, but he hasn’t healed me.
I’m going to keep asking until either I’m healed or God tells me to stop.
However, I do know this: I will be healed one day.
It might be the last day, but I know I’ll be healed.

They should give God Honor

All 10 men were healed, but only one came back to thank Jesus.
What happened to the other 9? I don’t know and it doesn’t matter.
What matters is what Jesus said about the one that returned.
It’s easy to miss this, but remember that Jesus could be going through Samaria at the time.
The only man that came back was a Samaritan.
He fell down at the feet of Jesus and thanked him.
This is what we should be doing.
Why? Because Jesus has come for us.
That’s what Palm Sunday was all about.
They came in anticipation of the Messiah.
And he had come, so the celebrated.
They declared blessings on him.
But a few days later, they rejected him.
And they declared curses on him.
Maybe this sermon should have been titled the 9.
One of them understood and worshipped Jesus.
Lord, let us worship him.
Let us thank him what what he’s done.

Sometimes we are one of the nine, Help us to thank God all the time.

I can look at my life and say Lord, why did you make me this way? Lord, why do I have to hurt every day.

or I can say

Lord, help me through the day, Help me to praise you in every way, Give me strength is what I pray.

Here’s the deal - it’s about attitude. Do you have thoughts of gratitude?

What happens is that we get tied up in what’s going on in this world.
God’s perspective is larger than that.
He sees it all
That’s why he says in Romans 8:28
Romans 8:28 NKJV
28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
It might be for us or it might be for someone else.
Our problems are often tied to the fact that God gave us free will
We can’t blame God when he has given us the ability to do as we will
And he can see what’s going to happen.
It’s possible that our suffering is serving a greater purpose.
1 Timothy 2:4–6 NKJV
4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time,
Jesus endured the suffering of the cross so that all could be saved.
Don’t you think you can suffer a bit so that some may be saved?
Hebrews 9:27 NKJV
27 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,
Let’s serve God and praise him no matter what
