THE PERSONALITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT PT 1

A U.S. Lutheran bishop tells of visiting a parish church in California and finding a stirring red and orange banner on the wall. "Come Holy Spirit. Hallelujah!" it declared in words printed under a picture of a fire burning. The bishop was also interested in the sign directly underneath the banner, which said: "Fire extinguisher." So much for that parish’s commitment to spiritual renewal.
So that is a question for us – do we all the burning fire of the Holy Spirit to do His work in our life – or do we use a fire extinguisher on Him and put out the fire?
As we talk about the personality of Holy Spirit this week and next let us think about this question as prepare –
Let Us Pray!
The Personality of the Holy Spirit
John 16:7–14
Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
I. THE HOLY SPIRIT SAVESJohn 3:5 – Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So, it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
A. He convicts man of his need of a Savior.
1 Thessalonians 1:4-5 – For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5 because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake.
B. He convinces man of his need of a Savior.
2 Timothy 1:13-14 – Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 14 By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.
1 Thessalonians 5:23 – Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 4:21-22 – (Abraham) fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. That is why his faith was “counted to him as righteousness.”
1 Peter 1:1-3 – according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you. 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
C. He converts (changes) man. As man is in Christ, he is a new person. This is brought about by the Spirit.
Romans 12:1-2 – I appeal to you therefore, brothers,[a] by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.[b] 2 Do not be conformed to this world,[c] but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
2 Cor. 5:17 – Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
Ephesians 4:23-24 – and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
2 Timothy 1:12 – which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me
II. THE HOLY SPIRIT SANCTIFIESRomans 15:16 – to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
We do the confessing; He does the cleansing.
A. He sanctifies through the Scriptures (Ps. 119:9, 11).
Psalm 119:9-12 – How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. 10 With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! 11 I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. 12 Blessed are you, O Lord; teach me your statutes!
John 17:17 – Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
B. He sanctifies through surrender. As we surrender to Christ, His blood keeps cleansing us (1 John 1:7).
1 John 1:7-9 – But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 Corinthians 1:29-31 – so that no human being[a] might boast in the presence of God. 30 And because of him[b] you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, 31 so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
2 Thessalonians 2:12-14 – But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits[a] to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. 14 To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Galatians 5:16-18 – But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
C. He sanctifies through separation. As we cooperate with the Holy Spirit, we will live a clean life
2 Cor. 7:1 – Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.
1 Corinthians 6:10-11 – nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
It has been told to me the refining process of gold. 24K gold is the purest gold 99.9% gold with no traces of other metals or minerals. As you go down the scale 18K, 12K. the way a goldsmith removes the other metals and minerals is to heat up the gold to extreme temperatures. As it heats up – the impurities rise to the top, the goldsmith scrapes them off and continues to heat until nothing else comes up.
He sanctifies us through separation – He wants to separate the impurities from us – are we willing to remain in the fire long enough for those to be removes?
III. THE HOLY SPIRIT SEARCHES
1 Corinthians 2:10-13 – these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 11 For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. 13 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.
A. He searches man’s actions. He knows how we act.
Romans 8:26-27 – Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because[g] the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
B. He searches man’s ambitions. He knows our desires and plans.
ACTS 5:3 – But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spiritand to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land?
ACTS 15:8 – And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them, by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us,
Jeremiah 17:10 – I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”
John 14:17 – Even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
C. He searches man’s affections. He knows of our love.
Romans 9:1-3 – I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— 2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers,[a] my kinsmen according to the flesh.
D. He searches man’s attitudes. He knows our thoughts and feelings.
Allow Him to search you and cleanse you daily.
ACTS 15:27-28 – We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who themselves will tell you the same things by word of mouth. 28 For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay on you no greater burden than these requirements:
ACTS 28:24-26 – 24 And some were convinced by what he said, but others disbelieved. 25 And disagreeing among themselves, they departed after Paul had made one statement: “The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet: 26 “‘Go to this people, and say, “You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will indeed see but never perceive.”
Have you allowed to the Holy Spirit to change you – make you a new creation with new desires?
How does knowledge that the Holy Spirit knows our actions change the way you think or act?
How does knowledge that the Holy Spirit knows your ambitions change your plans?
How does knowledge that the Holy Spirit knows what you love and desire and think on change what you love, desire, and meditate on?
Are you willing to allow the Holy Spirit fire to burn within you are do you immediately go for the fire extinguisher?
Remember the gold – are you willing to allow the Holy Spirit to scape off the impurities, the sin that’s hanging on – or do you remove yourself from the heat?
How are you willing to allow the Holy Spirit to fill you with His Personality?
