Good morning, friends, we’re so glad you have tuned in to hear God’s Precepts and Promises this morning brought to you by the Rome Church of Christ.

We’re examining Christianity systematically--taking all the Bible has to say on a subject and putting it together as best as possible. Letting the Bible speak

The Meaning of the Atonement

Atonement: the removal or forgiveness of sin; an atonement satisfies the divine wrath of God

kpr—To cover over, to pacify, to propitiate (Lev 17:11)

•Katallagē: To be reconciled back to God (Rom 5:11)

• At-one-ment—being united again with God (2 Cor5:18-20)

•Atonement is vicarious or substitutionary (Lev 1:4; Is 53:4; 2 Cor5:21)

The Mandate

•God’s nature demands satisfaction for sin

•“…will by no means clear the guilty” (Ex 34:7)

•His justice cannot overlook sin (Rom 1:18-20)

•Someone’s got to pay the price

•The horror of sin

•Separation from God (Is 59:2)

•Death (Gen 2:17; Rom 6:23)

Q: What is the extent of the atonement of Christ?

A: God his only Son for the world (Jn 3:16); He is not only our propitiation but all (1 Jn 2:2). The atoning death of Christ on the Cross was intended to benefit all of God’s creation. Yet only His people will benefit (Mt 1:21; Eph 5:23).

The Means of the Atonement

•God always required blood to appease His wrath (Lev 17:11)

•Sin = death (Gen 2:17; Eze18:20)

•Blood = life (Gen 9:4, Lev 17:11)

•To have life again, we must have the blood of a perfect sacrifice (Jn1:29)

•Animals cannot pay the price (Heb 10:4-5; 1 Pet 1:18-19; 1 Pet 3:18)

The Motive of the Atonement

•His love moved him (Eph 2:4; Jn3:16)

•His mercy moved Him (Eph 2:4)

•His grace moved Him (Eph 2:5)

•These motives resulted in our reconciliation in one body (Eph2:16)

CONCLUSION

Sum: Only Jesus could atone for our sins at the Cross

John Howe: The wrong that man had done to the Divine Majesty should be expiated by none but man, and could be by none but God. Behold…both in the one Immanuel!
