Introduction: The implications of justification by grace through faith are now drawn out.
The transition from wrath (1:18) to grace (3:21) transforms both the status and the experience of the believer.
Instead of estrangement (3:10–17) there is now peace (5:1);
in place of falling short of God’s glory through sin (3:23), there is the hope of glory (5:2);
instead of suffering as judgment (2:5, 6), there is joy in tribulation because of what God produces through it (5:3);
instead of fearful uncertainty, there is assurance of God’s love (vv. 6–8) and joy in Him (v. 11).

A. PEACE WITH GOD (1)

Therefore (oun) - consequently, these things being so
have been justified (dikaioo) [Tense-Aorist, Voice-Passive, Mood - Participle]
through faithby means of
peace with (pros - on the side of) God
How important is peace with God ?
Have we lost the significance of fearing God?

B. ACCESS TO GRACE IN WHICH WE STAND (2a)

through him – Jesus Christ
obtained (echo) [Tense-Perfect, Voice-Active, Mood - Indicative] access (prosagoge) - the act of bringing to, a moving to (only used two other places in NT); to have access to the presence of a superior
Ephesians 2:18 ESV
18 For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.
Ephesians 3:12 ESV
12 in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him.
into this grace in which we stand - what we’ve been given access to
Not only do we have peace with God, but understand that this peace is not just a guarded truce, but we are given access to God’s very presence.
Hebrews 4:14–16 ESV
14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

C. REJOICING IN HOPE, EVEN IN TRIBULATIONS (2b-4)

This hope of present peace with God and access to His grace plays out in or everyday lives. For instead of our sufferings being a part of God’s judgment, they are a part of His grace that produces endurance and strengthens our hope. Therefore, we...
Rejoice (Kauchaomai) - to glory on account of a thing

1. Joy in anticipating God's glory (2b)

The word glory usually means splendor, magnificence, honor; and the apostle here refers to that honor and dignity which will be conferred on the redeemed when they are raised up to the full honors of redemption; when they shall triumph in the completion of the work; and be freed from sin, and pain, and tears, and permitted to participate in the full splendors that shall encompass the throne of God in the heavens. - Barnes

2. Joy in tribulation, knowing even it results in more hope (3-4)

a) For tribulation produces perseverance (3b)

Hupomone - steadfastness, constancy, endurance

b) And perseverance develops character (4a)

Dokime - a specimen of tried worth

c) Such character gives one hope (4b)

Elpis - joyful and confident expectation

D. GOD'S LOVE IN OUR HEARTS (5-8)

This developed hope is not a sham but is real because it is based on God’s love that is defined in the following verses.

1. The assurance our hope will not be disappointed (5a)

does not us us to shame (kataischuno) - to dishonor, disgrace, humiliate [Tense-Present, Voice-Active, Mood - Indicative]

2. Poured out by the Holy Spirit (5b)

poured out (ekcheo) - distribute largely
his love (agape) – God’s love as defined by action

3. Demonstrated by Christ's death while we were yet sinners (6-8)

God’s love characterized (6)
at just the right time
we were still powerless
Man’s love contrasted (7)
die for righteous man
die for good man
God shows (synistemi [pre, act, ind] - exhibited, provide evidence for) his love (agape) (8)
While we were still sinners, Christ died for us

E. SALVATION FROM GOD'S WRATH (9-11)

1. Through Jesus, just as we have been justified by His blood (9)

It is much more to be expected; there are still stronger and more striking considerations to show it
Much (polus) - many, large
More (mallon) - much, by far
An assurance that we have escaped the wrath of God because He has Justified us by the blood of His son!

2. Saved by His life, just as we were reconciled by His death (10)

Christ’s death brought friendship
Christ’s life brings Sonship
Romans 8:29 ESV
29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

3. The basis for us to rejoice (11)
