SLIDE: Series Graphic

Introduction

Beginning of the entire Bible
Everything that follows in the Bible is inseparably connected to these two verses.
Who am I?
How did I get here?
Who is God?
How am I supposed to live?
What is wrong?
What is wrong with me?
What is marriage?
What is the role of the wife?
What is a family?
What is the Devil?
What is his most dangerous lie?
What is sin?
What is the consequence of sin?
And is there any hope?
What is death?
What lies on the others side (of death)?
Old earth or young earth?
Before the beginning there was nothing—except God.
There was not even heaven, nor earth, nor the solar system.
“In the beginning God created....”
Everything is flowing from God.
El o him
Majestic plural
El the mighty one —j in the plural means the almighty one.
2,000 times in the OT
The Almighty God — 2,310 times
Uncreated Creator
Moses wrote one Psalm
Psalm 90:2 ESV
2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
Revelation 4:8 ESV
8 And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”
Omnipotence
Created — IN the beginning God created!
God created from nothing.
When we create...
heaven means height - plural - height of height
outer space - solar system - sky - home of the stars, planets, sun, galaxies
heaven itself
Psalm 33:6 ESV
6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.
The heavens and the earth - a merism
To believe this is to be a believer in the Word of God.
To not to believe it is to be an unbeliever in the Word of God.
Hebrews 11:3 ESV
3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
If everything exists now, then there never could have been a time when there was nothing.
ex nihilo nihil fit - out of nothing nothing comes
Creation implies a creator
Nothing times nobody equals everything.
A.W. Pink
There was a time, if “time” it could be called, when God, in the unity of His nature (though subsisting equally in three divine persons), dwelt all alone. “In the beginning God.” There was no heaven, where His glory is now particularly manifested. There was no earth to engage His attention. There were no angels to hymn His praises; no universe to be upheld by the word of His power. There was nothing, no one, but God; and that, not for a day, a year, or an age, but “from everlasting.” During eternity past, God was alone: self-contained, self-sufficient, self-satisfied; in need of nothing. Had a universe, had angels, had human beings been necessary to Him in any way, they also had been called into existence from all eternity. The creating of them when He did, added nothing to God essentially. He changes not (Mal 3:6), therefore His essential glory can be neither augmented nor diminished.

2. The condition of the earth

It was deformed (originally created this way. A mass of material.
Formless - a mass of material
Hebrew word for formless
Deut 32 for wasteland
Is 44 desolate place
Is 41 and empty place
Is 59 a confused place - no order
When God first created the earth is was uninhabited, unproductive
It was deformed and would need to be formed. Conformed to His blueprint. Undeveloped. Unorganized. Indistinct. Yet all the material he would need He has created and put there.
ILL: an artist who makes a statue, a piece of pottery. Raw dirt, raw clay.
Blobs of paint on a pallet.

3. The coming of the Spirit

deut 32:11 - like an eagle over its nest
hovering and moving over the earth
water covering the surface of the earth - covering the mass of material
the earth is lifeless, engulfed in darkness, covered by water
draw this out
beauty out of barrenness
form out of futility
Conclusion
This creator God was Jesus Christ, the Son of God
John 1:1 will sound like Gen 1:1
John 1:3
Colossians 1:15–16 ESV
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
This says a lot about you. You were created for God…not for yourself.
Jesus is right here with the Spirit and the Father.
Gen 1:2 pictures your life
You too were born in darkness - spiritual darkness
In sin
Your life was a barren wasteland
You must become a new creation
God did not leave you a barren wasteland
Hovered over you…convicted you…called you…drew you…made you to be a new creation.
The creation of the universe
The light of God’s illumination came pouring forth from God and lit up your soul

I. Foundations matter

Explanation

Bārāʾ, “created”

For a study of this word, see Appendix 2. The study will show that God is always the subject and that the result is always something perfect, new, fresh, or whole. It describes the work of shaping, reshaping, or bringing to perfection. It may be defined as “to fashion anew”—a divine activity.
