Jesus is Sending A Helper

Jesus says that He will ask the Father to send a Helper. The word for Helper is parakletos. It means to come along side. Just as Jesus was beside the disciples during his ministry on earth, He was sending the Holy Spirit to be beside believers. The natural question is why do we need a helper. For the same reason the disciples did. The purpose and calling for all of our lives goes beyond our natural ability to complete it. We must have help.
Jesus purpose for the apostles was to start the first century church so that all future generations would be privileged to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Obviously the apostles could not do this on their own. They needed the help of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:1-12
Acts 2:1–12 NASB95
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance. Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven. And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language. They were amazed and astonished, saying, “Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans? “And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born? “Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya around Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God.” And they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”
We see here that the Holy Spirit enabled the disciples to speak in languages that they did not know. They did not have the mental or physical ability to speak in other languages. The Holy Spirit enabled them to do this.
This is important because people from all over the world were in Jerusalem during Pentecost. When they heard the gospel in their own language they were astonished and moved. I am sure they return to their country of origin and shared with others the gospel that they had heard in their own language.
The disciples did not know how to or ever think that they would be used in the capacity for which they were used. It was they Holy Spirit that came along side of them to accomplish the mission of Christ.

The Holy Spirit Helps us today

Jesus mission is not over. He still has people to save and disciples to make. We are the conduit to affect His mission. Just as the disciples did not have the power to do it o their own, neither do we. We too must depend on the Holy Spirit to enable us to carry out the mission of Christ.
I will give you an example how the Holy Spirit often helps me. I am not very good at Scripture memorization. However, when I am sharing the Gospel with someone, He enables me to remember the scriptures so I can share with the one who needs to hear the gospel. There are other times when people are seeking counsel and the Holy Spirit calls to my mind scripture that can help that person. I do not have the ability to memorize scripture so the Holy Spirit brings it to my mind when I need it to fulfill His purpose.
This is only one example of how the Holy Spirit helps us today. There are many other ways that He helps us to carry on the mission of Christ.

Spirit of Truth

The Holy Spirit is part of the triune Godhead, so He cannot lie. He can only speak truth. Every word He says are the words of God because He is God. He does not speak to us in audible words but instead by passions and emotions of the heart.
Jesus says that the world cannot receive him because they do not see him but we know Him because He abides within us.
The way the Holy Spirit helped the Apostles was to indwell them so that they could write scripture.
2 Timothy 3:16–17 NASB95
All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
2 Peter 1:20–21 NASB95
But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
The Holy Spirit inspired men to write scripture. The words written are the very words of God.

The Holy Spirit Helps Us Interpret Truth

There are a lot of lies that the world tells us. All you have to do is watch the news or get on social media and you will be inundated with lies. We are often told lies by our friends and others when we face difficulties.
The way the Holy Spirit speaks truth to us today is how to apply the Word of God to our lives and situations. There is nothing that you will face that the Bible does not address. We must seek the scriptures for the Truth and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal it to us. He will do this then we must obey the application that He reveals.
But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives He will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control’ (Galatians 5:16-17 & 23 TLB). Is living like this really possible? Yes, but you must do four things:
1) understand that you’re a target for the enemy and protect yourself with God’s Word and prayer
2) get angry with sin - don’t put up with it: ’...let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles...’ (Hebrews 12:1 NIV)
3) be continually filled with the Holy Spirit. Without it, you lose every time
4) stand in God’s strength, not your own. How? By exercising your choice to obey Him rather than going for the easy option
All believers have God in their heart - but not all believers have given their whole heart to God! The question is not, ’how can I have more of the Holy Spirit?’ It’s ’how can the Spirit have more of me?’
Richard Francis

Holy Spirit Discloses Jesus to Us.

The Holy Spirit Reveals that Jesus is our Savior. He convicts our hearts of sin. He reveals to us that Jesus death, burial, and resurrection is what God did so that we could be saved. He reveals salvation in Christ alone by faith alone.
Not only does the Holy Spirit reveal salvation in Christ, but also purpose in Christ. He transforms our minds and our beings to be representatives of Christ to a lost and dying world. People see Christ in us as the Holy Spirit transforms us.
Romans 12:1–2 NASB95
Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
The Holy Spirit transforms our minds to line up with the principles of the kingdom of heaven. I used to believe in every thing that was opposed to the word of God before I knew Jesus. I believed in abortion, homosexuality, racism, sexual immorality and many more things that are contrary to scripture. As a matter of fact I hated church people because I thought they were legalistic and arrogant.
When I came to know Jesus through the Holy Spirit all of this changed. He changed my heart and mind to hate these things rather than be proponents for them. This is not something I could have done on my own but it was the power of the Holy Spirit to change my mind.

Holy Spirit Changes our Character

The Holy Spirit cause us to exhibit the fruits of the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-25
Galatians 5:22–25 NASB95
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.
So we see here that the Holy Spirit removes the passions of the flesh and replaces them with the fruits of the Spirit.
How can a person tell if they are saved? Are the things of the flesh being replaced with the fruits of the Spirit? This is how you can tell
Matthew 7:15–20 NASB95
“Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. “You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? “So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. “A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. “Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. “So then, you will know them by their fruits.
