Intro to series

There is a difference between reading the bible and studying the bible, what do you think the difference is? OK, I will add another question with this, do you think we should study the bible?
One is for information the other for transformation.
One is a book, one is God’s holy word, Complete, lacking nothing to transform us, to conform us, everything we need for life and godliness and to take us to glory.
One is for education, the other is for edification,
Sure you can read the bible (of which survey by Barna in Jan 2021 only 11% say they read daily) and less study the bible (3% of those surveyed claim to study the bible). So that is 97% of the people who responded do not study the bible.
Let me ask a question, have you ever planned a trip, but not planned the course? Not use a map or GPS and just headed out?
As we take our trip, our journey we will have lots of stops along the way (as it stands right now about 8, maybe more, we will see)
Anytime when it comes to the bible we should come
With an open heart
expect to gain knowledge, understanding and application
Come knowing it is B.I.B.L.E.
Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth
So, I ask as we take this journey, just like the Spiritual Giftedness table talk series
To participate
To make your own notes
Make a plan, put a plan into place to grow in the bible not just by reading, but in having some bible study reasons and tools that are applicable.
Why study the bible, lets look at scripture
Pro1:1-7 (Have someone look it up)
What reasons do you see in these verses?
To know (v.2) to receive (v.3) to give (v.4) to increase (v.5) to understand (v.6)
Drive home (v.7
Proverbs 1:7 NASB95
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction.
We don’t want to be fools do we?
Turn a page now to ( Pro2:2-9) and let’s look together at some basic instructions given and benefits from studying.
You see our part, what we are to do (vv.2-4)
You see the results if we do our part (vv.5-9)
(Transition) more reasons on why we should study the bible.

We are commanded

If we are going to look at Effective Bible Study and why we should study the bible, I think we need to turn to the bible for these things, are you with me?
Turn to (Deu11:18-21)
Can you see the imperative?
Imperative to do what?
Another command (2Tim2:15)
What is the command?
Now, turn to (Col3:16) from a command to an inference - to let the word dwell in you.
From Command to a purpose
Turn to (Rom15:14); what is the reason?
How about looking at (1Cor10:11-12); again what is the reason?
From command, to purpose, with power
Check out (Lk21-32-33)
See it’s origin (Ps119:89)
See it’s time (Isa40:8)
Of course there is the reminder of its profit (2tim3:16-17)
And its means, how we got it (2Pt1:21)
So, what is the take away from why study the bible tonight?
It is different
It is commanded
It is inspired and is profitable
It is transformative, and it is edifying.
