Wives & Husbands, 3:18-19
Wives
It does not mean:
that women are subservient to men
that women are inferior to men
What does it mean to submit?
It means you will have to go against your personal desire
It means you will have to arrange yourself under your own husband.
The word is a military term meaning to arrange underneath in order.
Commanders set the overall strategy and direction but they do not make every decision or operate without input from those “below” them.
It means you still have the opportunity to be industrious and ambitions but that will cost you (as it does everyone)
Husbands
Love = agape, unconditional love that puts the needs and desires of another before those of self.
Don’t be bitter.
The word that is translated bitter comes from a root word that means to be sharp, to cut or to prick.
The word itself however, means to become embittered.
You cannot control how she treats you, but you can, and must, control how you respond.
Children & Parents (especially Fathers), 3:20-21
Children
Obey means both to listen to what you are told and to do what you are told.
“In all things” as one author noted all, radically means all.
Fathers
Provoke means to stir up but leave unfulfilled
Honor your promises
Own your mistakes
Seek consistency over coolness
Bondservants & Masters, 3:22-4:1
Slavery, whether voluntary or involuntary (both of which were practiced as a normal part of the cultures Paul lived in and wrote to) does not exist in our experience.
The closest relationship that we have today is employee/employer, but that is different enough that this is not a direct correlation.
That said, there are several principles that do transfer:
Ultimately, we serve God, not people
We should serve people as we serve God
We should treat people as God treats us
