Theme: Moses anoints Aaron and his sons as priests It’s surreal. That an extraordinary priesthood could be made up of ordinary people. How we as ordinary people are invited into Jesus royal priesthood. He anoints our ears with His Word, our hands with His compassionate power and our feet with His mission.

Ordinarily Extraordinary (Lev. 8) Old Made New: Pt. 5 Pastor Tim Brisson
Leviticus 8 (NRSV)
1The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Take Aaron and his sons with him, the vestments, the anointing oil, the bull of sin offering, the two rams, and the basket of unleavened bread; and assemble the whole congregation at the entrance of the tent of meeting.
And Moses did as the Lord commanded him. When the congregation was assembled at the entrance of the tent of meeting, Moses said to the congregation, “This is what the Lord has commanded to be done.”
Then Moses brought Aaron and his sons forward, and washed them with water. He put the tunic on him, fastened the sash around him, clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod on him. He then put the decorated band of the ephod around him, tying the ephod to him with it.
He placed the breastpiece on him, and in the breastpiece he put the Urim and the Thummim. And he set the turban on his head, and on the turban, in front, he set the golden ornament, the holy crown, as the Lord commanded Moses.
10 Then Moses took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it, and consecrated them. 11 He sprinkled some of it on the altar seven times, and anointed the altar and all its utensils, and the basin and its base, to consecrate them.
12 He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him, to consecrate him. 13 And Moses brought forward Aaron’s sons, and clothed them with tunics, and fastened sashes around them, and tied headdresses on them, as the Lord commanded Moses.
14 He led forward the bull of sin offering; and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the bull of sin offering, 15 and it was slaughtered. Moses took the blood and with his finger put some on each of the horns of the altar, purifying the altar; then he poured out the blood at the base of the altar. Thus he consecrated it, to make atonement for it.
22 Then he brought forward the second ram, the ram of ordination. Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram, 23 and it was slaughtered. Moses took some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot.
24 After Aaron’s sons were brought forward, Moses put some of the blood on the lobes of their right ears and on the thumbs of their right hands and on the big toes of their right feet; and Moses dashed the rest of the blood against all sides of the altar.
30 Then Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood that was on the altar and sprinkled them on Aaron and his vestments, and also on his sons and their vestments. Thus he consecrated Aaron and his vestments, and also his sons and their vestments.
the priests are being prepared to be sent, literally, to the promised land
this ceremony is a public clothing of the priests in the garments of God
the uniforms signify authority
blood on the ear, hands, and feet
we will talk about the ear in a minute
the hand holds the scrolls
the feet are how we are sent

Romans

Romans 10:14–17 (NRSV)
14 But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him? 15 And how are they to proclaim him unless they are sent?
As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” 16 But not all have obeyed the good news; for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?” 17 So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ.

blessed are your feet

Theme for tonight:

We are saved to be sent, not to sit

to be sent, we must be called

But how do we hear our own calling?

1 Samuel 3:1–10 (NRSV)
Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread.
At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was.
Then the Lord called, “Samuel! Samuel!” and he said, “Here I am!” and ran to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down.
The Lord called again, “Samuel!” Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.
The Lord called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
10 Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

Examples of NT callings

Peter’s calling

John 21:19–22 (NRSV)
19 After this he said to him, “Follow me.”
20 Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; he was the one who had reclined next to Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” 21 When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about him?” 22 Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me!”
Peter’s calling came in the context of forgiveness
do you love me more than these
and Peter keeps giving Jesus the but what abouts
Jesus gets him to focus on the calling
and calls him twice

Paul’s vision and calling

Acts 22:17–21 (NRSV)
17 “After I had returned to Jerusalem and while I was praying in the temple, I fell into a trance 18 and saw Jesus saying to me, ‘Hurry and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your testimony about me.’
19 And I said, ‘Lord, they themselves know that in every synagogue I imprisoned and beat those who believed in you. 20 And while the blood of your witness Stephen was shed, I myself was standing by, approving and keeping the coats of those who killed him.’
21 Then he said to me, ‘Go, for I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’ ”
Pauls’ calling came in a dream in this case, after his experience on the road to Damascus
Peter was called personally by Jesus, and Samuel was talked to
Jesus doesn’t even respond to Paul’s shame and regret
Jesus chooses not to remember it
He simply says “I will send you”
where? Far away
Pater and Paul were both called in spite of their obvious failures
Both were failing right up until the time they were called
No probation period
no long-term sobriety requirement
Jesus skips over Paul’s remorse and shame and re-iterates the calling
Peter had to be thinking of his denial of Jesus, which happened only weeks before
Either Peter or Paul could have sat in shame
But they were called
and they were sent
and they went

We are saved to be sent, not to sit in shame

Remember you are saved
you are forgiven, remember last week
When you are called, that is a real good indication that you are indeed forgiven

Isaiah

Isaiah 6:4–8 (NRSV)
4 The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. 5 And I said: “Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”
6 Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. 7 The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: “Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.”
8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I; send me!”
Isaiah was forgiven, called, and then sent in one scene
It is hard to hear God’s calling if you are stuck in self-loathing
self-shame
Stop trying to be your own priest and forgive yourself
Jesus has already done that work for you on the cross as your high priest
that is what we have been discussing for weeks now
He chose you
John 15:16 NRSV
16 You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name.

So put him on

Like Moses clothing Aaron in the priestly garments
We must clothe ourselves in Christ
But you may already have
Galatians 3:27 NRSV
27 As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
God clothed Aaron n front of the whole congregation
you were baptised likewise
a public demonstration of an inner change
so put him on proudly
like a uniform
Colossians 3:12–17 (NRSV)
12 As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. 13 Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
14 Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful.
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Paul doesn’t tell them what their calling is
he tells them what is feels like
Your calling will:
Be clothed in love
Bring peace into your heart
Promote harmony, and
Be in the name of Jesus

Prayer for submission to God’s will

O Holy Spirit, beloved of my soul, I adore You.
Enlighten me, guide me, strengthen me, console me.
Tell me what I should do; give me Your orders.
I promise to submit myself to all that You desire of me
and to accept all that You permit to happen to me.
Let me only know Your Will. Amen.
