Major Premise: To follow Jesus and share his mission demands full commitment.
Service Notes
Next week in Orange Sunday
Following Sunday is Wellness Weekend
This Tuesday is the start of VBI concerning the doctrine of the church
Introduction
Ever since 5:1–11 Jesus has been gathering disciples.
In 6:13 he chose the Twelve from among a larger number. Luke 6:13 And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;
We often learn of people invited to join the group and never know if they do or not. Along the way this group of followers/learners/disciples had grown to 70.
When we looked at the Apostles in Luke 9 we saw the unique manner of their mission but I told you we would find another group sent out that would very much represent us - non-apostles.
Today we should end with a time of rejoicing!! We will find a song that helps us with that.

Look for the following as we read.

Luke Historical and Cultural Background

Key Themes of Luke 9:57–10:12

■ Personal security and even family duties must give way to the demands of discipleship.

■ Jesus demands total commitment—no looking back.

■ Jesus shares his mission with a much wider circle of disciples than the Twelve.

■ Their mission is urgent and may be dangerous.

■ They should expect hospitality, but must be prepared for rejection.

Luke 9:57–10:12 (KJV 1900)
57 And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
1 After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.
2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.
3 Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.
4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.
5 And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house.
6 And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.
7 And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.
8 And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you:
9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
10 But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say,
11 Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
12 But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.

Christ’s teaching on the proper place for our family in regards to prioritizing life.

We cannot make more of something than God made of it. If we elevate something above the place God has for it we will diminish its value.
This is true for family. My intention today on Orange Sunday was too make much of the role of the family in this world.

Shocking statements

Luke 9:59–62 (KJV 1900)
59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
Bury father was more than attending a funeral.
Fulfilling a responsibility inside
radical break with cultural norms
Do not look back even to say goodbye
The job demands full concentration.
To be concerned with family ties is to jeopardize one’s discipleship.
At this point I desire to water down or apologize for the manner in which Jesus speaks. I speak this to my shame. Jesus deserve our allegiance even when his demands on our life are not fashionable or against our culture.

Sent out for His names sake

We plan to put these words above the pictures in the back. for his name's sake they went forth 3 John 1:7

People throughout history have (and continue) to be ignorant of the true God. Even when they know His name they do not know Him for who He is.

Pharaoh questioned God Exodus 5:2 And Pharaoh said, Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the Lord, neither will I let Israel go.
Nebuchadnezzar questioned God Daniel 3:15 Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made; well: but if ye worship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands?
Questioned the existence or power of God is not just for the world leaders.
It is for the depressed teenager in Indonesia who realizes that Islam will not give him hope.
It is done by the father in Argentina who doesn’t know how to handle the pressures of life and knows he is as likely to find relief from the friend at the bar as he would at the confessional booth
The true God is questioned by the kids in the villages outside of Kathmandu who have been indoctrinated with the belief that their are gods for every area of life and they are beginning to realize these gods are not reliable

God wants to be known – not simply by name – God wants to be known globally as GOD

What is a Jesus? - Austin Till or “Yes, I know about Jesus the Mother of God.” Both are ignorant of the true God
Psalm 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
Ezekiel 38:23 Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the Lord.
God desired that the Egyptians would know Him Exodus 7:5 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I stretch forth mine hand upon Egypt, and bring out the children of Israel from among them.
God wanted to the children of the Israelites to know Him Exodus 16:12 I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak unto them, saying, At even ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I am the Lord your God.
From Lucy Becker in Argentina to the imam in Indonesia God wants to be known.

We see God act in accordance to wanting His name know all throughout the Bible

David killed Goliath so the world would know there is a God in Israel 1 Samuel 17:45-46 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. 46 This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
Abimelech, the Philistine king, conversing with Abraham. Genesis 21:22 And it came to pass at that time, that Abimelech and Phichol the chief captain of his host spake unto Abraham, saying, God is with thee in all that thou doest:
Pharoah, Egyptian King, recognizes God in Joseph’s life Genesis 41:38 And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?

