Introduction
2 Samuel and 2 Chronicles both give different stories as epithet of David’s life.
What kind of scene, or statement, would epitomize your life?
Buy the land for the temple. Wasn’t interested in a discount. It wasn’t about meeting a need but expressing love. 2 Sam 24:24 And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the Lord my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.
1 Chronicles 29 David says, “The one thing I wanted to do in my life that God would not allow me to was to build a Temple that would be a place where people could meet with God. God would not allow me to because I was a man of blood. My son is going to build that temple; but the one thing we can do is take up an offering to collect everything for him.
David gives a massive offering.
J. D. Greear Sermon Archive A Life Responding to the Gospel: 1 Chronicles 29:10–22

Well, as the leader, David starts off the offering by giving (vs. 4) 3000 talents of gold and 7000 talents of silver. A talent was about 75 lbs. That is 225,000 lbs of gold and 525,000 lbs of silver (like to see the usher carrying that offering bucket).

This is a huge amount.

● One talent was about 10 years’ wages for the average worker. Scholars say that in today’s terms David gave about 5 billion dollars.

● Scholars say this was probably David’s entire personal treasury. In other words, he didn’t give out of his treasuries. He gave his treasuries. This was a sacrificial gift that would have led to a significant lifestyle change.

David was part of a massive joyful offering.

1 Chronicles 29:17 (KJV 1900)
17 I know also, my God, that thou triest the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of mine heart (integrity) I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy thy people, which are present here, to offer willingly unto thee.

We would like to be part of an offering like this!

joyful people
present
offered willingly unto God
Note cards handed out and Pledge.

What were the conditions of the heart that led to this offering?

Immense gratitude to God.

1 Chronicles 29:14 (KJV 1900)
14 But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee.
Their are amounts of money that teenagers in this room could give that aren’t even an option for most of the world. - But who are we?
The option to serve on the mission field funded by the generous gifts of the abundance of churches in America is something most people in history would never have - but who are we?
The abundance of our years. How many years do you think the Lord gave you? 50-60 or 89. No we have been given eternal life. Why be selfish with the few on earth. - Who are we?
All we have comes from His hands.
1 Chronicles 29:16 (KJV 1900)
16 O Lord our God, all this store that we have prepared to build thee an house for thine holy name cometh of thine hand, and is all thine own.
Giving our lives is not so much about being generous but it is about not taking for ourselves which belongs to God.

Realization of the brevity of life and opportunities.

1 Chronicles 29:15 (KJV 1900)
15 For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.
Seeing things from an eternal perspective changes everything

Need words for this. Need a prayer.

Psalm 90 (KJV 1900)
A Prayer of Moses the man of God.
1 Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations.
2 Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.
3 Thou turnest man to destruction; And sayest, Return, ye children of men.
4 For a thousand years in thy sight Are but as yesterday when it is past, And as a watch in the night.
5 Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: In the morning they are like grass which groweth up.
6 In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; In the evening it is cut down, and withereth.
7 For we are consumed by thine anger, And by thy wrath are we troubled.
8 Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, Our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.
9 For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: We spend our years as a tale that is told.
10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; And if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, Yet is their strength labour and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
11 Who knoweth the power of thine anger? Even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath.
12 So teach us to number our days, That we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.
13 Return, O Lord, how long? And let it repent thee concerning thy servants.
14 O satisfy us early with thy mercy; That we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
15 Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, And the years wherein we have seen evil.
16 Let thy work appear unto thy servants, And thy glory unto their children.
17 And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: And establish thou the work of our hands upon us; Yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.

David knew what the work was for him.

1 Chronicles 29:1 (KJV 1900)
1 Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great: for the palace is not for man, but for the Lord God.

Do you know the work we have been given to do is just as clear?

Mark 16:15 KJV 1900
15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Matthew 28:18–19 KJV 1900
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Summary: Make disciples.
Epilate. Ronald makes disciples in every country I have seen them.

Where (all nations), why (express love), and what (make disciples) have been determined the only question for tonight is how?

What do you want to give him as an expression of love that will help make disciples of all nations?
