BREAK FROM EXODUS - BUT NOT REALLY
STORY OF THE BIBLE IS THE STORY REVOLVING AROUND THE QUESTION: WHO IS IN CHARGE?
NO SURPRISE THAT EASTER THEN AS THE CLIMAX OF REDEMPTIVE HISTORY WOULD REVOLVE AROUND THIS ISSUE.
WE'LL BE IN PS. 2 TODAY. IT'S A CORONATION PSALM FOR A KING.
Psalm 2 ESV
1 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying, 3 “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.” 4 He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. 5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, 6 “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.” 7 I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. 8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.” 10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
Think about all the legends of a great and wise king who ruled over a great kingdom and everything prospered. Then something happens, the king is gone, and we’re waiting for the return of the king. Robin Hood, Arthur and Camelot – the once and future king.
Why do we have these legends when the actual history of kings is so broken?
Why is it that in democracies where there is no king we create them?
WIL SMITH & CHRIS ROCK
We were built for a king. We were built to stand before and adore and serve and know and love a king.
You will find someone to worship/adore.

THERE IS A KING

PS. 2 REVOLVES AROUND THE REALITY OF A KING. GOD'S KING.
Psalm 2:6–9 ESV
6 “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.” 7 I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. 8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”
ANE CONTEXT OF KINGS AND GODS
BREAK/RULE AND DASH - HARSH LANGUAGE - WHY?
BECAUSE THERE IS A KING AND...

YOU ARE NOT THE KING

THERE IS A KING. YOU'RE NOT HIM.
YOU'RE NOT IN CHARGE. WORSE - THE TRUE KING IS IN CHARGE OF YOU.
WHICH LEADS TO THE REALITY THAT....

WE HATE THE KING

WE HATE THE KING.
WE HATE BEING OWNED.
WE HATE BEING RULED.
Psalm 2:1–3 ESV
1 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying, 3 “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.”
KINGS AND RULERS - THINK DIVINE COUNCIL WORLDVIEW - BABEL AND DEUT 32 THE NATIONS BEING TURNED OVER
BONDS AND CORDS REFERS TO THE WAY A YOKE OF A CART OR PLOW WAS PLACED ON AN ANIMALS NECK.
THE YOKE OF GOD'S KINGSHIP IS REJECTED.
“The central conviction of hell is: I am my own.” George Macdonald.
Genesis 3:5 : For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Glennon Doyle – Untamed – christian blogger left her husband for a lesbian relationship and she sees this not as a bad thing but as an epiphany. She writes: maybe eve was never meant to be our warning maybe she was meant to be our model. own your wanting. eat the apple.
DON'T LET YOURSELF OFF THE HOOK. WE HATE THE KING.
Romans 3:9–18 ESV
9 What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, 10 as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” 13 “Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.” 14 “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.” 15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 in their paths are ruin and misery, 17 and the way of peace they have not known.” 18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
THIS IS THE HUMAN CONDITION.
THIS IS THE SIN NATURE.
WE ARE ENEMIES OF GOD. CHILDREN OF WRATH.
REBELS WHO HAVE GONE AWOL.
BUT... THERE IS HOPE!
BACK TO PS.2 CONCLUSION:

WE NEED THE KING

Psalm 2:10–12 ESV
10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
SERVE THE KING.
REJOICE.
KISS THE SON.
THIS IS NOT THE LANGUAGE OF A BROKEN PEOPLE BUT OF LOVE AND RELATIONSHIP.
WE NEED A KING. WE NEED A YOKE.
Matthew 11:25–30 ESV
25 At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
THE CHOICE IS NOT A YOKE OR NO YOKE. THE CHOICE IS WHOSE YOKE.
JESUS IS FOR YOU! HIS YOKE BRINGS BLESSING...
BUT IT IS STILL A YOKE!
JESUS IS A KING AND A KING MUST BE OBEYED.
Matthew 16:24–27 ESV
24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.
AS KING JESUS WILL JUDGE BASED ON OUR SUBMISSION TO HIS RULE AND OUR SERVICE TO HIM.
LAST POINT: IF IT'S NOT CLEAR YET...

JESUS IS THE KING

PS. 2 POINTS TO A DESCENDANT OF DAVID WHO WILL BE THE KING OF KINGS.
THE EARLY CHURCH RECOGNIZED THIS FROM THE VERY BEGINNING.
Acts 4:23–31 ESV
23 When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, 25 who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit, “ ‘Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples plot in vain? 26 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed’— 27 for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28 to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place. 29 And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, 30 while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” 31 And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.
