The Lost

A few years ago I went racing in the Broken Arrow area.
They had these electric carts that I know went over 50, I think they went 80.
They weren’t your everyday go-carts.
Anyway, I went one round and smoked everyone.
Then I ate some supper.
We had another round after that.
I got out there and got sick.
I just knew I was going to throw up in my helmet.
I had to quit in the middle of the round.
I got out and the guy watching the track said “Why are you stopping, you’re winning.”
I said, “I’m about to lose it”
I went straight to the bathroom.
I won’t tell you what happened in there.
I told you all that to tell you what happened after that.
I’m still really sick at my stomach and dizzy.
I must have had a mild sinus infection.
Anyway, I head up 169 to get home and somewhere along the way I get lost.
You can ask Cristy this, I never get lost.
Even in places that I don’t know, I don’t lose my cool.
I called Cristy. I told her I didn’t know where i was.
I couldn’t see the signs very well.
Well, just having a voice I recognized on the phone with me helped.
I soon was able to see a sign and figure out I was in Owasso.
I hit an exit, turned around and got back on 44/412.
I was lost, but then I was found.
This week we had Sue’s funeral.
One of the things that I found out was that one of Sue’s favorite Bible stories is the story of the lost sheep.
I already had this sermon planned for today.
We are going to talk about:

The Lost

Luke 15:1–10 NKJV
1 Then all the tax collectors and the sinners drew near to Him to hear Him. 2 And the Pharisees and scribes complained, saying, “This Man receives sinners and eats with them.” 3 So He spoke this parable to them, saying: 4 “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? 5 And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ 7 I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance. 8 “Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? 9 And when she has found it, she calls her friends and neighbors together, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which I lost!’ 10 Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

The Situation

Before this account, Jesus had been at a Pharisees house.
I’m assuming that he’s somewhere else now.
In verse 1, it says the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near.
One thing we know for sure is that one of his inner circle was Matthew. He was a tax collector.
The fisherman were probably considered sinners.
So most of Jesus’ disciples were tax collectors or sinners.
What they didn’t understand is that all of us are sinners.
We’ll come back to that later
Here’s the truth, many people don’t understand the situation they are in.
We church people look down on those we consider sinners.
We ARE the sinners.
So Jesus is going to talk to us about his love for those who are lost.
He’s going to tell us 2 stories.

The Sheep

I know this is about sheep, but most of us don’t identify with them.
Except Sandra.
For those of us that don’t, think of the sheep as a baby calf.
They can’t do much for themselves.
They need us and their momma for everything.
We lost 2 calves last year.
For us, it’s a big loss, but we don’t depend on that income.
For someone back then, they depended on their sheep as income.
So finding a lost sheep was important.
Imagine someone finding their sheep and putting it on their back.
They would be happier than a camel on hump day.
What the pharisees are missing is that they should be happy that people are being saved.
They should be happy that people’s lives are being saved.
Instead they are saying he’s associating with them.
Heaven rejoices when someone who is lost is saved.
Here’s one last nugget - the shepherd had to go out away from the flock to find the lost sheep.
We have to go out.

The Silver

The first story talked about how much rejoicing there would be when a sinner is saved.
The second story talks about the thoroughness of the search.
Luke 15:8 NKJV
8 “Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it?
I believe the first story is pointed toward the Pharisees, pointing out the fact that they need to be rejoicing.
This story is aimed at them but is especially aimed at the disciples and us.
Are we searching everywhere?
A while back, maybe a year ago, we lost the keys to our truck.
We searched through the couch, under the bed, in the yard.
We looked everywhere we thought it could be.
I don’t know if you know how much those keys cost, but they have to be programmed.
It cost over $200 to replace it.
The point is that we looked everywhere.
The coin was valuable to this woman. It was probably worth a day’s wage.
She was happy she found, especially after so long a search.
The Lost was found
So who is the lost that Jesus is talking about?

The Sinner

In that day, who were the sinners?
The whole world, except those who trusted in the promises of the God of the universe.
That was the Jews.
Except that a good portion of them were trusting on their own ability to follow God’s laws.
Psalm 119:105 KJV 1900
105 NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, And a light unto my path.
God’s word shows us the way.
It isn’t a way unto itself.
See the problem is that none of us are perfect and we can’t be.
Psalm 14:3 KJV 1900
3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: There is none that doeth good, no, not one.
What the Pharisees ignored was the fact that they could never be perfect.
It was in the word, and they didn’t see it
Genesis 15:6 KJV 1900
6 And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
Our righteousness comes by faith
Romans 3:21–23 KJV 1900
21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Time after time, God called on the Pharisees to repent.
Why were the Pharisees and scribes called out like that?
I believe it was because they were not trusting in God but instead were trusting in themselves to keep the law.
So here’s what I want to say about all of this.
We are to preach and teach like everyone is lost and tell them the way of salvation is to trust in the Lord.
So we need to go everywhere, search everything, and look every place for sinners.
We need to look for the Lost everywhere.
And as we go, the gospel we must share.
