Abel Background
Abel Background
Abel was the second son of Adam and Eve
He was the younger brother of Cain
His name in Hebrew means “breath” or “vapor”
It is thought that the reason his name was Abel was a connection with his early death
He was a shepherd
Abel brought the “firstborn” of his flock, signifying obedience to God
Jesus describes Abel as the first martyr (A person who suffers death for his or her faith or convictions) while connecting his murder with the murder of the prophets in Matthew 23:35 and Luke 11:51
from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. “Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible.
So all the righteous blood shed on the earth will be charged to you, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.

and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood, which says better things than the blood of Abel.
This verse is important because essentially it is saying that Abel’s blood brings condemnation but Jesus blood brings redemption. Thus Jesus blood was superior.
The author of Hebrews still commends the faith of Abel and says it still reaches people today because of that faith Hebrews 11:4
By faith Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was approved as a righteous man, because God approved his gifts, and even though he is dead, he still speaks through his faith.

In verse 2 we learn that Cain would work the ground and Abel would become a shepherd of flocks
In verse 3 and 4 we hear that Cain offers some of the lands produce to the Lord and we also hear that Abel presented an offering of the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions
The language here of “firstborn” for Abel and “some” for Cain explains why God accepted Abels and not Cains
It wasn’t that Abel gave him livestock and Cain didn’t but Abel gave the first born and Cain gave “some” produce.
Cain was angry about this and would go on and proceed to kill Abel
