Disciples crowded boat with Jesus, he suggested all cross.
Scene.
Not gentle paddling: 8 miles wide, 140 feet drop to bottom)
Most fisherman could not swim.
But set out, and Jesus sleeps.
Storm arises.
Water laps into boat.
Know danger.
Risk sinking.
Great fear of the sea.
Jesus asleep!
Master, Master, we are perishing”.
Wonder of wonders, speaks, storm ceases, waters are calm.
This is scary stuff; normally storms don’t listen to reason.
Disciples fearful.
“Who then is this….”.
Astonishing.
So why “where is you faith”?!?
Sympathy with disciples.
I be more than a little concerned.
I woken Jesus.
In fact that show faith he can do something?
And yet he then tuned and rebuked them.
Why?
Made worse since throughout Luke Jesus praised faith all sorts.
Four with paralysed man, centurion in Capernaum.
Woman wiped his feet with hair.
But the disciples?! Where…!
The disciples had seen this, of course, or at least heard about it.
Seen Jesus perform wonders, and been taught by Jesus himself.
Responded to call to follow him, leave all else behind.
Knew Jesus someone to be trusted, someone to be followed.
On whom divine favour rested.
So if said “go across” he meant it.
Will arrive, storm no storm.
Squall not mean end, just difficulty.
Trust.
Easy if all well, not if bad.
Panic.
Doubt.
Out God’s control.
Are times we walk in valley…, but even there Lord shepherd.
This is a passage to store up in heart for when difficult.
Storm does not mean Christ absent, or failing.
Will make it!
Finish with Newton:
A word from Jesus calms the sea,
The stormy wind controls;
And gives repose and liberty
To tempest-tosséd souls.
