This is a passage of wonders. For just inner three. Importance.
Ascends high mountain. Time prayer. Suburb heaven.
Then transfigured. Divinity shines through. Dazzling, confusing
Pillars OT – Moses, Elijah. Speaking easily, Cast out time.
Great cloud glory settles – Sinai. Very voice God. What sound?
“this is my Son, my Chosen one; listen to him”. Wow!
Place great spiritual ecstasy, importance. Second only Golgotha.
Oh been there! Part that small band. What men they were!
But look again. What they actually did. Gone to pray, but sleep.
Jesus transfigured! Glorious scene. Moses, Elijah.
“Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep”!!
Only as “they became fully awake” that they saw Jesus’s glory.
Could not stay awake to pray. We sleepwalk through prayer!
Wander mind. No engagement. Miss glory! Eph 5:14
“Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
Well those disciples did wake up fully, drank in scene…
Peter speaks up. Perhaps wants to prolong. Offers to make tents.
Why? Who knows! “Not knowing what he said”. Incoherence!
But then cloud: “This is my Son, my Chosen One; listen to him!”. The point of Transfiguration not Moses and Elijah, but Christ.
He does not gain authority from them, but they from him.
No tents! Listen to words. In front is one greater Moses/Elijah
Son of God himself!
This reveals Christ to us. But also the disciples.
Jesus more than wonder worker, exemplar. Son!
But also disciples:
I Not extraordinary in selves. Sleep, nonsense. Such as us!
II Stay awake! Engage. Maybe need start small, but start!
III Point is not the experience of Transfiguration but listen word.
XY is about hearing then doing. Practical.
So: “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you!” Rub the sleep from your eyes and listen.
