Sheep and Goats

Matthew 25:31–46 ESV
“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
Sheep and Goats
Matthew 25:31–33 ESV
“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left.
Why is Jesus using the reference of Sheep and Goats?
I learn something new every day, and I didnt realize this. But Sheep and goats would move together in one accord. There is something out there called the fainting goat.
What happens is in when a predator comes the goat faints to be taken by the predator and leave everyone alone.
Now you say ok Erich, why bring us this when we are not sheep and goat.
Well metaphorically we are.
Because in here today, we have sheep and goat. We have people that say they Love the Lord and they truly believe but then we have people here that say the love the Lord but dont walk what is in scripture.
Talk the Talk and Walk the Walk
Now I dont know who that is in here. Nor is it my place to judge but what I do want to make clear, is the Gospel is not a feel good Gospel all the time. If you dont feel some sort of something whether its happiness, or disappointment. (we will all disappoint God one day but He still Loves us no matter what) then we are reading this book like we would read any other book we have.
But now he brings us in all together and then separates us. Sheep and Goats run together in this passage.
Im not talking Saved and Unsaved, I am talking about Saved and pretending to be Saved.
Saved and pretending to be Saved
So Let’s look closer at the sheep.
Matthew 25:34–36 ESV
Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’
He says to the believers the ones who truly believed
Come
Come, inherit the kingdom that was prepared for you.
You may have nothing on this earth, physically, material things, or whatever. But if you truly believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, you will be richer than the richest person on this Earth.
Jesus is also saying the reason why we inherit, I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was these things and more and YOU helped me.
Matthew 25:37–39 ESV
Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’
But now these people are sitting there, and they are turning to each other and going when did I give food, water and clothes to Jesus, I can’t see Him.
They are saying I dont remember any of this and how does the Lord respond back
Matthew 25:40 ESV
And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
If you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.
Now every day I am not saying to give up your food, drink, and clothes to someone. But if you ever have the opportunity that God has placed in your life, you need to think about this scripture right here.
Saved and Good Works
But wait a minute, Erich, are you saying that if I just say the Sinner’s Prayer and I believe, I still have to do Good Works to get into Heaven.
Good Works does not only get you to Heaven, you can be the most generous, nicest person out there but if you don’t truly believe with all your heart that Jesus came down to Earth, Died on the Cross, Resurrected 3 days later and he is coming back again. You will not get to heaven until you believe whole-heartedly.
Where’s your heart at?
Now let’s look at the goats, we havent forgotten about them yet.
Matthew 25:41–43 ESV
“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’
They question just like the sheep.
Matthew 25:44 ESV
Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’
They will continue to ask, when did I not do this. I talked the talk every day. I went to Church every Sunday
Sunday Card
I did my time. I did what I supposed to do.
You can’t say I go to church, that’s good enough. I pray to God, well I pray to Him to bless me and curse Him when something bad happens to me. I tell people I pray for them but then I don’t. I know John 3:16 doesn’t that mean something.
Matthew 25:45–46 ESV
Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
Jesus is saying this. You remember that guy that was on the corner asking for money and you said you know what he will just buy beer with it. But this guy lost his job due to budget cuts, He has a wife and 2 small children at home. In fact he doesn’t know how he will be able to afford the next meal that they eat when all they had was bread and water to eat the night before. But you said I don’t want to help him.
Or what about the guy that walked into this church, with ripped jeans, ripped shirt, doesnt look like he showered for days. He wearing his hat in church his hair is in knots and and beard not trimmed. But you are over there talking to people that you have sat with for years saying “Who does he think he is?” Well he hasnt been in church for years and he is ready to make a change in his life. But then he over hears this.
HE is a part of the sheep and you who sit there and judge him are part of the goats.
Or you get a different boss, and he/or she has different ideas to better the business, and it doesnt go with your ideas. Sitting there saying things like “IF the old leader was here, this would’ve never happened”
Change is not always bad, Change is what we needed and God saw we needed it when He sent His Son here for us. Jesus didnt look like the Pharisees, Jesus didnt put himself on a pedestal and say “See what I did” Jesus SPOKE TRUTH. JESUS SHOWED LOVE to the people that even the pharisees would come near. We need to be more like HIM.
So today I ask you which side are you.
Are you a sheep or are you a Goat?
You need to decide soon because HE is coming back again.
Tomorrow is not promised.
Make the change.
