As we move into the final three messages in our series on deconstruction we are going to be hitting some things that are going to be close to home for many people. We are going to be challenging some of the things we have made into must haves.
We are going to be asking the question…what does it mean to be a church…what characteristics does a church have. We are going to take each of those things that we think must be there and find out if that’s accurate.
To that end we are going to start with the concept of Worship.
What is Worship?

Worship:
reverent honor and homage paid to God or a sacred personage, or to any object regarded as sacred.
formal or ceremonious rendering of such honor and homage
That’s the formal definition of worship, but what is worship in the context of our tradition?
If we look at Old Testament worship there are several Hebrew words used in conjunction with it.

We see all these words for worship and that’s great but what have we reduced our worship to what have we made the most important? More importantly what really matters?

For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth—as there are many “gods” and many “lords”—yet for us there is one God, the Father. All things are from him, and we exist for him. And there is one Lord, Jesus Christ. All things are through him, and we exist through him.
You say come on Pastor Aaron of course we worship God that’s what we do here we sing songs before you preach we worship God. But take into account all the different things that we have said so far about what worship is.

Then Noah built an altar to the Lord. He took some of every kind of clean animal and every kind of clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. When the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma, he said to himself, “I will never again curse the ground because of human beings, even though the inclination of the human heart is evil from youth onward. And I will never again strike down every living thing as I have done.
(drill down here. Talk about the importance of not giving something with little to no meaning)
In the beginning of what worship was there was not really a specific place as time when on there was a tabernacle and a temple there were feasts and festivals that took place at set times, but those things began to become more important than the objects for worship became more important than the object of worship. We find Jesus speaking to this.

“Sir,” the woman replied, “I see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.”
Jesus told her, “Believe me, woman, an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews. But an hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and in truth. Yes, the Father wants such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and in truth.”
This is where the problems start. The woman here was caught up in what worship was and where worship had to happen. (drill down a bit)

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.
Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and signs were being performed through the apostles. Now all the believers were together and held all things in common. They sold their possessions and property and distributed the proceeds to all, as any had need. Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple, and broke bread from house to house. They ate their food with joyful and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. Every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.
This gives us what matters.
Worship is not Singing but it can include singing
Worship is not Giving but it can include giving’
Worship is not Serving but it can include serving
True worship is an attitude of the heart in presenting every part of our lives to God.
Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship. Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
Worship should infect every part of our lives.
And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
This is what worship is and yet we in the church have boxed and packaged it as a few songs before some guy gets up to preach. We enjoy concerts of worship, it gives us the feels but worship is not just the feels we have it’s the honor, devotion and service we give.
