Translation
So, as they were traveling on the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you may go.”
So Jesus said to him, “Foxes have dens and the birds of the sky have places to live, but the son of man has nowhere to lay his head.”
Now, he said to another, “Follow me.”
But he said, “Lord, allow me to go first to bury my father.”
But he said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead.
But as for you, go and proclaim the Kingdom of God.”
Now another also said, “I will follow you, Lord.
But first, permit me to say goodbye to my household.”
Now, Jesus said to him, “No one who puts their hand on the plow and then looks at the things behind him is fit for the Kingdom of God.”
The Call of Christ
Protestants speak of “calling”
What is calling?
Particular vs Universal call
Everyone may not have a particular call, but the universal is what matters most
The universal call of Christ: “Follow me.”
What does that really mean?
Abandon Comfort
“I will follow”, but consider first that Jesus has “nowhere to lay his head”
No prosperity Gospel
The Call is not a promise of greater worldly riches
Does life get better following Jesus?
Yes and No!
Abandon Duties
Ancient burial rites
Even so, it is a duty for sons to bury the bones of their fathers
Central Questions:
Can we really wait to follow Jesus?
Does the call of duty or the call of Christ come first?
“Leave the dead to bury their own dead”
Abandon All
Comparison with Elijah/Elisha
Christ’s call greater and more urgent than Elisha’s
Jesus doesn’t tell him, “you can’t even say goodbye”, rather, “you must say goodbye”, but in a way the man hadn’t really understood
Follow Me
Ακολουθει μοι
“Follow me” is more than mere directional guide
Following Jesus is pure devotion.
Follow so closely nothing can get between you and Christ.
