Introduction

Good Morning, The title of today’s message is What do you do if you mess Up? Ya know in a perfect world with perfect people we would live perfect little lives. The problem is we do not live in a perfect world, quite the opposite our world is very broken. It is sin cursed. Another problem we face is that there is no perfect person. No matter how hard we try we just cannot live perfect lives. I mean there are a lot of folks who try to live good lives, if fact many people think living good lives will get ya into heaven. We know that is a lie. Your good works is not ever good enough to redeem you from the wretchedness of sin. But some folks believe that contrary to what the word of God says. And then there are the folks who understand their wretchedness, know that if they don't repent their sins wont be forgiven…so they do believe that the Lord Jesus and his sacrifice, ask for forgiveness, repent of their sins, and commit their life to live according to God’s standard. What we call being a Christian, Your life has been born again, something has changed. Like I said many times something has to change. If there was not change in your life than you were not saved. nothing has changed than nothing has changed. Now you are a Christian, if you are truly a Christian then you will notice things change in your life. Now there are two natures living in you, The born again you, and the old you. One of the biggest differences in my own life was my attitude toward sin...
Here is the scenario…You are a Christian and you are trying hard to grow in your faith, you are reading and praying everyday, fellow-shipping with others, coming to church every week, serving when you can, sharing your faith, and just trying to be like Jesus everyday… Then you sin, You mess up big time. You chose to do something that goes against God standard’s and you know it breaks His heart…Now it begins to break your heart. Guilt shame and pain sets in, maybe the consequences of your sin is unfolding before your eyes. Guilt, shame, and pain always comes with sin… and now it is bearing down on you. What do you do? What do you do when you mess up?
Turn to psalm 6 David will be instructing us what to do when we mess up...
David stands out in the bible for many reasons, he was the one in the Bible who is called a man after God own heart, he is the most successful king of Israel, he also messed up a lot, but for me, David stands out as one who has mastered repentance...
Psalm 6 reminds us what we need to do when we mess up
I. Repentance is our first priority -Change of Heart - Vs 1-3 The first thing that we read in this psalm is a penitent statement. It is clear from these first words that David messed up in some way. He sinned and he knew it. The sin is not disclosed but no doubt it did some things. It brought guilt and shame on David, he knew he broke God’s standard. Most likely it also involved the wrong crowd as well (we will see that later). So what does David do?
1. Admit you sin - pro 28:13 ,1 John 1:9 , Isa 59:1-3 “Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear. For your hands are defiled with blood and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies; your tongue mutters wickedness.”
2. Ask God for His mercy- Heb 4:16, Eph 2:4-5, Lam 3:22-23 “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
3. Pray for healing - James 5:15 “And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.” 1 pet 4:19
II. Pray for deliverance - Vs 4-7 David knows that fact that no matter how much damage control he tries to do he will not be able to fix the problem. He can try to to a band-aid on it but the cut is there. It will bleed and fester until it contaminates everything and everyone around him. No matter how hard he tries he cannot fix the wounds. Wounds on others and wounds in himself. If you are a Christian then you know the rift in your soul when you sin against God you soul will not be at peace. That is a mark of a Christian, if you are ok with sin then you need to check yourself.
1. Acknowledge God as your only deliverer - ps 34:17, 2 pet 2:9, Joel 2:25-27 “I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent among you. “You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame. You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the Lord your God and there is none else. And my people shall never again be put to shame.”
2. Acknowledge God’s love for you - Rom 5:8, Isa 41:10, 1 John 4:16, Jeremiah 31:3 “the Lord appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.”
3. Remind Him (really a reminder to yourself) Isa 62:6 “On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen; all the day and all the night they shall never be silent. You who put the Lord in remembrance, take no rest,”
God of course does not need our reminding, but we do
III. Change the things we need to change - vs 8-10 Repentance is not just changing our minds ( what do I mean, when we sin we want to, we feel like it and we don’t care the consequences, But there comes a time when that foreboding takes over) There not only needs to be a change of heart but a change of behavior. We come to the agreement that what we did was wrong, unholy and sinful, we accept the consequences of what we did, and then we change the things that got us into trouble. Remember we as Christians desire to be more like Christ...
We need to Change the company we keep - Here we see David kicking people out of his life changing his association from the friends he had to his one true friend God. Pro 13:20, Ps 1, 2 Cor 6:14 “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?” 1Cor 15:33 “Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.””
He knows by faith - His confidence is secure He is loved and he knows it, and knows his God is a loving father, who is willing to forgive. Heb 11:1 “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”
The we walk by faith - In righteousness 2 cor 5:7 Eph 6:16 “In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;” Gal 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” 1 Pet 1:7 “so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
Application
Romans 4:16 “That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,”
Heb 10:22 “let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.”
Col 1:23 “if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.”
