John 2:13-22 (Pew Bible 751)
"When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money.
So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.
To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here!
How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market!”
His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”
Then the Jews demanded of him, “What miraculous sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”
The Jews replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?”
But the temple he had spoken of was his body.
After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said.
Then they believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken."

Introduction
Do we have any yard salers here this morning?
There's just something about yard sales... they are very difficult to just pass by.
Sometimes we must stop just to look... even if we have no money to spend.
Ah, yes!
That is truly living!
Now imagine coming to church on a Sunday morning to find a huge large sale taking place all over the church property.
All lawn and parking space is taken up with tables and animal pens.
Cages with a variety of birds are also scattered across the church's landscape.
Two ushers are posted at the front doors.
You are not allowed to enter the church for worship until you have made appropriate purchases at this flea market.
Then, upon entering, you must surrender your purchase as an act of worship.
What would you do?
Would you participate?
Would you walk away?
Would you start attending another church?
I suspect that few would be present inside this church.

Message
* Passover – an annual festival all Jewish men were to celebrate in Jerusalem.
* Temple Courts – several acres known as the Court of the Gentiles, surrounding the temple proper.
This court was as close as Gentiles could get to worship and pray.
Animals for sacrifice were required at Passover.
All sorts of “acceptable” animals were provided for in the Court of the Gentiles.
This included currency exchange into the temple currency, required for the annual temple tax.
* Jesus had several concerns about this “market place.”
* this court was being used as a shortcut between the city and the Mount of Olives
* the availability of sacrificial animals, while necessary for travelers, should not be within the courts of the temple
* this market excluded Gentiles from worship... it took up their designated space, interfering with God's provision
* currency exchange should also take place beyond the temple courts
* the merchants were robbers
* they robbed the people by taking financial advantage
* they robbed the temple of its sanctity
* The Jews mistook Jesus' for speaking of the temple building, which has taken 46 years to this point, but was not yet completed (until 64 A.D.).
Jesus was speaking of the temple of his body.
* After Jesus was raised from the dead, the discples understood what he meant.
This resulted in unfettered belief in Jesus and the Scripture!

Conclusion
Jesus reclaimed the temple.
He reclaims us!
Do we keep the temple in order?
