INTRO
Good morning, friends, we’re so glad you have tuned in to hear God’s Precepts and Promises this morning brought to you by the Rome Church of Christ.
Gospel meeting
We’re examining Christianity systematically--taking all the Bible has to say on a subject and putting it together as best as possible.
Letting the Bible speak
Crucifixion of Christ would not have been viewed as “wondrous” but Isaac Watts wrote:
When I survey the wondrous Cross,
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.
If you were surveying that scene, you would have held the crucified one in contempt and that one’s loss (1 Cor 1:23).
Nothing glorious (Mt 27:22, 26, 28, 29, 30, 31, 33-35, 39-45, 50)
But we sing “when I survey the wondrous cross...”
Looking back, when we survey the cross, what do we see?Discussion
INTRO
Cicero: “the cruelest and most terrible punishment”
Josephus: “the most pitiable of deaths” (Both in LBD)
Gospel writers do not explain what was involved in crucifying one; it was a common occurence under Roman rule.
DISCUSSION
I see the deadly seriousness of sin (Rom 6:23; Gen 2:17)
I see the demonstration of God’s love (Jn 3:16; Rom 5:8; Jn 10:18)
I see the justice of God (Rom 3:24-26)
Unfair--he was innocent (Mt 27:17-23)
Mankind was not innocent and needed a perfect substitute--vicarious death of Christ (Is 53:4-6, 10-11)
I see the degree of obedience required (Heb 5:8-9; Phil 2:8-9)
