Good Psalm to give us an example of how to have a testimony service on Sunday afternoon

The last three psalms of Book V form a fitting closure:

Psalm 104 focused on the LORD the creator,

Psalm 105 emphasizes his redemption of Israel from bondage

Psalm 106 provides a sorrowful memory of the events.

The LORD must be praised for his mighty works and his faithfulness to his word (1–11)

How are we to worship the Lord?

Psalm 105:1–6 (KJV 1900)

1 O give thanks unto the Lord; call upon his name: Make known his deeds among the people.

2 Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: Talk ye of all his wondrous works.

3 Glory ye in his holy name: Let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord.

4 Seek the Lord, and his strength: Seek his face evermore.

5 Remember his marvellous works that he hath done; His wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;

6 O ye seed of Abraham his servant, Ye children of Jacob his chosen.

Give thanks unto the Lord

We come with hearts of gratitude.

This is the day the Lord hath made.. lets be glad and rejoice in it.

Do not miss out on today by longing for the past or obsessing over the future.

Call upon His name

This is an expression for the people of God gathering together to worship Him

First mention Genesis 4:26 “26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the Lord.”

Seen as a contast between Cain and Seth’s kids.

Descendants of Cain began to

practice herding (verse 20)

music production (verse 21),

working with metals (verse 22).

At the same time, the world was becoming more and more wicked

Seth’s descendants stood out from their corrupt society in that they began to call on the name of the Lord.

Friend this week accidentally sent out an email to everyone who had visited his church in the last 5 years. Summary: Time to get back to church.

The psalmist is saying one mark of true worship is you really want to be with the people of God, and you really want to be worshiping.

This would explain the language that speaks about forsaking the assembly as in contrast to “make sure you faithfully attend”

Make known His deeds among the people

The act of missions is an act of worship.

The act of sharing the gospel is an act of worship

Genesis 12:3 “3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”

Sing unto him

Those who know God will want to sing to Him.

Why? Because singing brings together truth and our hearts. It brings together truth and experience.

When those around you don’t sing. Do not judge them. Pray for them. Reach out for them. Inquire.

Come, We that Love the Lord. The second line says, “Let those refuse to sing who never knew our God.”

Pastor at Bellevue Baptist stepped up at the men’s conference in between worship songs and said, “Some of you men haven’t sung a lick! What’s wrong? Jesus not glorious enough for you?”

Talk of His wondrous works.

When we get done singing, listening, let’s keep talking about His wondrous works.

What has God done in your life recently?

If we were at camp with teens and not here I would stop and have you do this. If we can’t do that here we won’t do that out there.

Glory ye in His holy name

Treasure God and to delight in Him,

God should not have to share the platform with anyone. Isaiah 42:8 I am the Lord: that is my name: And my glory will I not give to another, Neither my praise to graven images.

Let your heart rejoice as you seek the Lord

God is worship as we are content in Him

Worship is a matter of the heart. Worship should cause the heart to rejoice.

Seek the Lord; his strength and face

We should go to the Lord in prayer.

Set your heart and soul and seek. 1 Chronicles 22:19 “Now set your heart and your soul to seek the Lord your God..”

This should be a house of prayer because it is the meeting place of a people of prayer. Mark 11:17 And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves.

We are not meeting in the temple but we are meeting of people who should love time in prayer.

Remember His marvellous works

Remembering is a powerful in meditating on the goodness of God.

Do any of you have that friend who always starts things with “You remember that time when we...” My friend was Clint and he would start the next day.

Praising God for His faithfulness to His Word v.7-11

Psalm 105:7–11 (KJV 1900)

7 He is the Lord our God: His judgments are in all the earth.

8 He hath remembered his covenant for ever, The word which he commanded to a thousand generations.

9 Which covenant he made with Abraham, And his oath unto Isaac;

10 And confirmed the same unto Jacob for a law, And to Israel for an everlasting covenant:

11 Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, The lot of your inheritance:

Taught to look for how often I use “I” to start a sentence.

God is the one who fulfills His promises. When we tell our story we should speak of His faithfulness

Psalm 105:8 He hath remembered his covenant for ever, The word which he commanded to a thousand generations.

Psalm 105:9 Which covenant he made with Abraham, And his oath unto Isaac;

Psalm 105:10 And (He) confirmed the same unto Jacob for a law, And to Israel for an everlasting covenant:

Psalm 105:14 He suffered no man to do them wrong: Yea, he reproved kings for their sakes;

Psalm 105:16 Moreover he called for a famine upon the land: He brake the whole staff of bread.

Psalm 105:25 He turned their heart to hate his people, To deal subtilly with his servants.

Psalm 105:26 He sent Moses his servant; And Aaron whom he had chosen.

Psalm 105:28 He sent darkness, and made it dark; And they rebelled not against his word.

Psalm 105:29 He turned their waters into blood, And slew their fish.

