The golden censer cast upon the earth, Revelation 8:3-5
Revelation 8:3–5
And another angle came and stoop over the alter, having a golden censer and much incense was given to him in order that he should give for the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar, the one before the throne.
And the smoke of the incense went up with the prayers of the saints out from a hand of the angel before the God.
And the angel, having taken the censer and filled it out from the fire from the altar and he cast [it] unto the earth and thunders and sounds and lightning came to be and an earthquake.

And the seven angels, the ones having the seven trumpets prepared themselves in order that they should sound.
And the first sounded and hail and fire came to be, mingled in blood, and it was cast unto the earth and the third of the earth was consumed and the third of the trees was consumed and all green grass was consumed.

The Second Trumpet – Burning Mountain Cast into the Sea, Revelation 8:8-9

And the second angel sounded and as a great mountain burning with fire, it was cast into the sea and the third of the sea became blood.
And the third of the creatures in the sea died, the ones having a soul, and the third of ships were destroyed.

The Third Trumpet - Wormwood, Revelation 8:10-11

And the third angel sounded, and a great star fell out from the heaven burning as lamp and it fell upon the third of the rivers and upon the springs of the waters.
And the name of the star was said, the Wormwood, and it came to be the third of the waters unto poisonous bitterness[1]and many of the humans died out from the waters, because they were bitter

The Fourth Trumpet – Third of the sun and moon and day are struck, Revelation 8:12

And the fourth angel sounded and the third of the sun, and the third of the moon, and the third of the stars was struck, in order that a third of them should be darkened and a third of the day not shine and likewise the night

And I discerned and heard one of an eagle while flying in [the] midst of heaven, saying with a great voice, “Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabitants upon the earth, out from the remaining sounds of the trumpets of the three angels about to sound.”

And the fifth angel sounded, and I discerned a fallen unto the earth star out from the heaven and it was given to him the key to the pit of the abyss.

The releasing of demons from the abyss, Revelation 9:2

And he opened the pit of the abyss and up came smoke out from the pit as smoke of a furnace burning. And the sun and the air were darkened out from the smoke from the pit.

Humans will seek death, but not find it, Revelation 9:6
Revelation 9:6
And in those days humans will seek death and they will not find it and they will strongly desire to die and death will flee from them.
καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις ζητήσουσιν οἱ ἄνθρωποι τὸν θάνατον καὶ οὐ μὴ εὑρήσουσιν αὐτόν, καὶ ἐπιθυμήσουσιν ἀποθανεῖν καὶ φεύγει ὁ θάνατος ἀπʼ αὐτῶν.
The first woe is done, two more to come, Revelation 9:12

Καὶ ὁ ἕκτος ἄγγελος ἐσάλπισεν· καὶ ἤκουσα φωνὴν μίαν ἐκ τῶν [τεσσάρων] κεράτων τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου τοῦ χρυσοῦ τοῦ ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ,
Releasing of the four angels bound in the Euphrates River, Revelation 9:14

saying to the sixth angel, the one having the trumpet, “Release the four bound angels upon the river of the great Euphrates.”

They have been prepared for this day, Revelation 9:15

καὶ ἐλύθησαν οἱ τέσσαρες ἄγγελοι οἱ ἡτοιμασμένοι εἰς τὴν ὥραν καὶ ἡμέραν καὶ μῆνα καὶ ἐνιαυτόν, ἵνα ἀποκτείνωσιν τὸ τρίτον τῶν ἀνθρώπων.
They will kill a third of humans on the earth, Revelation 9:15

