the Hypo-static Union is God and man in one person in in separately united in one person forever, without the loss of identity or mixture of the two natures.
Jesus is the unique person of the universe. He is manganese, uniquely born. He is all deity, the Son of God is God and does not change to becomes man. His deity remains in tact. Jesus is true humanity. He is as much a human being as you and I, He feels the heat of the day and the cold of night.
the testings of our Lord was real. they were a real challenge. He had to suffer through them.
Hebrews 2:6–8 (NASB95) — 6 But one has testified somewhere, saying, “What is man, that You remember him? Or the son of man, that You are concerned about him? 7 “You have made him for a little while lower than the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor, And have appointed him over the works of Your hands; 8 You have put all things in subjection under his feet.” For in subjecting all things to him, He left nothing that is not subject to him. But now we do not yet see all things subjected to him.
Matthew 4:1–2 (NASB95) — 1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry.
διάβολος [diabolos /dee·ab·ol·os/] adj. Slanderer; False accuser.
this is the one who stood in the throne room of the Lord who in his arrogance spoke to God about his faithful one.
Job 1:6–12 (NASB95) — 6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. 7 The Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?” Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.” 8 The Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil.” 9 Then Satan answered the Lord, “Does Job fear God for nothing? 10 “Have You not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. 11 “But put forth Your hand now and touch all that he has; he will surely curse You to Your face.” 12 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power, only do not put forth your hand on him.” So Satan departed from the presence of the Lord.
Job did have his failures. and it was Job also had his comebacks. Jesus is now man who is being tested but this time all the way to the cross and to his death. but it Satan will even then not be in charge of the death of our Lord.
Point of Application: there is coming a time of testing for the believer who walks righteously before the Lord.
1 Peter 1:6–7 (NASB95) — 6 In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, 7 so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
will it be as severe as Job’s? will it be to the death? we do not know. But the Devil is still accusing those and putting on trial for cross examination those that profess the Lord and who are walking righteously before Him.
One says I am trusting in the Lord with all my heart and I am resolved to walk righteously before God. this one is truly growing in the Lord. this one has his priorities straight seeking for the Kingdom and God’s righteousness and will one day in his resurrected body be ruling with the King of Kings the Lord of Lords. And it is the Devil who is saying right now, “Well, we will see about that!”
2 And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
We want to be reminded of and stay connected to what was said in the garden between the woman and the Serpent
Genesis 3:1 (NASB95) — 1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?”
what was the serpent doing? He was laying seeds of doubt by questioning the word of the Lord.
Now is the time for cross examination of the one who is the Son of God.
What happened just prior to the Jesus Journeying out into the wilderness?
His baptism
And what was proclaimed from Heaven when Jesus came up out of the water?
Matthew 3:17 (NASB95) — 17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”
The Devil will now cross examine the witness. Satan Says, “we will just see about that”
Matthew 4:3 (NASB95) — 3 And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
The hunger was real. Jesus was starving. His body was now at the point where it was feeding upon itself. it would have been easy for the Lord to fall down on a loaf of bread and devour it. Jesus would have bodily cravings just as any of us. This Jesus is the one who had created everything out of nothing. He will even go on to feed the multitudes. There would be no effort on Jesus’ part to simply speak and sit down for a banquet.
But to so the Lord would
1. Be rejecting the Father’s plan.
Jesus was to humble himself as a man. This took sitting aside some of the attributes of deity. Jesus was still all God, He had the power to do just what the tempter suggested.
Philippians 2:5–8 (NASB95) — 5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Jesus as God had the power to turn the stones into bread. That power is not extended to his humanity, yes, he could, but not without calling upon his deity to come to the aid of His humanity.
2. In doing so Jesus would have repeated the sin of Adam.
He would have subordinated the word of the Lord under the words of Satan and oriented to them.
When it is all said in done in the life of Christ, the devil will never have had called the shots. and he does not call the shots with any believer who is walking in righteousness. He may bring hell against a believer, but it is the believer in faith that echoes the words of Job.
Job 13:15 (NASB95) — 15 “Though He slay me, I will hope in Him. Nevertheless I will argue my ways before Him.
The results would have been disastrous for all of the human race if Jesus would have turned even the least of a pebble into a cookie. For then it would have disqualified the Last Adam from going to the cross to pay for the sins of man. our last hope for Salvation would have been gone. Jesus would have to die for his own sin against God.
You see, Adam’s rule was contingent upon His complete loyalty and obedience to God. Adam was to rule the dominion within the boundaries of God’s plan.
The first sin of man was about eating. The boundary was food.
Genesis 2:17 (NASB95) — 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
The first Adam Ate and died and in Adam all die.
Hebrews 4:15–16 (NASB95) — 15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
