Foster for Families video / explanation
Vision Sunday - every Sunday as we desire to be obedient to God’s Word
Give out the handout
James 1:27 (KJV 1900)
27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
To visit means to “look after”
The stated goal of this presidential proclamation was so that churches around the United States would use the day to celebrate God's gift of life, commemorate the many lives lost to abortion, and commit themselves to protecting human life at every stage.

Reading

8 days after the list of hard sayings about denying self and following Jesus
We will learn about who the “some standing here” will be
It’s while they’re processing these things Jesus takes Peter, James and John up on a mountain to show them things that would give them hope. They needed this kind of encouragement and assurance, and He wanted to help their faith.
Luke 9:27–36 (KJV 1900)
27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.
28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.
30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:
31 Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease (DEATH) which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.
32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him. (GLORIOUS AWAKENING)
33 And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.
34 While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.
35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
36 And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.

Some of you will see the kingdom of God before you taste death.

Luke 9:27 (KJV 1900)
27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.

Who are the ones standing He is speaking of

Luke 9:28 (KJV 1900)
28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
two or three witnesses is repeated at least four times in the New Testament as a standard of testimony that is to be believed.

What will they see?

Mark and Matthew both describe the same event.  Mark adds that it's going to come with power and Matthew adds that the Son of Man is going to come.  So you're going to see the kingdom, its power, its glory and the coming of the Son of Man.
hey had...they had been hoping for the kingdom, hoping against hope now for the kingdom because Jesus said in verse 22 He's going to be taken by the scribes and the Pharisees and the chief priests and be killed.

Primary work was not to fee the 5000 but to suffer and die for all mankind.

Luke 9:21–22 (KJV 1900)
21 And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;
22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.
This is when Peter rebukes Him
Peter was committed to the glory but not the cross. He was committed to the exaltation but not the humiliation
Peter got Jesus worth correct, but not His work.

Connecting hard sayings to the significance of these events

Luke 9:28 (KJV 1900)
28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
They will see somethings that will confirm those sayings. Luke 9:36 And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.
Sights that confirm the sayings!

Reminder. What did he say?

Luke 9:23–26 (KJV 1900)
23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.
25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels.

Context of the Life-Changing Lesson

Time

Luke 9:27–28 (KJV 1900)
27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.
28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.

Some will see Jesus in His right relationship with His Kingdom

Matthew 16:28 (KJV 1900)
28 Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.
Nothing is said in the 8 days between the sayings and the sights

Why did Jesus go there? Pray

Luke 9:28 (KJV 1900)
28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
second of three prayer meetings they fall asleep
Luke 22:45 they fell asleep because of sorrow in the garden
Last sight is of Jesus praying
Luke 9:32 (KJV 1900)
32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.
Fall asleep in church song leading class.

Witnesses

With him at Jairus house. Will be with Him at the garden of Gethsemane.
2 or 3 witnesses Deut 19:15 One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be
Seems as if these 3 got to enjoy unusual opportunities to have time with the Lord.
James will be the first to die. John will live the longest. Peter will be called to be the leader of the scattered disciples.
John and Peter will write about this event.

What did they see?

Luke 9:29 (KJV 1900)
29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.
Mark 9:3 (KJV 1900)
3 And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them.
Matthew 17:2 (KJV 1900)
2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

Reminder Jesus is not just part of the story, He is the point of the story – Jesus is the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets

Luke 9:30 (KJV 1900)
30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:
People keep their identity.
These men represent the Law and Prophets.
These men serve in part as representatives of the plan and promises of God in the Old Testament.

Spake of Jesus death

Luke 9:31 (KJV 1900)
31 Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.
Moses and Elijah understood, even though the disciples did not.
Testifies of the revelation of the Old Testament
Moses knew the sacrifice system.
Elijah knew the promise of the Messiah

Correction of their way of thinking

Proposal and correction

Luke 9:33 (KJV 1900)
33 And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.
These men live in Heaven. Why would they need a booth.
Peter didn’t know what to say. v.32
Comedian speaking of bringing Lazarus being brought back to earth

Jesus is not on the same level as the other men.

Luke 9:35–36 (KJV 1900)
35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
36 And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.