καὶ ἐλύθησαν οἱ τέσσαρες ἄγγελοι οἱ ἡτοιμασμένοι εἰς τὴν ὥραν καὶ ἡμέραν καὶ μῆνα καὶ ἐνιαυτόν, ἵνα ἀποκτείνωσιν τὸ τρίτον τῶν ἀνθρώπων.
They will raise an army, Revelation 9:16
Revelation 9:16
And the number of the army of the horses, myriads of myriads: I heard the number of them.
καὶ ὁ ἀριθμὸς τῶν στρατευμάτων τοῦ ἱππικοῦ δισμυριάδες μυριάδων, ἤκουσα τὸν ἀριθμὸν αὐτῶν.
Although only the word for horse is used, by using it with army it indicates those on horseback or horsemen in the army. Exodus 14:9
So the Egyptians pursued them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen and his army, and overtook them camping by the sea beside Pi Hahiroth, before Baal Zephon.
There is a textual issue here that is solved by spelling. ἱππικοῦ which is in the critic’s text is not the normal spelling for horse or horsemen
Textual support is better for just myriads, not two myriads. δυο μυριαδων Some translate this as twenty thousand, but χίλιοι is the typical word used for thousand
They are high ranking fallen angels, Revelation 9:17
Revelation 9:17
And thus I perceived the horses in the vision and the ones sitting over them, having breastplates of fiery red and deep blue and yellow, and the heads of the horses were as heads of lions and out from their mouth came fire and smoke and brimstone. Revelation 9:17
Καὶ οὕτως εἶδον τοὺς ἵππους ἐν τῇ ὁράσει καὶ τοὺς καθημένους ἐπʼ αὐτῶν, ἔχοντας θώρακας πυρίνους καὶ ὑακινθίνους καὶ θειώδεις, καὶ αἱ κεφαλαὶ τῶν ἵππων ὡς κεφαλαὶ λεόντων, καὶ ἐκ τῶν στομάτων αὐτῶν ἐκπορεύεται πῦρ καὶ καπνὸς καὶ θεῖον.
Breastplates of fiery red and deep blue and yellow
Fiery Red - Only used once in the New Testament.
Typically, fire is associated with judgment.
Used to describe where Satan when he was ruling was allowed to walk, Ezekiel 28:14-16
“You were the anointed cherub who covers;
I established you;
You were on the holy mountain of God;
You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones.
You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created,
Till iniquity was found in you.
“By the abundance of your trading
You became filled with violence within,
And you sinned;
Therefore I cast you as a profane thing
Out of the mountain of God;
And I destroyed you, O covering cherub,
From the midst of the fiery stones.
Blue color is seen as something having value, Exodus 25:4
blue, purple, and scarlet thread, fine linen, and goats’ hair;
Typically a fabric died dark blue, but can refer to a stone, Revelation 21:20
the fifth sardonyx, the sixth sardius, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst.
ὁ πέμπτος σαρδόνυξ, ὁ ἕκτος σάρδιον, ὁ ἕβδομος χρυσόλιθος, ὁ ὄγδοος βήρυλλος, ὁ ἔνατος τοπάζιον, ὁ δέκατος χρυσόπρασος, ὁ ἑνδέκατος ὑάκινθος, ὁ δωδέκατος ἀμέθυστος,
The use of these colors indicates these are high ranking. They are arrayed in colors associated with value and worth.
Fire, smoke, and brimstone
These three kill a third of humans on earth
Smoke is used for a sign to the Jews, Acts 2:19
I will show wonders in heaven above
And signs in the earth beneath:
Blood and fire and vapor of smoke.
καὶ δώσω τέρατα ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ ἄνω
καὶ σημεῖα ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς κάτω,
αἷμα καὶ πῦρ καὶ ἀτμίδα καπνοῦ.
Brimstone is seen in the destruction of Sodom, Luke 17:29
but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all.
ᾗ δὲ ἡμέρᾳ ἐξῆλθεν Λὼτ ἀπὸ Σοδόμων, ἔβρεξεν πῦρ καὶ θεῖον ἀπʼ οὐρανοῦ καὶ ἀπώλεσεν πάντας.
Brimstone is in the lake of fire, Revelation 14:10; 19:20
Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.
καὶ ἐπιάσθη τὸ θηρίον καὶ μετʼ αὐτοῦ ὁ ψευδοπροφήτης ὁ ποιήσας τὰ σημεῖα ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ, ἐν οἷς ἐπλάνησεν τοὺς λαβόντας τὸ χάραγμα τοῦ θηρίου καὶ τοὺς προσκυνοῦντας τῇ εἰκόνι αὐτοῦ· ζῶντες ἐβλήθησαν οἱ δύο εἰς τὴν λίμνην τοῦ πυρὸς τῆς καιομένης ἐν θείῳ.
he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.
καὶ αὐτὸς πίεται ἐκ τοῦ οἴνου τοῦ θυμοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ κεκερασμένου ἀκράτου ἐν τῷ ποτηρίῳ τῆς ὀργῆς αὐτοῦ καὶ βασανισθήσεται ἐν πυρὶ καὶ θείῳ ἐνώπιον ἀγγέλων ἁγίων καὶ ἐνώπιον τοῦ ἀρνίου.
The Authority of the horse is given to them
Indicating strength
In their mouth and in their tail
Their tail is likened to a serpent having heads
They unrighteously harm with their tail, Revelation 6:6

