Consider the nature of man. a. 1:13a We tend to blame others for our sin, even God (See Prov 19:3; Gen 3:12.). b. 1:14a We all face temptation (See 1 Cor 10:12-13). c. 1:14b Our temptation comes from our own lusts/desires (See Jms 4:1-4; Prov 4:23; Mt 15:19.). d. 1:15 Unaddressed desire leads to sin, and sin leads to death (See Gen 2:17; Rom 5:12; 6:23.). e. 1:16-17 We are easily deceived about the goodness of God (Compare Gen 3.). f. 1:18 Our purpose is to be a “firstfruits of His creatures” (Eph 2:8-10). 2. Consider the character of God. a. 1:13b God is not tempted by evil. b. 1:13c God Himself tempts no one. c. 1:17a God is the Giver of every good and perfect gift. d. 1:17b He is the unchanging “Father of lights.” e. 1:18 God is the source of our new birth.
