Jesus preaches during a special event

John 7:1-20

John 7:1–20 NASB95
1 After these things Jesus was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill Him. 2 Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was near. 3 Therefore His brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples also may see Your works which You are doing. 4 “For no one does anything in secret when he himself seeks to be known publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” 5 For not even His brothers were believing in Him. 6 So Jesus said to them, “My time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune. 7 “The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil. 8 “Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because My time has not yet fully come.” 9 Having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee. 10 But when His brothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as if, in secret. 11 So the Jews were seeking Him at the feast and were saying, “Where is He?” 12 There was much grumbling among the crowds concerning Him; some were saying, “He is a good man”; others were saying, “No, on the contrary, He leads the people astray.” 13 Yet no one was speaking openly of Him for fear of the Jews. 14 But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and began to teach. 15 The Jews then were astonished, saying, “How has this man become learned, having never been educated?” 16 So Jesus answered them and said, “My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me. 17 “If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself. 18 “He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him. 19 “Did not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why do you seek to kill Me?” 20 The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who seeks to kill You?”

v.1-2

John 7:1–2 NASB95
1 After these things Jesus was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill Him. 2 Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was near.
Jesus avoids traveling in Judea because the Jews wanted to kill Him.
The Feast of Booths
celebrated in September or October
right before the Feast of Dedication
this happened because people in those times lived in leafy shelters to remember God’s faithfulness while Israel was in the wilderness
thanksgiving for the harvest
later is was seen as a eschatological (end times, judgement) hope
Deuteronomy 16:13
13 “You shall celebrate the Feast of Booths seven days after you have gathered in from your threshing floor and your wine vat;

v.3-5

John 7:3–5 NASB95
3 Therefore His brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples also may see Your works which You are doing. 4 “For no one does anything in secret when he himself seeks to be known publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” 5 For not even His brothers were believing in Him.
Jesus’ brothers asked Him to go to the place that Jesus was refusing to travel.
They wanted Him to go and put on a show
marketing
This is in a way the same taunting that the devil did when tempting Jesus (Matt 4:3)
The brothers wanted a show.
Jesus brothers didn't even believe that He was who He was. The Son of God.
They ate, slept, and lived with the Son of God and didnt even know it
but they would later believe (Acts 1:14)

Jesus response

v.6-9

John 7:6–9 NASB95
6 So Jesus said to them, “My time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune. 7 “The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil. 8 “Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because My time has not yet fully come.” 9 Having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee.
Jesus express (to his brothers) that His time has not come yet.
We understand that Jesus has His perfect plan.
Jesus tells His brothers to go, but he wont because. His time has not come yet.
He said the same thing to His mother at the wedding.
His time to die, to do this great act of sacrifice for the redemption of all man has not come yet.
The world does not hate his brothers, Be hates Him because He says that the world is evil.
Jesus was NOT a “Feel good” Preacher.
Jesus knew that people wanted to kill Him, but he was not going to make a public spectral
With that said, Jesus stayed were he was
he did not go with them public

V. 10-11

John 7:10–11 NASB95
10 But when His brothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as if, in secret. 11 So the Jews were seeking Him at the feast and were saying, “Where is He?”
As Jesus send His brothers off to go, Jesus remains
But we see that Jesus does go, and He goes in secret.
But Jesus goes, but with caution
So the Jews were expecting Jesus to be there (maybe some for the show/some for attempting to kill)
v.12-13
John 7:12–13 NASB95
12 There was much grumbling among the crowds concerning Him; some were saying, “He is a good man”; others were saying, “No, on the contrary, He leads the people astray.” 13 Yet no one was speaking openly of Him for fear of the Jews.
we see here social influence ( good man, lead astray)
How can God lead people astray from Himself?
Jesus was not part of the elite Jewish oder, because of this they accuse Him of leading people astray.
But as the people talked about Him is was not made public, because the Jews wanted Him dead.
When we go against the grain (story) cut brisket

v.15

John 7:15 NASB95
15 The Jews then were astonished, saying, “How has this man become learned, having never been educated?”

To be educated.

Jesus was not taught.
Jesus was not educated.
All the high Jewish elite were educated and this man was far more knowledgeable and has more wisdom then them.
We don't have to be educated in order to teach the gospel. To go out to the streets and share Jesus does not require for you to have a degree,
In this, the Jew challenged Jesus authority.

How does Jesus answers?

v.16-18

John 7:16–18 (NASB95)
John 7:16–18 NASB95
16 So Jesus answered them and said, “My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me. 17 “If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself. 18 “He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.
Jesus has 3 things that he talks about.....

#1 - talking of His authority (16)

Jesus says that the teaching / doctrine is not His, but its the Father.
‘saying that the doctrine of the Jews were from men.
Jesus us 100% God
He is saying here that His doctrine does not come from humanity, But From God.
This is teaching that has not been heard before. ( if Jesus was speaking the same as they were)
All sound biblical doctrine comes with authority and is from the Word of God

#2 - talking to the people (17)

hundreds of people are listening to Jesus speak. He is addressing everyone here “If anyone”
are you willing to do God’s will
Will you do the Will of God.
if you do. you will know ( the truth, doctrine, teaching
Psalm 25:14 NASB95
14 The secret of the Lord is for those who fear Him, And He will make them know His covenant.
God will make his truth known, when you are willing to be in His will.
Stay in Him

#3 - talking to the religious leaders (18)

These religious leaders, with there degrees, and top education, Challenge Jesus who hasn’t been to their school.
These religions leadership honorable, and feared in the city.
These guys were looking for their own praise and honor.
They are seeking their of glory
SEEK CHRIST. SEEK GOD, through his WORD.
when we do that we will be true

V.19-20

John 7:19–20 NASB95
19 “Did not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why do you seek to kill Me?” 20 The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who seeks to kill You?”
Jesus is saying here that these educated Jewish leaders took the law from Moses, and failed at even obeying that.
Jesus also in a way calls them out.
He tells them that if they follow the law of Moses
Exodus 20:13 NASB95
13 “You shall not murder.
Why are they seeking to kill Him?
Jesus caught them in thee own hypocrisy
John 7:20 NASB95
20 The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who seeks to kill You?”
For them to feel better about themselves in how to deal with Jesus, they say to Him and He has a demon in him.
This is honorable,
Because Jesus went against the grain. He didn’t do things as they thought it should be done.
Because of this they say that He has a demon in Him. (saying that He is demon possess)
Do we see this? because something is different we are ready to rule it out?????????