And I heard as a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius and three quarts of barley for a denarius and the olive and the wine do not unrighteously harm
καὶ ἤκουσα ὡς φωνὴν ἐν μέσῳ τῶν τεσσάρων ζῴων λέγουσαν· χοῖνιξ σίτου δηναρίου καὶ τρεῖς χοίνικες κριθῶν δηναρίου, καὶ τὸ ἔλαιον καὶ τὸν οἶνον μὴ ἀδικήσῃς.
Comes from unrighteousness
The unrighteous harm to a fellow saint, 1 Corinthians 6:8
No, you yourselves do wrong and cheat, and you do these things to your brethren!
ἀλλʼ ὑμεῖς ἀδικεῖτε καὶ ἀποστερεῖτε, καὶ τοῦτο ἀδελφούς.
Moses’ issue with the Egyptian and fellow Jews, Acts 7:25-26
For he supposed that his brethren would have understood that God would deliver them by his hand, but they did not understand. And the next day he appeared to two of them as they were fighting, and tried to reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brethren; why do you wrong one another?’
ἐνόμιζεν δὲ συνιέναι τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς [αὐτοῦ] ὅτι ὁ θεὸς διὰ χειρὸς αὐτοῦ δίδωσιν σωτηρίαν αὐτοῖς· οἱ δὲ οὐ συνῆκαν. τῇ τε ἐπιούσῃ ἡμέρᾳ ὤφθη αὐτοῖς μαχομένοις καὶ συνήλλασσεν αὐτοὺς εἰς εἰρήνην εἰπών· ἄνδρες, ἀδελφοί ἐστε· ἱνατί ἀδικεῖτε ἀλλήλους;
The remaining humans did not repent, Revelation 9:20-21

And the remaining of the humans, the ones not having been killed by these strikes, did not change the mind out from the works of their hands in order that they should not worship the demons and golden idols and silver and brass and stone and wood, which neither have the inherent ability to see nor to hear, nor to walk. And they did not change the mind out from their senseless slaughters, nor out from their religious superstitious awes, nor out from their fornication, nor out from their thefts. Revelation 9:20–21

From the works of their hands
From their worship of demons and idols
From their senseless slaughters
From their religious superstitious awe
From their fornications
From their thefts
Judgment is not intended to bring repentance, Romans 2:4
Romans 2:4
Or do you think little of the riches of His kindness, and tolerance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the kindness from God leads you into a change of mind?
ἢ τοῦ πλούτου τῆς χρηστότητος αὐτοῦ καὶ τῆς ἀνοχῆς καὶ τῆς μακροθυμίας καταφρονεῖς, ἀγνοῶν ὅτι τὸ χρηστὸν τοῦ θεοῦ εἰς μετάνοιάν σε ἄγει;
