Let’s Pray!

We are going to continue our series in Romans with Chapter 4 today. As we have said through this entire journey this Letter Written by Paul to the Church in Romans is Paul’s exposition of the Gospel and what it means to be saved.
Today’s message is titled Justified by Faith.
I believe this section is going to change a few lives today. It is going to speak directly to three types of people both in the church and in the world.

1. Heaven through Works.

Just about anyone you ask will tell you they believe in God.
Just about everyone you ask believe they are going to heaven.
But when you ask one question the answer tells you everything.
Why do you think you are going. Then comes the list.

2. God only loves me when I preform well.

Roller Coaster/I messed Up

3. Jesus forgave me of my sin.

These are the sinners prayer only folks.
When it comes to Righteousness there is a fork in the road that commonly leads to a two paths.
The first is a path where it is all about working for your salvation. Trying do good, trying to be good, trying to look good, This path is muddy, and ends up leading to this place where the person on it is buried up to their neck in the inability to do anything right.
The other path is on where the Works is a Response to my Salvation. Because of my salvation I want to be good, I want to be more loving, I want to clean up my life.
The problem is many believers only have a partial view of Salvation.
Let me break Salvation down for you in a way that makes it more understandable.
Salvation is a Three Step Process.
Justification> Sanctification> Glorification
Past> Present > Future
Step 1: Christ forgives me of my past!
Step 2: Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, God cleans up my present.
Step 3: When we step into Heaven the fullness of salvation is placed on us and and we are presented in our glorified bodies.
Salvation is a process.
Today we are going to begin with step one of the process.
Justification
What is Justification?

Justification is the act of God Whereby He forgives the sin of an unsaved person and credits/assigns to them the righteousness of Christ when through faith they believe.

Romans Chapter 1-3 taught us that All have Sinned and Fallen Short of the Glory of God. No one is righteous Not Even One........... Man is Guilty.
We are eternal beings what this means is that we don’t end, our souls go on and on and on.
If we have all fallen short and are guilty that mean without some sort of intervention our eternal reward is punishment.
But God...............
Rich in Mercy,
John 3:16–17 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Somebody get excited for Jesus this morning.
In Jesus Comes Justification.
Guess what. There are three components to Justification.

The Three components of Justification

1. God forgives you of your sin.

We are all sinners. Sinners from Birth, You don’t learn how to that way. Haven’t we all heard that I was born this way.
I was born this way, I have lived this way, and if I don’t find another way, I am going to spend eternity this way.
When I walk into God’s presence I walk in spiritually Bankrupt. I have nothing to my name. I have spent it all.
When God Forgives me comes the second component.

2. God credits, assigns, inputs Christ’s Righteousness into my account.

Isaiah 64:6 ESV
6 We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
You see I came into this thing bankrupt and God not only covered my debt: Filled my account with Jesus’ righteousness.
Isaiah 61:10 ESV
10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
Then comes the 3rd component of my Justification.

3. The only way to receive justification is through faith.

What is Faith?

John Lindell uses this Acrostic.
Faith
Facts:
Agree:
Individualize:
Trust :
Hope:
Faith
Facts: No one is Righteous Not One: All have fallen short: All Deserve Punishment.
Agree: I agree with all those facts: I agree that mankind is terrible.
Individualize: I realize that I am unrighteous: fallen short individual, lost and without hope.
Trust: I put my trust in Jesus’ ability to save me, I trust that he died and rose on to live on the third day, and make choice to start following him.
Hope: I begin to have hope that if I follow Jesus’ ways my life and eternity will be better. Hope is taking steps to grow closer to God.
Now let’s dive into today’s passage.
Paul is going to make a case that the through out the history of man the only path to justification was through faith. He is going to do that by going Old Testament. By using two of the greatest heroes of the Old Testament. Abraham the father of our faith and King David.
Romans 4:1 ESV
1 What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh?
What did Abraham by his own ability learn about walking with God.
Romans 4:2 ESV
2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.
This is to say if anybody in the Bible had reason to Boast it would be Abraham. This guy was a works, worker. The spiritually prideful jew would say look at Abraham. He left his family, he almost sacrificed Issac, This guys relationship with God and obedience to what God said was on point.
But Paul kills this line of thinking.
Romans 4:2 ESV
2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.
There is no boasting before God, Abraham was not so good at works that all of a sudden God was in his debt… God Owed him something.
Special status doesn’t come through checking off a list. It comes through faith.
Romans Abraham Was Justified by Faith / 4:1-25

It is like the proffered hand of a drowning man that makes it possible for the lifeguard to save him. There is nothing meritorious in the act of a drowning man stretching out his hand in order to be saved. It is the efficient medium through which he is saved. Thus, the act of faith on the sinner’s part is not meritorious but only the efficient medium through which God is able to save him.

—Kenneth Wuest

Romans 4:3 ESV
3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.”
Abraham believed and God credited/assigned Righteousness.
Paul recounting the story of God’s Covenant with Abraham written in Genesis 15. The things you learn when you study scripture.
A Covenant to give him an heir, for his descendents to out number the stars, and that they would inhabit a land ruled by 7 nations much stronger than Abraham.
Abraham is no different than any of us. The Yeah but I will I know your going to do all this.
In that day a if a stronger king conquered a weaker king...................................... Cut animals in half
So God tells Abraham to get a heifer, a ram and a turtle dove, and a pigeon.
Prepare the sacrifice...............Instead of Abraham walking through the blood God does.
God is telling Abraham I am making a covenant that is not dependent on you it is dependent on me.
The word says that God puts Abraham into a deep sleep and he has a vision. I believe that God gave Abraham insight into the His ultimate plan for redemption.
Jesus talking to the Jewish leaders says this in John 8:56
John 8:56 ESV
56 Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.”
Abraham responded to what he say and believed............When he believed it was bestowed on him as righteousness.
It was a gift.
Romans 4:4 ESV
4 Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due.
Your paid to work it is not a gift.
Romans 4:5 ESV
5 And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness,
Your not given righteousness by work it is by faith.
But isn’t believing work? i have to work at my faith right?
Ephesians 2:8 ESV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
Faith and Grace are a gift put in us by God
Romans 3:10–11 ESV
10 as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God.

Justification is the act of God Whereby He forgives the unsaved persons sin and credits/assigns to them the righteousness of Christ when through faith they believe.

Romans 4:6 ESV
6 just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:
Romans 4:7 ESV
7 “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered;
Romans 4:8 ESV
8 blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.”
I want to Read this another way for you this morning.
Romans 4:6 ESV
6 just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:
Romans 4:7 NLT
7 “Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sins are put out of sight.
Romans 4:8 NLT
8 Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of sin.”

Justification is the act of God Whereby He forgives the unsaved persons sin and credits/assigns to them the righteousness of Christ when through faith they believe.
