Genesis 2:1–3 (NKJV)
1 Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished.
2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.
3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
What does it mean God rested.
We need to properly understand what it is meant by rest in the above passage.
It is not to mean that God was tired after working 6 days in creating the world that he needed rest and therefore he rested on the day 7
Go does not need rest like we do, that is. He never tires nor is weary.
Isaiah 40:28 “28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable.”
Rest in this verse means that simply God ceases from his works.
“were finished” signifies that the works were finished. So God rested on the seventh day means God ceased from his works.
Hebrews 4:9–10 (NKJV)
9 There remains therefore a rest for the people of God.
10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.
God resting on the seventh day, is God ceasing from his work, not because he was tired but because it was finished.
The fourth Commandment
Exodus 20:8–11 NKJV
8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
Why as believer do we not keep the sabbath day, which would be saturday and rest from our work.
The sabbath is a shadow of Christ.
Specifically, It is the shadow of the rest that we have in Christ Jesus.
Colossians 2:16–17 (NKJV)
16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths,
17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.
Ths substance of the sabbath is Christ, and the sabatth is forshadowing things to come in Christ.
In Christ, we find rest for our soul
We rest from the works of the law for rigtheousness
Matthew 11:28–30 (NKJV)
28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.
“who labor and are heavy laden” he is not speaking od physical labour or physical burden.
He is talking about the youke and burden of the rigtheouse requirements of the Law. Those weighed down and are labouring for salvation through the works of the law.
Acts 15:8–11 (NKJV)
8 So God, who knows the heart, acknowledged them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us,
9 and made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.
10 Now therefore, why do you test God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?
11 But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved in the same manner as they.
Romans 10:4 (NKJV)
4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
Colossians 2:14 (NKJV)
14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements (of the law)that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
Jesus said in John 19:30 that “it is finished” he finished the works of salvation for us, by taking the burden of the law upon himslef, so we can find our rest in him,
We rest from our physical labours in Christ
Revelation 14:13 (NKJV)
13 Then I heard a voice from heaven saying to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’ ” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them.”
those wo die in the lord, will enter into the rest og God and rest from all their labours.
Genesis 2:4–7 (NKJV)
4 This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,
5 before any plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. For the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground;
6 but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground.
7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
The man is reffering to the body which was formed from the dust of the ground and then, into this man God breath into him the breath of life.
A human Being, or living Soul (us) are composed of two things, the inner man or the spirit (breath of life) that came from God and the outer man which was formed from the dust.
In the New Testament, the outer man is replaced by christ in baptism and the innerman is renewed or regenerated by the infilling of the Holy Ghost.
Genesis 2:8–15 (NKJV)
8 The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed.
9 And out of the ground the Lord God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10 Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four riverheads.
11 The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one which skirts the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.
12 And the gold of that land is good. Bdellium and the onyx stone are there.
13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one which goes around the whole land of Cush.
14 The name of the third river is Hiddekel; it is the one which goes toward the east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.
15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.
God did not put him in the garden, to just sit there idly eating the banana and singing cumbaya.
He is eating the fruits because he is tending and keeping it. He is not idle.
The land was not curse, so he did not have to work as hard and the harverst was plenty.
Man was not created to be idle.
In fact idleness is something that brings a sin.
Ezekiel 16:49–50 (NKJV)
49 Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: She and her daughter had pride, fullness of food, and abundance of idleness; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.
50 And they were haughty and committed abomination before Me; therefore I took them away as I saw fit.
We were never created to be idle, We were created to work. We must work in some form or another.
Note: if you have the ability to work:
Note: those who are taking care of the house and looking after the kids that is work.
Genesis 2:16–17 NKJV
16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
God give coomand to Adam and Eve
Genesis 2:18–20 (NKJV)
18 And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.”
19 Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name.
20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.
God judges that man shoul not be alone
He bring to man the animals that he had created.
This is not another creation. this verse is just a zoomed in account of day six creation.
God wanted to see what he would call them. You can see how God is so interested even in the small activity of Adam in naming the animals. He is a God who is interested and wants to be involved in the most minute details of our personal lives.
Genesis 2:21–25 (NKJV)
21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place.
22 Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.
We see here a shadow of Christ and the Church
Adam is a type of Christ, the woman is a type of the Church
The way the woman was brought forth is a shadow of the way the church is created or formed in Christ Jesus
John 19:33–35 (NKJV)
33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.
34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.
35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe.
1 John 5:5–6 (NKJV)
5 Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
6 This is He who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth.
Adam gave his rib to form the woman
Jesus gave water and blood for the church to be form
it is through his name in water baptism that we put on Christ and his blood is released to wash away our sins. Hense we become his bride.
Genesis 2:23–25 (NKJV)
23 And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.”
24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
She is called woman because she is came from the man and is of the same nature as the man.
Ephesians 5:25–32 (NKJV)
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,
26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,
27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church ( like he presented Adam with the woman), not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.
28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.
29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church.
30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones.
31For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.
32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
Just like God presented the woman to Adam after he formed her. He is going to present to himslef the Church after he finished working on her.
Right know God is working on the Church but there is a day where he will present the Church To Himslef without spot, wrincle or any such thing.
God formed the church, for the same reason he formed the woman for man.
God did not want to be alone in existence throughout eternity.
He wanted a bride that is of his own nature, that he can have fellowship and communion with throughout eternity. He wanted a bride with whom he can co - rule and have dominion over all things he has created.
Just like God gave dominion to eve and Adam over all of creation, we will have dominion and rule with Jesus over creation.
This is indeed a great mystery