Jesus is the beloved Son

After confessing that Jesus is the Messiah, Peter learns Jesus will suffer and die.
Peter is getting confirmation that Jesus is the Christ

Report from John and Peter

John 1:14 (KJV 1900)
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
2 Peter 1:16 (KJV 1900)
16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

Peter speaks of this toward the end of his life

2 Peter 1:16–21 (KJV 1900)
16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
Our faith is not grounded in reliable observations of historical reality, it is a "cunningly devised fables" and unworthy of acceptance.
17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
18 And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.
19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
Peter speaks of it as "more sure" now because it has been confirmed on the mount of transfiguration in an eyewitness preview of its fulfillment.
Thirty years after the event the revelation of the majesty of Christ fills the mind of Peter with awe, and he wants more than anything to share the hope of that vision with us before he dies.

Is it good for us to be here?

Luke 9:33 (KJV 1900)
33 And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.
Being in the presence of the glorified Christ in worship is a wonderful place to be.

Emphasis of the Word in worship

Luke 9:35 (KJV 1900)
35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
It is in the words of Scripture that worshipers see Christ.
We are conformed to the image of Christ, who is the exact representation of the invisible God Heb 1:3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;”

Renewing of our mind is being conformed to the image of God’s Son.

Romans 12:2 (KJV 1900)
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Colossians 3:10 (KJV 1900)
10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

More than you need anything he in the rhythm or routine of your life you need beholding the glory of God.

2 Corinthians 3:18 (KJV 1900)
18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

Beholding Glory, Becoming Whole

John 1:14 (KJV 1900)
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
John 1:17 (KJV 1900)
17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
So we must look and live.
We do not go to the Word as a self-help book. We go to learn about the grace and truth of our Rescuer.
God has lifted the veil so that believers can see the glory of GOD in the face of Christ 2COR 4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Look up at the sky.

Psalm 19:1–2 (KJV 1900)
1 The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament sheweth his handywork.
2 Day unto day uttereth speech, And night unto night sheweth knowledge.

Look down at the pages.

Psalm 19:7–8 (KJV 1900)
7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
8 The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.
David is telling us here that we see it in the sky, but mostly, we see it on the page.

See the glory of God in His Word by reading it to behold His glory!

The Bible is not a portrait; it’s a window.

Psalm 15:1–3 (KJV 1900)
1 Lord, Who shall abide in thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell in thy holy hill?
2 He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, And speaketh the truth in his heart.
3 He that backbiteth not with his tongue, Nor doeth evil to his neighbour, Nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour.

Option A: Okay! I can do this. I will walk with integrity and work righteousness. I will speak truth. Help me, Lord.

Option B: O Lord, who may abide in Your tent? Who may dwell on Your holy hill?” our first thought should be: Jesus. He is the only One who truly can. The One who walks with integrity and works righteousness, who speaks truth in his heart . . . who does not slander with His tongue. Jesus is so beautiful. He is so holy. I could never dwell on the holy hill of the Lord if Jesus had not walked up the hill of Calvary. O Lord, I praise you. Please make me more like you.

Do you see the difference between the former and the latter? The desire for change in the former is totally rooted in human resolve, where the desire for change in the latter is rooted in glory-beholding worship.

Beholding the glory of God changes everything

Contentment

Philippians 3:7–8 (KJV 1900)
7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.
8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,
Paul’s desires and preferences have been so transformed by the superior beauty and worth of Christ that nothing is more desirable to him than Christ.
Beholding the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus is the key to contentment.

Sin

Romans 3:23 (KJV 1900)
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
the essence of sin is preferring anything above the glory of God.
Sin is overcome by seeing the glory of the Lord as more desirable than the promise of sin.
What then would sanctification be? It is seeing the glory of the Lord as supremely valuable — more to be preferred, more to be desired than anything.

Peter, James, and John knew they would never be the same.

Luke 9:36 (KJV 1900)
36 And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.
One cannot look upon the glory of God and remain the same.
“People resemble what they revere, either for ruin or restoration. God has made all people to reflect, to be image bearers. People will always reflect something, whether it be God’s character or some feature of the world.” K Beele

Conclusion

Time to wake up and behold His glory.
I wvvvvould f to recommend to you that you find a solid hour this week and spend it beholding the glory of God.
