Two Commands to Children

Obey

Continually
Not just when your parents are watching.
Delayed obedience is disobedience.
As to the Lord
Disobeying your parents is disobeying the Lord.
You cannot be walking with Jesus while being rebellious to your parents.
The Lord is the higher authority than your parents.
For this is right

Honor

Honor means to show respect, reverence, and value to that which is honored.
This explains “the how” you should obey your parents - with respect.
Honor also means to not bring shame.
Remember the promise.
While obeying is for while the child is in the house, honoring is for life.

Equal Obedience and Honor

Notice that Paul instructs children to obey and honor both parents.
Parents should not allow children to play one off the other.
Parents should set the example by honoring each other in front of their children.

Challenges to Obeying These Commands

Unbelieving parents
Parents who are not honorable
