Series: God’s People Seeking Revival
Title: Praying for Revival
Text: Psalm 81
Date: March 11 & 18, 2015
Introduction:
Growing in grace means the Christian is allowing God to direct his daily decisions.
Revival happens when a believer begins to view his life, actions, attitudes, relationships the same way that God does.
We will never have a God sent revival without having a God seeking repentance.
God desires that His people live and function by His power and direction.

I. Remember His Power

Vs. 10-“I am the Lord…which brought thee”

A. Creator

B. Deliverer-see verses 5-9

C. Saviour

II. Return to my active prayer life

Vs. 10- “open thy mouth wide”
Note-the thought of a baby bird waiting on the parent to fill its mouth. Doesn’t open its mouth just a little, but all the way open.

A. Open my mouth in adoration/praise of His character/attributes: pause and then pray

See verses 1-3
Worship God for Who He is: gracious, merciful, kind, longsuffering, Holy, etc.

B. Open my mouth in confession/reflection/repentance: pause and then pray

Psalms 66:18
18- If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:
Isaiah 55:7
7- Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

C. Open my mouth in thanksgiving/specific: pause and then pray

D. Open my mouth in supplication/seeking the needs of others and myself. Pause and then pray.

Many of the New Testament epistles contain an illustration of praying for others, and most also contain an admonition to prayer for others.

III. Realize His Promises

Vs. 10- “and I will fill it”

A. Based on my obedience

Note- One cannot begin a relationship with God without obedience, therefore one cannot continue without obedience. See Hebrews 5:9
Hebrews 5:9 KJV 1900
9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
Note-This obedience is not a response to the iron-fisted demands of God, but rather a willing surrender of the heart of the believer in direct response to the consistent love of his Heavenly Father.
“Child of God, the first and the last thing your God asks of you is simple, universal, unchanging obedience.”
Murray, Andrew (2004-04-01). A Life of Obedience (p. 11). Baker Publishing Group. Kindle Edition.
“The one thing God asked of Adam in the Garden was obedience. The one thing by which a creature can glorify God or enjoy His favor and blessing is obedience. The single cause of the power of sin in the world and the ruin it has caused is disobedience.”
Murray, Andrew (2004-04-01). A Life of Obedience (p. 24). Baker Publishing Group. Kindle Edition.
John 15:7
7- If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
Note-obedience is learned:
Hebrews 5:8-9
8- Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
9- And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
Jesus Christ learned obedience to the leading of His Father by intimately walking with Him in consistent prayer.
“The secret of true obedience, then, is the return to close and continual fellowship with God.”

B. Based on His mercy

Hebrews 4:16
16- Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

C. Based on His grace

2 Corinthians 12:8-10
8- For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
9- And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
10- Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

D. Promises of God are realized by the believer that is allowing his life to be led by the Spirit of God on a minute by minute basis.

Conclusion:
Revival will never happen on a corporate level until it begins to happen on a personal level.
How is your life based on the life that God wants you to be living?
Are there changes that need to be made?
Are you willing to let God make the needed changes?
Are you willing to ask God for direction in your life?
