Philemon's gospel-transformation has led to the hearts of the saints being refreshed

Philemon 4-5 - Philemon’s Character

Philemon 4–5 (ESV)
4 I thank my God always when I remember you in my prayers, 5 because I hear of your love and of the faith that you have toward the Lord Jesus and for all the saints,
Colossians 1:1–14 (ESV)
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,
2 To the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father.
3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, 5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, 6 which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth, 7 just as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf 8 and has made known to us your love in the Spirit.
9 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. 13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

I thank my God always when I remember you in my prayers,

I thank my God always

Thank

② to express appreciation for benefits or blessings, give thanks, express thanks, render/return thanks

Always

1. always — at all times; all the time and on every occasion.

When I remember you in my prayers

Remember

1. mention (memory) — a remark concerning someone called into recollection; especially a statement made to God in prayer.

13. to do for oneself — to perform an action or course of action; especially as for one’s own benefit.

Prayers

Because I hear of your love and of the faith that you have toward the Lord Jesus and for all the saints,

Chiastic structure

Love… for all the saints
Faith… toward the Lord Jesus

Because I hear of your love and of the faith that you have

I hear

③ to receive news or information about someth., learn about someth.

Your love

① the quality of warm regard for and interest in another, esteem, affection, regard, love

Galatians 5:22–23 ESV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
John 13:31–35 ESV
31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. 33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
1 John 3:11–15 ESV
11 For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. 12 We should not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother’s righteous. 13 Do not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. 15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
1 Thessalonians 4:9–12 ESV
9 Now concerning brotherly love you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another, 10 for that indeed is what you are doing to all the brothers throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers, to do this more and more, 11 and to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, 12 so that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one.
Faith

1. trust (faith) — strong confidence in, and reliance upon, someone or something; often with the object of trust understood.

You have

The present tense of echō (you have) demonstrates the continuous nature of Philemon’s concern for the Lord. His unwavering faith gave Paul confidence in his willingness to forgive.

Toward the Lord Jesus and for all the saints

Lord Jesus
All the saints

2. holy one (person) — a person who is morally pure; though possibly not to the exclusion of ritual purity.

Philemon 6 - Paul’s Prayer

Philemon 6 ESV
6 and I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective for the full knowledge of every good thing that is in us for the sake of Christ.

And I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective

Sharing

1. participation fellowship — the act of sharing in the activities or privileges of an intimate association or group; especially used of marriage and churches.

Koinōnia (fellowship) is difficult to render precisely in English. It is usually translated “fellowship,” but it means much more than merely enjoying each other’s company. It refers to a mutual sharing of all life, and could be translated “belonging.”

■ 6* The thanksgiving leads directly into the petition:18 that the κοινωνία “of the faith” of Philemon might also be effective in the future. The Greek word κοινωνία, therefore, does not mean fellowship here, but participation. Philemon shares in the common faith.20

Acts 4:32–37 ESV
32 Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. 33 And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. 34 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold 35 and laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. 36 Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, 37 sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
Faith

2. trust in the gospel — trust in Jesus as contained in the content of the Gospel.

Effective

1. effective — producing or capable of producing an intended result.

For the full knowledge of every good thing that is in us

For the full knowledge

1. personal recognition — coming to understand something clearly and distinctly or as true and valid; often with a personal acquaintance that necessitates a positive or negative reaction.

Of every good thing

1. good (moral concept) — moral excellence or admirableness.

That is in us

For the sake of Christ.

1 Corinthians 10:31 (ESV)
31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Philemon 7 - Saints Refreshed

Philemon 7 (ESV)
7 For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you.

① to cause someone to gain relief from toil, trans. (mid.: ApcEsdr 1:12 p. 25, 5) cause to rest, give (someone) rest, refresh, revive

3. to be given rest — to be caused to take a break from activities in order to be refreshed.

Theology in Action

Refresh the hearts of the saints

1 Corinthians 16:15–18 ESV
15 Now I urge you, brothers—you know that the household of Stephanas were the first converts in Achaia, and that they have devoted themselves to the service of the saints— 16 be subject to such as these, and to every fellow worker and laborer. 17 I rejoice at the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus, because they have made up for your absence, 18 for they refreshed my spirit as well as yours. Give recognition to such people.
2 Corinthians 7:10–16 ESV
10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. 11 For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter. 12 So although I wrote to you, it was not for the sake of the one who did the wrong, nor for the sake of the one who suffered the wrong, but in order that your earnestness for us might be revealed to you in the sight of God. 13 Therefore we are comforted. And besides our own comfort, we rejoiced still more at the joy of Titus, because his spirit has been refreshed by you all. 14 For whatever boasts I made to him about you, I was not put to shame. But just as everything we said to you was true, so also our boasting before Titus has proved true. 15 And his affection for you is even greater, as he remembers the obedience of you all, how you received him with fear and trembling. 16 I rejoice, because I have complete confidence in you.
