Date: The 60’s
Origin of Letter: Based on 5:13, it appears that Peter was in Rome.
Recipients:
· The recipients were most likely Gentile believers.
Purpose: To encourage the believers to stand firm and endure suffering and hardship.
Chapter 1
Verse 1
1. Peter’s role
· The term “apostle” can be used two ways. It can simply mean “messenger.” It can also refer to the office of “Apostle.” What is interesting is that the term “Apostle” as applied to Peter, is the only church office that states: “Of Jesus Christ.”
o The office of Apostle:
§ Had certain requirements
§ Had greater authority than other church offices
§ Is no longer in existence
2. Elect Exiles
· Elect – this means that we are chosen by God. This election is based on the foreknowledge of God.
· Exiles – I do not like this choice of word. The term “exile” carries the idea that one has been expelled or has had to flee from some place. I think a better translation would be pilgrim or sojourner. The emphasis is on:
o Travel
o Away from home
3. The Work of the Triune God is Salvation
· The Father wills
· The Son accomplishes
· The Spirit applies and sanctifies
4. Important Words for the Believer
· Obedience
· Grace and Peace
