The Shema
What verses are considered the Hebrew Shema?
Deuteronomy 6:4-9 “4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.
7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.
8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.
9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”
Verses 4-9 of Deuteronomy 6 are known as the Shema to the Jews which means “to hear”.
To Hear in Our culture:
- mental activity
- pick up sounds with ears
To Hear in Hebrew culture:
- call to action
- obedience
The word obey in the Old Testament is always translated Shema.
To hear is to “take heed” to “be obedient”.
What does the Hebrew word Shema mean?
It was recited daily in the synagogues and religious leaders legitimately wore it on their foreheads.
Jesus’ use of the Shema:
He said it contained the first and greatest commandment
Said the phrase “He who has ears let him hear.”
7 times in the Gospels
8 times in the book of Revelation
Was the Shema prayer important to Jesus?
In what ways?

In what ways?
Over the next 6 weeks we are going to focus on this passage of scripture by breaking it down into 3 sections to tie it back to your life, to encourage you in your walk, and to show you that making disciples is not as hard or time consuming as we might believe it to be.
You are making disciples right now within your home, within your work, within every relationship you’re in, whether you like it or not or whether you want to or not.
Let me share an example:
A mother with no arms was on an airplane with her child.
She was making her baby a bottle to drink for the plane ride.
While she was preparing it, a man walked up to her and asked if she found mothering to be difficult without her arms.
He credited this question’s reason for being asked to her graceful and relaxed demeanor as she accomplished her tasks.
The woman said she did not find the art of caring for her child difficult, because she had never known any other way.
She then mentioned, there is one draw back though.
At that time, she gave her child its bottle, at which point the child took it and began using its feet to feed itself.
This baby with two arms had never seen the use for them because of its mother’s influence.
You are building them in the ways of your life, whether you realize it or not.
This class will help you to identify and implement courses of action to biblically build disciples, starting with yourself, in a way that glorifies God, fits into your rhythm of life (not just another thing to add, but ways to weave it into your already busy schedule) and stirs your affections for the one we were all created to worship.
Section #1 “The Heart”
Section #2 “The Home”
Section #3 “The Community”
Today and next week we will focus on Section #1 “The Heart”.
"Train up a child in the way he should go – but be sure you go that way yourself."
Charles Spurgeon.
Homework:
Luke 6:43-46 “43 “For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, 44 for each tree is known by its own fruit.
For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush.
45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?”
Hebrews 4:12-13 “12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”