God’s name represents His global reputation.

1. God revealed His agenda regarding His own name as it applied to His purpose with Pharoah’s life Exodus 9:16 And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, for to shew in thee my power; and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth.
2. Did it work? Did God accomplish His goal of global fame through the deliverance of His people from Egypt?
Words of Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law Exodus 18:1 When Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father in law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and that the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt
Rahab’s testimony Joshua 2:10-11 For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed. 11 And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the Lord your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.”
Daniel mentioned in his prayer that God had gotten Himself worldwide fame through the Exodus – 1500 years after the fact! And now, O Lord our God, that hast brought thy people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hast gotten thee renown, as at this day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly.
Are the darkest days on the field. When you are beyond frustrated with those you are working with remember that you are there for His great name! God has made wonderful promises to those who go out for His namesake.

Look at how this understanding shaped Moses life and ministry.

Numbers 14:11–20 (KJV 1900)
11 And the Lord said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?
12 I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.
13 And Moses said unto the Lord, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;)
14 And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou Lord art among this people, that thou Lord art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.
15 Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying,
16 Because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness.
17 And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,
18 The Lord is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.
19 Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.
20 And the Lord said, I have pardoned according to thy word:
God is zealous for His name.
Isaiah 48:9–11 (KJV 1900)
9 For my name’s sake will I defer mine anger, And for my praise will I refrain for thee, That I cut thee not off.
10 Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.
11 For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it: For how should my name be polluted? And I will not give my glory unto another.

This is why in the story the disciples dust off their feet

This act declares a separation between God and the rejecting city, exposing their accountability to him for their decision Luke 10:11 Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
What is not often appreciated is the unbreakable link Jesus places between himself and his messengers.
They are commissioned in such a way that they represent him.
One of the fears of sharing the message of Christ is personal rejection. It shows we bought into the false belief that it is our message wew are sharing.

When we go out for His namesake we return with joy

Luke 10:17 KJV 1900
17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.

Our joy is not found in the difference we make in this world but in knowing him.

Luke 10:20 KJV 1900
20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
They had more to rejoice in!
Jesus said he saw Satan falling. Luke 10:18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
The power to deliver from Satan’s power has started to work itself out in history and among humanity.
God penned our deepest joy in a different ink and another world, in a book that promises us life long after all our ministry in this life is a sweet, but faint memory.

How this is expressed in the New Testament

Matthew 6:9 KJV 1900
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Hallowed means made holy, consecrated.

Jesus unapologetically rebukes that would eclipses joy in Him

We saw it first in family
Then we even saw it in ministry to him
All things...

The Apostle Paul learned this truth

Philippians 3:7–8 (KJV 1900)
7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.
8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,

We should rejoice in that which Christ rejoices.

Luke 10:21 (KJV 1900)
21 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.
This verse is one of only two places in the Gospels where Jesus is said to rejoice.
Jesus rejoices in spirit and it is good in the sight of the father.
Salvation is not just for the elite. Spiritual perception does not depend on intellectual capacity or education
Salvation has come to all men who will believe with childlike faith.

Response to the mission report of the Seventy

not rejoicing in the healings which was great
not rejoicing in the fact the disciples lives now had purpose
rejoicing that the Gospel came upon those the world despises and rejects
Jesus intercedes with a note of praise to God. God’s sovereignty sends such blessings to “little children” rather than to the wise and learned.

Conclusion

Such an incredible privilege to be sent out on a mission from Jesus
Such a privilege to represent His love and compassion to this world
We should rejoice with him in his Father’s indiscriminate love to all mankind
King and prophets longed to experience what they are experiencing, but they did not get this special honor 1 Peter 1:10-12 Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: 11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. 12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
As we pray for more laborers for the harvest we rejoice that he allows us to go forth for His name sake!
