1 Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them,
2 that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.
3 And the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”
4 There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.
Who are the sons of God?
Who are the giants spoken of?
Who are the Sons of God
Two general interpretation,
one is that it is reffering to the son of Seth and the daughters of men the daughters of cain.
The second interpretation is that it is reffering to angels /fallen angels and the daughters of men are the daughters of the seth.
The second interpretation seems to the the one that is correct.
The sons of God (6 times in OT, 2 of which in Genesis 6), in the Old Testament always is used to reffer to Angels
Job 1:6 “6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them.”
Job 2:1 “1 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the Lord.”
Job 38:7 “7 When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?”
Dan 3:25 “25 “Look!” he answered, “I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.””
Therefore to say that the Son of God is reffering to the Sons of seth it would be reading into the text what is not there
2. New Testament witness. (How the Apostle interpretated this scripture)
4 For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment;
5 and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly;
6 and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly;
6 And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day;
7 as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
8 Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries.
This is not reffering to the fall of satan and his angels
9 So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
job 4:18-21
If He puts no trust in His servants,
If He charges His angels with error,
How much more those who dwell in houses of clay,
Whose foundation is in the dust,
Who are crushed before a moth?
They are broken in pieces from morning till evening;
They perish forever, with no one regarding.
Does not their own excellence go away?
They die, even without wisdom.’
If God puts no trust in His saints,
And the heavens are not pure in His sight,
How much less man, who is abominable and filthy,
Who drinks iniquity like water!
“I will tell you, hear me;
What I have seen I will declare,
What wise men have told,
Not hiding anything received from their fathers,
Objection
mark 12:25 “25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.”
Who are the giants
4 There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.
The giants were not a the children from this union but were something else all together.
They were there before, during and after this event
They were called giants because they were might men, men of renown.
Giant in the sense of denoting those who makes themselves renowned for bold and daring deeds. To accomplishing great feats
8 Cush begot Nimrod; he began to be a mighty one on the earth.
9 He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod the mighty hunter before the Lord.”
10 And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.
11 From that land he went to Assyria and built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah,
The first man to unite all the people and form a kingdom with cities
it is also common today to reffer to those who have accomplished great things in our day to reffer to them as “gaints in their day”
So to say that the children that came from this union were giants is mythology.
