Read John 8:25-36

John 8:25–36 NASB95
25 So they were saying to Him, “Who are You?” Jesus said to them, “What have I been saying to you from the beginning? 26 “I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world.” 27 They did not realize that He had been speaking to them about the Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me. 29 “And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.” 30 As He spoke these things, many came to believe in Him. 31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” 33 They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. 35 “The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. 36 “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

Lets break this down.

Jesus did not pull any punches, He was not liked for the things that he said.
He did not take the sensitive approach
People say all the time, that preachers are wrong because they preach fire and brimstone,
The say preachers are wrong because they are so judgmental.
So people like to listen to someone like Joel Osteen because he makes them feel good.
But Jesus was never a preacher that was out there to make you feel good.
He was a preacher that told the truth
and the truth was that if these people, these Jewish elites will die in there sins if they don't believe in, trust in, become dependent on Jesus

V. 25-26

John 8:25 NASB95
25 So they were saying to Him, “Who are You?” Jesus said to them, “What have I been saying to you from the beginning?
So after Jesus talks about the Father being a witness to Himself, and saying that the Jews will die in there sins if they don’t believe.
You would like that this would be another Salah moment. A moment of refection, and moment to meditate
But instead thee men had more questions.
They ask who are you.
Again.
Again??????to to
But in the Greek they are saying to Him, “Who do you think you are?”
Jesus answer is simple.
He has been saying the same thing since day one. Jesus said that He was the:
1. Bread of Life
2. The Light of the World
3. Ego Emmi (I Am)
He is God
He is saying, “I've told you from the beginning. Or it can also be read as; I’ve been telling you from the beginning
John 8:26–27 NASB95
26 “I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world.” 27 They did not realize that He had been speaking to them about the Father.
Jesus is sharing here that He has the right to judge and to speak of things about them, but His relationship and moving with the Father, Jesus will stay to course. The mission.
We know that father, Son and Holy Spirit do nothing apart.
Jesus is sharing here that He has a lot to talk about with them and there sin, but there is a bigger pitcure.
Judgement will happen. but not yet

V. 28-29

John 8:28–29 NASB95
28 So Jesus said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me. 29 “And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.”
Lifted Up - what does Jesus mean when He said “When you lift up the Son of man”?
Lets remember John 3:14
John 3:14 NASB95
14 “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up;
Numbers 21:9 NASB95
9 And Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on the standard; and it came about, that if a serpent bit any man, when he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived.
Jesus tells that they when when he is lifted up as a representation of sin, then they will know that His is....
Remember in Matthew 27:54
Matthew 27:54 NASB95
54 Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”

V.30-32

John 8:30–32 NASB95
30 As He spoke these things, many came to believe in Him. 31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
What truth??????
“The Truth shell set you free!!!!”
a misused statement
We hear this statement all the time
But what truth are we talking about?
its good to tell the truth, there is freedom to telling the truth, but this is not the truth that Jesus is talking about.
Jesus tells the believers that if the stay in Him, hearing his Word you will know the truth and that Truth that is in in Him will set you free.
Freedom is in Christ.

V. 33

John 8:33 NASB95
33 They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?”
The Jews that believed in Jesus, did not understand. They were not enslaved to anyone.
‘but of course they had been enslaved / Egypt, Babylon, currently to the Romans
the Jews see themselves as spiritually free,
So Jesus decided to elaborate, they were not free but enslave to sin.

True believers

V. 34-35

John 8:34–35 NASB95
34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. 35 “The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever.
Jesus explains that those who sin, are slaves to sin.
‘Jesus is saying that they are not sons but slaves
We are all slave to sin.
remember the Adulterous woman
Jesus tells the men that those who are without sin, that are free from sin’s chains, throw the stone at her.
John 8:35 NAS
“The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever.
Jesus shares here that the slave does not remain in the house.
back then….. slaves were temporary, they work a debt and after they leave

V. 36

John 8:36 NASB95
36 “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
So when Jesus makes you free. you are free
how can one be free from sin?
Through Jesus alone.
To be free from sin
To be in Christ means to be free. Free from sin.