Psalm 105:32 He gave them hail for rain, And flaming fire in their land.

Psalm 105:33 He smote their vines also and their fig trees; And brake the trees of their coasts.

Psalm 105:34 He spake, and the locusts came, And caterpillers, and that without number

Psalm 105:36 He smote also all the firstborn in their land, The chief of all their strength.

Psalm 105:37 He brought them forth also with silver and gold: And there was not one feeble person among their tribes.

Psalm 105:39 He spread a cloud for a covering; And fire to give light in the night.

Psalm 105:41 He opened the rock, and the waters gushed out; They ran in the dry places like a river.

Psalm 105:42 For he remembered his holy promise, And Abraham his servant.

Psalm 105:43 And he brought forth his people with joy, And his chosen with gladness:

Our story is the story of God remembering His promises

It is good to remember God protection and deliverance

God has provided protection of his people (12–15)

Psalm 105:12-15 12 When they were but a few men in number; Yea, very few, and strangers in it. 13 When they went from one nation to another, From one kingdom to another people; 14 He suffered no man to do them wrong: Yea, he reproved kings for their sakes; 15 Saying, Touch not mine anointed, And do my prophets no harm.”

God has provided for our deliverance (16–23)

Psalm 105:16-23 16 Moreover he called for a famine upon the land: He brake the whole staff of bread. 17 He sent a man before them, Even Joseph, who was sold for a servant: 18 Whose feet they hurt with fetters: He was laid in iron: 19 Until the time that his word came: The word of the Lord tried him. 20 The king sent and loosed him; Even the ruler of the people, and let him go free. 21 He made him lord of his house, And ruler of all his substance: 22 To bind his princes at his pleasure; And teach his senators wisdom. 23 Israel also came into Egypt; And Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.

It is good to remember God’s blessing on his people and his judgments on their oppressors

Remember his blessings for his people

These were people who were helpless.

They were in captivity and would have stayed there if God did not intervene.

Psalm 105:24-25 And he increased his people greatly; And made them stronger than their enemies. 25 He turned their heart to hate his people, To deal subtilly with his servants.

Remember his judgment on oppressors

Psalm 105:26-36 He sent Moses his servant; And Aaron whom he had chosen. 27 They shewed his signs among them, And wonders in the land of Ham. 28 He sent darkness, and made it dark; And they (Moses and Aaron) rebelled not against his word. 29 He turned their waters into blood, And slew their fish. 30 Their land brought forth frogs in abundance, In the chambers of their kings. 31 He spake, and there came divers sorts of flies, And lice in all their coasts. 32 He gave them hail for rain, And flaming fire in their land. 33 He smote their vines also and their fig trees; And brake the trees of their coasts. 34 He spake, and the locusts came, And caterpillers, and that without number, 35 And did eat up all the herbs in their land, And devoured the fruit of their ground. 36 He smote also all the firstborn in their land, The chief of all their strength.

It is good to remember God redeemed His people, providing for them, and brought them into the land

He delivers his people from bondage

Psalm 105:37-38 He brought them forth also with silver and gold: And there was not one feeble person among their tribes. 38 Egypt was glad when they departed: For the fear of them fell upon them.

God brought them out with treasures.

Not a single one of them wasn’t able to leave.

Egypt was glad they departed.

“See the contrast between Egypt and Israel – in Egypt one dead in every house, and among the Israelites not one so much as limping.” (Spurgeon)

He provides for them in the way (39–41)

Psalm 105:39-41 He spread a cloud for a covering; And fire to give light in the night. 40 The people asked, and he brought quails, And satisfied them with the bread of heaven. 41 He opened the rock, and the waters gushed out; They ran in the dry places like a river.

Often forgotten in the shadow of the parting of the Red Seas

God gave Israel the protection of a cloud by day. He also provided fire to give them light in the night

People asked and he provided quails, manna, and fresh water.

He brings them to their promised inheritance so that they would keep his word (42–45)

Psalm 105:42-45 For he remembered his holy promise, And Abraham his servant. 43 And he brought forth his people with joy, And his chosen with gladness: 44 And gave them the lands of the heathen: And they inherited the labour of the people; 45 That they might observe his statutes, And keep his laws. Praise ye the Lord.

God can bring you on your journey with joy and gladness.

If you don’t have it on your journey consider the presence of God and not just the path.

Gave them the lands and labor of the people. All provided a head of time.

“By right of conquest they freely inherited from the Canaanites cities, vineyards, orchards, cisterns, and all kinds of material benefits.” (VanGemeren)

Friend in California outgrew building. God allowed them to buy the mormon ward nearby.

Conclusion

After remembering all God has done on behalf of the people a reasonable question is WHY?

45 That they might observe his statutes, And keep his laws. Praise ye the Lord.

Psalm 105 ends just as the previous psalm, with the Hebrew word Hallelujah. It is right and worthy for God’s people to remember His marvelous works and to praise Him for all He has done.
