Introduction

Greetings…
Theme: Expound
Lesson Today: Expound

We Must Learn Something

Luke 5:1–3 ESV
1 On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

We Must Be Willing To Learn.

To be a disciple of Christ one we must be willing to admit we don’t know everything.
We all know people that have the attitude “No one can teach me anything.”
As we just noticed in our text Jesus was preaching by the Sea of Galilee.
Nearby, Peter was beside his fishing boat cleaning his nets.
He and his partners had been fishing all night but had caught nothing but likely mud and sore muscles.
We can almost see Peter over a bit cleaning the mud and weeds out of the knots of the net while listening to Jesus teach.
This wasn’t the first time, of course, Peter had met Jesus. Peter traveled with Christ to Judea but had gone back to Galilee to his former occupation.
As Jesus preached, on the shore, more and more people came to hear him.
As the crowd grew they pressed Jesus back against the sea.
You can almost imagine as Jesus backed up his feet and sandals feeling the water behind him, he turned and made his way to Peter and his boat.
He asked the fisherman to push the boat out to sea a bit so he could use this boat as a makeshift pulpit.
Now what do you think Peter was doing at this point?
He was “listening” but what was he listening to?
Remember how Luke 5:1 starts…
Luke 5:1 ESV
1 On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret,
Peter was listening to Jesus teach the “word of God.”
Simply put you cannot be a disciple of Jesus the Christ without listening to him through his word and learning what he has to say.
Matthew 11:29 ESV
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Summary

Many claim to be disciples of Jesus but they remain ignorant of his word day after day, year after year.
No one can be a disciple of Christ and stay ignorant of God’s word.
Secondly, as disciples of Christ…

We Must Understand Something

Luke 5:3–5 ESV
3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.”
Luke 5:6–8 ESV
6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. 7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”

Learning Vs Understanding.

As you have heard me say over and over there is a huge difference between “knowing information” and understanding that information.”
One means to have the knowledge of something particular while understanding means to have a full grasp of that knowledge.
Wisdom goes one step further by allowing us to understand how to apply that knowledge and understanding.
Jesus ever aware of this in his creation demonstrates this truth to Peter.
When Jesus finished his sermon he turns to Peter and asked him to “let down his fishing nets into the deep for a catch.”
Peter knew what ever fisherman on the Sea of Galilee knew and that was the time to fish was at night not during the day.
The place to fish was in the shallow water, not the deep.
Not to mention he had just been up all night and was exhausted.
It would have been perfectly natural for Peter to feel some resentment at having a carpenter tell him a professional fisherman how to fish.
In fact his first response might even indicate this, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing.”
The word Master here is not the typical word. It is only used in Luke account of Jesus and Jesus only and it is a compound word that means “stand over” or one that has complete authority over another.
Peter understood something, he understood Jesus was his Master and he was the slave.
Hence, Peter’s next statement, “But at your word I will let down the nets.”
How did Jesus reward Peter’s obedience?
By having the nets so full Peter needed help bringing them in and the nets were tearing apart from the weight.
Not only this James and John brought their boat over and both boats were so full they were in danger of sinking.

Summary

Most of the time, the teachings and demands of God through his word make sense to us but that isn’t always a guarantee.
The question isn’t “Is this reasonable to me.”
The questions is “Is this what Christ has asked of me to do.”
John 14:15 ESV
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
Having now this learning of God’s word and this understanding that Jesus is master we find that discipleship has another requirement.
It requires…

We Must Acknowledge Something

Luke 5:8–10 ESV
8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” 9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”

Jesus Is Lord Of Everything.

Peter had witnessed Jesus turning the water into grape juice (John 2:1-11).
Peter had witnessed Jesus heal the nobleman’s son (John 4:46-54).
Peter had been present for many other signs and wonders (John 2:23; John 3:2).
However, none of those miracles actually affected him personally.
This miracle occurred to him, involved his occupation, and was done where he lived.
It caused Peter to acknowledge that Jesus is Lord of “everything.”
As Peter saw Jesus in this new light he also found himself in a new light.
He fell down on his knees and said, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man” like every person has responded when confronted with power and glory of God.
Genesis 18:27 ESV
27 Abraham answered and said, “Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes.
Isaiah 6:5 ESV
5 And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”

Summary

To be a disciple of Christ we must acknowledge two truths.
First, we must acknowledge that Jesus is “our everything” i.e., he is our Lord.
Romans 10:9 ESV
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Secondly, as we acknowledge Jesus is our everything we must also acknowledge we are “nothing” and need Jesus.
Luke 17:10 ESV
10 So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’ ”
Discipleship in Christ requires also…

We Must Change Something

Luke 5:10 ESV
10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”

Become Fishers Of Men.

When Peter recognized the great gulf between him and Jesus he begged Jesus, to “depart from him.”
Thankfully Jesus did not grant his wish but instead responded by drawing Peter closer to him.
How did Jesus draw Peter closer to him?
By requesting a change in Peter, a change to “”not being afraid and a change his occupation.”
“Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”
Peter’s new occupation was to “be catching men.”
The word “catching” here is in the present tense meaning continuous action.
This was not a “one-time” action but a “lifelong” action.
The word “catch” literally means “to catch alive.”
In other words, Peter was going to be bringing men to Christ “catching men and women” so that they could be “made of live” by him who “give life.”
John 6:33 ESV
33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

Summary

There is a sign I once read that said, “My business is serving God. I sell pencils to pay the bills.”
Discipleship requires a change in our understanding of God.
We also see from our text that discipleship requires…

We Must Give Up Something

Luke 5:11 ESV
11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

Full-Time Discipleship.

As mentioned before, Peter had followed Jesus for a time but had gone back home.
Jesus was now asking Peter to be a “full-time” disciple.
There is no doubt that Peter and his fishing partners had a thriving business.
They were able to hire servants (Mark 1:20).
James and John’s mother financially supported Jesus and his disciples (Matthew 27:55-56; Luke 8:3).
John was known to the High Priest (John 18:15).
Jesus was asking these men to leave their highly profitable business and follow him.
This wasn’t an unusual request from Jesus.
In Luke 14:33 Jesus declared…
Luke 14:33 ESV
33 So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.
In Mark 10:21 Jesus told the rich man…
Mark 10:21 ESV
21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”

Summary

The point isn’t that each one of us has to sell everything we have to obey God and live for him.
The point is that we must be willing to change and get rid of anything that would hinder us from eternity with our God.

Conclusion

To “follow Jesus the Christ” and thus be his disciple we must…
Learning from Jesus through his word.
Understanding what Jesus wants from us within his word.
Acknowledge Jesus is our everything and we are nothing.
Change our how we view ourselves in light of who our God is to be his humble servant.
Give up our lives for our Christ and live full-time in his service.
Invitation
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
Romans 10:17 ESV
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Hebrews 11:6 ESV
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Acts 17:30 ESV
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
Matthew 10:32 NKJV
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.
2 Thessalonians 1:8 ESV
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 ESV
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
Romans 6:3–5 ESV
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
1 John 1:7 ESV
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
