Romans 1:24-32
Beginning in verse 18, we have the firs doctrinal portion of the book of Romans.
That is the doctrine of Condemnation - 1:18-3:20
Paul is telling us that the world is lost in condemnation because man is guilty before God.
He makes it clear, as we saw last week, that the world is without excuse.
Because of their own conscience that God has put inside of every man declares that there is a God;
And because all of Creation declares that there is a God.
So then we must be accountable to this creating God.
Man then takes a series of steps downward away from God:
Indifference - refuse to glorify Him
Ingratitude - are unthankful for life and all that God has given
Ignorance - think they are wise while in their own foolishness declare themselves to be wise.
Idolatry - Make themselves, or other created being a god
Now in verse 24, Paul says, “Wherefore...”
Because they refuse, and wallow in their arrogancy,…wherefore God gave them up...
vs. 24 - God also gave them up...
vs. 26 - God gave them up...
Vs. 28 - God gave them over...
What has God given them over too?
I. To Sexual Immorality
24-25
One of the first signs we see after man rebels is sexual immorality.
Last Mother’s day I preached on the Slippery slope of family relationships.
It starts with

Alienation of Affection - Ungrateful - Compare
Rejection of Authority - Stubbornness - Nag
Self as Authority - Rebellion - Restrict Privileges
Sympathetic Companions - wrong friends - Investigate
Sins of the Flesh - Defense of Sensuality - Condemn or Condone
Guilt - Condemning Others - Defend Self
Thoughts of Suicide - Frivolity/Depression - Frustrated/Grieved
Here we see once they have begun their rebellion, man goes into sexual sin.
And it begins with the...
A. Desire
24a
Unchecked desire that is.
God gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts.
lusts - desire greatly
When someone gives in to continuing in lust, it never stops there!
I've learned that if you give a pig and a boy everything they want, you'll get a good pig and a bad boy.
If he gave them over to lust, that means they have been lusting for a while.
A thought of desire, even sinful desire, is not sin in and of itself.
It is what you do with that desire that determines if it is sin.
Do you push it away, and replace it with what is right?
Or Do you dwell in that thought, then it becomes lust.
It begins with the desire, then it moves to...
B. Dishonor
24b
The Bible says they dishonor their own bodies between themselves.
Now they have crossed over from mental adultery to physical adultery.
Now they are dishonoring their bodies themselves.
But it doesn’t stop there...
C. Denial
Vs. 25
They change the truth of God into a lie
Defense of Sensuality
They worship the creature (their own bodies, their own desires) more than the Creator.
God will not share his love with anyone.
and It just gets worse and worse.
Once they have given themselves over to Sexual immorality, if left unchecked, they will want more and more…many times leading them to being given over ...
II.
To Shameful Homosexuality
26-27
A. It Is Shameful
The Bible says that God gives them up unto vile affections.
Literally meaning shameful passions.
They think thoughts that they would be ashamed if anyone knew what they were.
Thoughts that they have to keep in the closet.
B. It is Unnatural
Twice the Bible describes the act as being unnatural.
God created man and woman different and distinct for a purpose.
Anything outside of God’s plan is always unnatural and sinful.
The world can change terminology, they can cry bigotry, they can try to brain wash all of society, but the truth is the act of homosexuality is a sin.
They try to tell us that 10% of the Americans were born this way, but recent polls tell us otherwise - disregarding the “born this way” part, only 2.9% identify themselves as lesbian, gay or bisexual.
And yet such a large percentage of tv shows and movies must include a gay or lesbian characters.
However, it is amazing to me that this is one of the only sins that permanently labels a person.
I think maybe it is because we have believed the lie ourselves.
A person is not a homosexual, they are a sinner who has committed homosexuality.
Many have read into the wording of these verses where it says that God gave them over…to mean that there is no hope for them.
I disagree, I have known a people who have repented from that sin.
Yes, it is shameful, yes it is unnatural, yes God gave them over to that sin, but that doesn’t mean it is unrepentable.
If those words meant that, then it would be true for the person who had heterosexual sex outside of marriage as well, or even dwelt in that lust…because the Bible says that God gave them up to that uncleanness first.
God loves people, the entire world, but God hates sin.
He hates what sin does to people.
And he knows that it doesn’t stop with a sin, but that sin leads to hardened heart and spiritual suicide.
They say love is love or they say love wins - in such they equate the act, or sin with love.
But sex is not love
sex was created by God as an expression of love within the confines of His boundaries.
Some have said, who is He to create boundaries
Well…He is God, the one who created you…He has the right to set the boundaries.
Thou shalt not kill
Thou shalt not commit adultery
etc.
The thing is whether it is hetero or homo sexuality if it is outside the confines of His boundaries - inside marriage between a biological male and a biological female - it is sin.
And it will lead to further sin.
Which leads to the third thing that God gave them over...
III.
To Saturated Depravity
28-32
The Bible says even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge
They did not acknowledge God any longer
They have despised the instruction that God gave them through their conscience, so they are fools.
